CHAPTER FOUR
Efficacious
⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was around two o'clock by the time Scott and I got home. Thank god mom works late night hospital shifts, otherwise both of us would be in deep trouble. It wouldn't get any more worse than when Scott had to tell mom he bit me. I thought she was going to cry, but she just nodded in agreement as if she understood. Except when I left the room, I could hear her giving Scott a lecture on how he could have killed me. The argument dragged on for at least an hour.
I was to tired to talk, but Scott seemed very revved up about what happened during the full moon, so I decided to get through the conversation now instead of later.
The two of us slumped down onto my bed, Scott sitting upward as I lay on my back, trying my best not to fall asleep.
"Scott, what the hell is happening to me? Werewolves can't do that." I said, blowing loose strands of hair out of my face.
Of course, I was referring to my strange outburst when I tried breaking my hand. Which by the way, had not healed yet.
"I know they can't. Which is why we need to figure how it was possible to... to do what ever the hell it's called." Scott replied as he grabbed one of my pillows beside me, holding it in his arms.
"You mean the whole Shockwave thing? Yeah, yeah..."
"Shockwave sounds kind of scientific, shouldn't you be using something more... different?"
I couldn't help the scoff that escaped my mouth, so I tried turning the sound into a cough. "Right, like what? I can't name something if it's not suppose to exist, Scott."
I waited a while, expecting him to answer with one of his inspiring sentences. Instead, he just sighed and taped on his thigh, his expression blank.
"Get some sleep." He mumbled, throwing my pillow he was hugging onto my face.
"Scott!" I called to him before he could disappear into the hallway. "You may think you're not the best Alpha but... you're definitely the best brother. And I think that counts as something."
A large smile spread across his face, one of which I felt the need to return. "Thank you."

⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thank god for weekends. The morning that followed the full moon, was a very long and boring one. I spent half the day sleeping and the other half watching re-runs of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I can only pray that vampires don't exist.
Scott hung around for a while, but he decided to investigate more about the so called 'Mute' with Stiles. I wanted to go too, but they both wanted me to have at least one weekend of normality.
Not that I'm complaining or anything. Sitting in my room all day eating pancakes is fine by me.
Now, here I am on a Sunday morning, thinking whether or not I should do the exact same thing as yesterday. Half of me agrees to it, but the other half wants to go outside to a park and get some fresh air. Maybe I should ask mom to go? I haven't spent any quality time with her in a while, so I think it should be good.
I hesitantly stumbled out of my bed, the cold hitting me instantly. Grabbing the blanket I had been curled up in, I slung it around my back like a cape and began my decent downstairs to the kitchen where I knew mom would be.
"Hey sweetie." She said as I stepped into the kitchen.
She sat on one of the breakfast bar stools, sorting through various papers which I assumed were part of her work.
"Hi, mommy." I muttered, hugging her tightly from behind. Okay, I admit it. I still call her mommy. I mean, seriously I'm not ready to grow up.
"Finally decided to give up on the whole vampire genre, did you?" She said sarcastically, giving me a smile as I sat on the stool beside her.
I nodded my head, rolling my eyes and smiling back. "Yeah. I was actually wondering if you were doing anything today."
She sighed, shuffling the papers around on the counter. "Actually, I have overtime work needed done. The hospital still wants an answer as to why Liam had disappeared from his room the other night."
A confusing amount of emotions became known to me. I felt sad that she was busy, but also felt nervous at the mention of Liam's name.
"How is he anyway?" Mom asked, her elbow nudging my arm.
"What, what who? Liam? I-I don't know. Well I mean I do know. He's fine, yeah." I stammered, feeling stupid at how flustered I seemed.
Mom grinned at me, her hand reaching towards her mug to take a sip of her usual coffee.
"Maybe you should call him. If you can't hang out with your wonderful mother, you could always hang out with your boyfriend."
I felt my mouth drop open and my eyes widen. I laughed it off, hiding my head in my arms to hide the unmistakable blush on my cheeks. "He is not my boyfriend." I defended with a laugh.
Mom only nodded in reply, her eyebrows shifting as her emotion displayed sarcasm. "I know." She said before standing up. She walked to the other side of the counter, and dropped her mug into the sink. "You should still call him."
"Maybe I will." I challenged, grabbing my phone from my shorts. I probably looked like a mutated burrito with the blanket still around me. I brung the phone into eyesight, and swiped across the screen until my eyes found contacts. I scrolled through my many contacts (by many I mean ten) and felt stupid when I realised Liam's name was not one of them.
I never asked for his number.
"Well there goes that idea." I sighed, setting the phone on the counter for mom to see.
She bent down, and tapped on the table when she noticed it too. "Well lucky for you..." She stopped mid sentence, and slid one of the papers she was looking at toward me.
My gaze fell upon it, my skin warming at the sight. At the top written in bold letters was:
DUNBAR, LIAM
"I guess Liam disappearing has a good side to it after all." Mom joked, sending me a smile. "Be home before five at the least. And if you somehow see Scott wandering around, please tell him to go home." She laughed before leaving the kitchen.
I have no idea why she said be home before five, since she's usually my ride home.
Holding the paper in both my hands, I scanned my eyes down the page in search of a phone number. My eyes fell upon an address, and I stalkishly memorised it before beginning the search of a phone number again. There were several different numbers. One belonging to his parents, one being the home number, and one belonging to Liam.
I grabbed the phone off of the counter once more, and copied the number.
Call him, or not call him? The worst that could happen is if it's not his number at all. Before I had any idea of what I was doing, I had instinctively dialled the number. Oh god this is strangely terrifying.
"Hello?" A voice sounded from the other end of the phone. It was definitely Liam, I knew that much. His voice sounded somewhat high pitched but I think that's natural when it comes to phone calls.
"Hi." I answered as I shuffled in my seat nervously.
Suddenly, I realised I was in the exact same position I had been in when I broke my locker to get Liam's attention. I didn't know what to say, or what to do.
"Jess? What, how did you get my number? Did Mason give it to you?" Liam's words spilled out faster than I could take them in.
I lightly laughed, unwrapping myself from the blanket to stand up. "N-no."
"Stop, god just-" Liam mumbled, his voice sounding distant. I assumed he was talking to someone else, because I could hear a faint voice in the background. "Okay, never mind about how you got it. Why did you call anyway?" He questioned, his voice in focus again.
I was at a loss for words. What did I want again?
"Oh! Oh, uh... I-I was just wondering if you were... I mean if you wanted to hang out? If you're not busy."
"I'm uh, I'm actually with Mason right now so I-" Liam's voice broke away. Instead the sound of a thump rung through the phone, until another voice started talking; this time sounding like Mason.
"Liam and I would definitely like to hang out with you. We're at the school lacrosse field, and... hey, Liam stop! Jess, just come to the lacrosse field. Okay? Cool, see you then!"
Mason's voice was cut off by the sound of the dial tone.
They hung up on me?

⠀⠀⠀⠀
I don't know why I bothered coming. The whole phone call just seemed a little off with Liam. I got this strange feeling that he didn't want to see me. But in all honesty, I was willing to take a little risk just so I can see him and ask if he's okay.
Getting to school was the annoying part. It was a strange feeling to be taking the public bus, instead of the school bus here for once. I can't wait until I get my very own car. Oh how I want to be a sophomore!
I took my time in making my way to the field. The last time I had been on it, was when Liam broke his leg. I didn't want anything like that to happen again.
Once the field was in view, I couldn't see anyone. The bleachers were clear, and the whole field was empty, apart from a few lacrosse sticks in the middle. What the hell?
Worry got to me as I wondered whether or not they had already left. Did I really come out here for no reason?
"McCall!" Someone yelled causing me to be startled. I swivelled around to see Mason sitting on the top row of the bleachers; waving at me. Had he always been there?
I practically ran over, reaching him in no time without feeling breathless. Werewolf abilities at it's finest.
"Liam went to his locker, said he had something important in there." Mason noted as he swivelled a random lacrosse stick around in his hands. Right, like he actually plays lacrosse.
"Locker? How would he get to it in the first place, the whole school is on lockdown during weekends."
"Well, not anymore." Another voice from behind me said, startling me again. Please stop doing that.
Liam stood behind me, his hands holding on to a medium sized box. He sat down beside Mason, giving me a smile as he walked past me.
"Liam here said he had his own way of breaking in. What ever that means." Mason laughed, wearing a smug look upon his face.
Looking at Liam, I could see him tapping the empty space beside him for me to sit down; his hand revealing claws that I desperately needed to hide.
"So!" I exclaimed, grabbing Liam's hand as I slumped down beside him before Mason could see the claws. "Why are you guys here?"
I now understood what Mason meant by 'Liam had his own way of breaking in'. I guess Liam knows something about being a werewolf after all.
"Mason's helping me practise for the scrimmage tomorrow. He's pretty terrible at it though." Liam answered, both boys grinning at me.
"Why are you looking at me?" I asked, shooting them a suspicious look.
Mason spoke up, keeping eye contact with me the whole time. "Well when you called Liam, I thought it was the perfect time for you guys to..." Mason didn't finish his sentence. Liam had interrupted him by sending his elbow straight into Mason's stomach.
"He just thought it was the perfect time to get someone more experienced to help me practise." Liam continued for Mason, an excuse of which I found hard to believe.
"Experience? I don't play lacrosse, Liam."
"But your brother does. You'd have to know everything about it." Liam turned to face me more, our hands finally disconnecting.
I shook my head in response, Mason nodding his.
"You're doing it." Mason said, before he and Liam pulled me off my feet and started pushing me carefully down the stairs.
I guess I don't have much of a choice now.
Mason positioned himself in the goal, looking like a robot with the goalies gear on. Where the hell did these two get all of this stuff anyway? And more importantly, what was in the box?
Liam and I were further away from Mason, in the exact same spot the lacrosse team had lined up on the other day, before Liam snapped his leg.
"You're going to try and get the ball into the net. Or hit Mason. Either way, it will be amazing." Liam joked, handing me one of the spare sticks I had seen out in the middle of the field earlier.
I eyed out the distance between where Liam and I were standing compared to where Mason was. It wasn't the normal spot the lacrosse team practised getting a goal from.
"Don't you think we're a little far away? Most people would find it impossible to get a goal in from here." I explained as I let Liam position me so I'd score the ball in correctly.
"Well, apparently most people aren't werewolves." He muttered, stepping away from me with his hands resting on his waist, looking proud at his accomplishment of making me stand here.
"Please don't hurt me!" Mason yelled from the net, dancing around to prepare himself.
Liam and I both laughed before shooting each other a smile.
Okay, Jess. Just get the ball in the net. Heaps of people can do it, and so can you...
I stepped forward and swung my body around to bring the stick in front of me. The ball flung from the stick with great force, and I truly believed it was going to hit Mason in the face. The ball whizzed past him, landing in the net successfully.
Liam clapped from beside me, as a stumbling Mason tried to regain his balance.
"You okay?" I called out to him, receiving a nod and a thumbs up from him.
"Your turn, werewolf boy." I sassed, playfully shoving the lacrosse stick into his chest to take up the spot he had been standing in.
Liam readied himself instantly, waiting for Mason to get himself together. Liam took a step forward, his whole body shifting his weight as he brought his arm through.
Then I saw it.
His eyes glowed their werewolf yellow, as the ball flew through the air, faster than anything I thought possible. Luckily, Mason quickly dodged it just in time, before the ball smashed through the net. Usually, the net would capture the ball, but instead, the ball had gone straight through it; ripping the rope that laced it together.
Liam and I both rushed toward Mason, who looked about ready to faint.
"What the hell!" He yelled, throwing the helmet he wore onto the ground.
"God, are you okay?" Liam asked, checking Mason for any injuries that were definitely not there, thanks to the padding.
"No!" Mason exclaimed, sitting up to face the net. "My best friend, who is apparently Superman, almost killed me with a ball."
The three of us stared at the hole Liam had made, the edge of the rope charred and burning. Oh this is not good. Mason can't see this.
"I'm done." Mason mumbled with a sarcastic laugh as he stood up from the ground and started walking towards the bleachers. I guess I didn't have to do anything about getting him away from the goal after all.
"I'm going again." Liam whispered, picking up his stick he dropped when he was helping Mason.
"What? No way are you going to do that." I said, pulling Liam by the shoulder to face me.
"Why not? Imagine if I could use that in a game. There's no chance of the other team winning."
"Yeah, and there's no chance of them living either. What ever you just did, is dangerous and you can't do it. You shouldn't be using werewolf abilities on the field because someone will notice or get hurt." I reasoned, slipping the lacrosse stick out of his hand.
His face fell, but he nodded in agreement. "Yeah. Yeah, sorry."

The three of us stayed at the lacrosse field for another three hours, until Mason said he had to go somewhere. Where ever that somewhere was, is a mystery.
"Aren't you scared about... any of this?" Liam asked as we walked toward the parking lot, where our parents were both picking each of us up. Liam had a bag slung around his arm, which caused me to wonder what the hell was in the box he got from his locker.
"Scared? More like terrified." I mumbled, the two of us stepping in sync.
"And your brother? He's just always been a... werewolf?"
"Well, no. Long story short, he was bitten last year as a sophomore. He didn't exactly deal with it pretty well."
"But he'll help us, right?" Liam stopped walking, looking me right in the eyes.
His face was close to mine, and I couldn't help but smile. "Of course he will. Scott cares about people."
"He cares about you. You're his sister."
"Yeah, and like it or not, we're both his betas."
"Right, I'm still confused about this whole thing." Liam brushed his hand through his hair, and smiled which sent a tingling feeling to wash over me.
"Liam, can I ask you something?" I asked, twirling my hair around in my fingers.
"Yeah, of course." He replied, his bag dropping off of his shoulder and onto the ground.
"What was in the box? The one you got from your locker."
"Oh!" He exclaimed, bending over to open the bag. His hands dug around for a while, before pulling out the box, and handing it to me. "Uh, Mason told me to give it to you."
I held the box in my hands, surprised that it was lighter than I thought it would be. "Mason? Why would he-"
"Just open it." Liam interrupted with a laugh.
I stared down at the box, wondering what could possibly be in it. I opened the lid, and I took in a deep breath as I saw what it was.
In the box, was a frame with a photo placed neatly in the middle. The photo was old, but I still remembered what it was from. I couldn't help but laugh at it.
"No way!" I yelled in excitement, pulling out the photo frame to let the box fall to the ground.
"My mom found it a few days ago. Mason told me to give it to you, he thought it would be funny."
"I hate you." I joked with a smile, slapping his arm playfully.
"Well, no one really forgets their first kiss."
Well, I guess I sorta had. The photo, was of Liam and I when we were both around three or four. The photo was taken at kindergarten, but I had no clue it was actually Liam I had kissed. I mean, I was three! This was just to weird, and to funny to be true.
"I mean, I can take it back if you want. I just thought it would be good to smile once in a while."
"What's that suppose to mean?" I asked with a sarcastic tone, flipping my hair over my shoulder. "I smile enough."
"Yeah, yeah I know." Liam nodded his head with a stifled laugh as he kept his eyes locked with mine. "Thank you, by the way."
"For what?"
He grinned, grabbing his bag off of the ground and slinging it onto his shoulder. "Everything."
My breathing became rapid as the biggest smile appeared on my face. Without speaking, I threw my arms around his back and rested my head against his chest. He returned the hug, his arms holding me tightly.
"This is weird." I mumbled, my voice muffled by his body against my face.
"It is?" Liam asked, his voice seeming more high pitched than usual.
"Well, yeah I guess. I've only known you less than a week and I feel like I can trust you." I placed my hand on the back of his neck, and held his shirt tightly. A strange feeling surged through me, knowing that I was even doing this.
A small laugh escaped him, his arms tightening around me. "I trust you too."
It hit me like a ton of bricks. I hadn't admitted it to myself, but I guess it really was true. I like him.
I felt him slowly pull away from me, so I did too. He stopped halfway though, his hands resting on my shoulders. We stared at each other, our eyes wide as we smiled.
"Would you hate me if I..." He paused, looking away from my eyes. His gaze fell upon my lips, the excitement rushing through me.
Does this mean what I think it means? Is this seriously happening? What do I do? I mean, I've kissed people before but this is different.
Without finishing his sentence, he began moving closer to me, closing the distance between us. His face was almost touching mine, causing a smile I couldn't hide. Both of us leant in further, our lips almost connecting.
Beep beep
The sound of a car horn sounded, startling Liam and I. We both jumped away from each other, searching the car park for what ever made the noise. A single dark car sat alone a few spaces away from us as someone stepped out from it.
"Uh..." Liam mumbled, shuffling on the spot as he ran his hand through his spiky hair.
The man leaned against the car, folding his arms. His dark skin and friendly face helped me to recall where I've seen him. He was the doctor from the hospital; the one Scott and I hid from when he left Liam's room.
"Liam!" He called with a soft voice and a light grin.
I turned to Liam, who gave the doctor a small salute with his hand. "That's my step-dad." He said through gritted teeth while he scrunched up his face.
"Oh." I muttered, waving at the man by the car awkwardly. He smiled at me and waved back. "Oh!" I shouted, sending my hand over my mouth. "Did he see that?"
"Uh..." Liam and I both looked at his step-dad, only to see him wink at us. "I-I think so."
My eyes widened but I laughed at how strange this must be for him. Pulling up to the school to see your fifteen year old son almost kissing a girl must be quite weird.
Damn. It was an almost kiss.
"I've gotta go." Liam muttered. I nodded my head in understanding and he hugged me one last time before running off towards the car.
I watched it pull out of sight, and sighed as I brought the photograph in the frame to my face. Great. I can kiss him when I'm three but I can't get a minute to try twelve years later.
The sound of an engine brought me out of my thoughts, and I saw Stiles' jeep pull up to the parking space in front of me. Scott and Stiles both jumped out, smiling at me as I grabbed the box the photo came in off of the ground, and placed the frame carefully back in it.
"What are you guys doing here? Mom was suppose to pick me up." I stated, holding the box in my arms.
"She had an early shift at work." Scott replied before he and Stiles awkwardly slung their arms around my neck as we walked slowly to the car..
"What's in the box?" Stiles asked, poking the side of it.
"Nothing." I answered, pulling away from him with a grin.
The three of us got in the car, me having to jump over to the back like always.
"Why were you hugging Liam?" Scott questioned with raised eyebrows as he glared at me in the rear view mirror.
My heart raced at his question, and I prayed he meant the hug Liam gave me before he left. Any hug after that would be... awkward to talk about.
"You saw that?" My voice raised as I shuffled in the seat with discomfort.
"Oh yeah. We were here for a while." Stiles answered as Scott nodded his head.
"And... and the kiss?"
"You mean the almost kiss?" Scott giggled, sending me a grin. "Saw that too."

School came faster than I wished it had. I blame Scott, who had to practically drag me out of bed this morning. I hadn't bothered to do anything fancy with my hair and makeup, so I felt like a zombie walking around the halls.
"Hey." Someone said as they bumped into me softly from behind.
I looked toward them, and was greeted with a smile by Liam.
"Hey." I said with a smile of my own.
"Walk me to the locker room?" He asked, sweat covering his forehead. In saying that, it wasn't a turn off for me.
I nodded my head in response, and tried to push away any tension that may have existed after yesterday. That almost kiss could end up being a kiss. Eventually...
When we reached the locker room, Liam dragged me in. I felt pretty strange about it, because I was afraid someone was going to walk in and see us. It seemed pretty dodgy Liam and I being in here, considering this is the boys locker room.
"What the hell?" Liam muttered as he searched his locker. "Where's my stick?"
"Did you leave it on the field when we were here on the weekend?" I asked, leaning against a wall by the door.
"No. No Mason and I put it back before he left us. It should be here!" He answered with a confused and agitated tone.
At the corner of my eye, I could see a shadow looming on the other side of the lockers. The shadow was followed by the sound of clattering, one which rung continuously in my head.
Liam turned the corner and I followed. He stopped in his tracks, his body becoming tense. I stood beside him, my head focused on the floor until I lifted it up to see Derek standing in between lockers; Liam's lacrosse stick in his hands.
"Is this yours?" Derek asked with a sly smile planted on his lips. He snapped the lacrosse stick in his hands; a flashback of him tearing Scott's one last year, replayed in my head.
My breathing became rapid as I noticed Liam's hands become fists. I tried to grab them in comfort, but he pulled away.
Liam ran straight for Derek, and honestly I didn't mind until Derek grabbed Liam by the neck and slammed him against the locker.
I ran towards them both, and tried tugging at Derek's arm. Before I knew it, Derek had grabbed me by the neck and had thrown me to the ground.
My head hit one if the lockers, and a headache rushed through me. I could only hope that it was caused by the impact, instead of me changing.
I watched on as Liam's eyes glowed yellow, his canines showing as he tried to fight against Derek's hold. I knew I could do something to help, but I knew that Derek wouldn't harm him.
"Liam." The familiar voice of my brother alarmed Derek, Liam and I. Standing up from the ground, I matched Scott's stance as I stood beside him.
"You're right." Derek started, his gaze leaving Liam to look at Scott. "He is angry."
Derek released Liam from his grip. Liam looked at me with sad eyes; a feeling that was mutual.
"This one's yours." Scott said as he held up a lacrosse stick. "Get to class Liam."
Liam nodded his head lightly, before walking up to Scott and I. He grabbed the lacrosse stick and my hand, beginning to walk away.
"Wait." I cut in, pulling my hand away from him. "I need to talk to Scott."
His face fell and he took one last look at Scott and Derek, before he showed his best smile to me. "I'll see you in class." He whispered before walking out.
"What are you smiling about?" Scott asked, his attention focused on Derek.
"You're gonna be good at this." Derek answered with a huge grin on his face.
"Are you kidding? I'm totally unprepared. I can't even protect my own sister."
"Don't talk about me like I'm not here." I said sternly, walking past Scott to stand in between the two.
"He's right, Jess. He can't be the only one to protect you. You're going to have to look out for yourself now." Derek said, his face showing understanding.
"Exactly. I didn't know this would happen. Remember how you said you could teach me a few things?" Scott complained, his voice rising. "I think, right now I could use a full-on training manual."
I laughed, crossing my arms as I leaned against the lockers again. I could see Scott trying to ignore my sarcasm by having the look on his face that read: I'm going to pretend you don't exist right now.
"Not to bother your brother sister bond right now, but Jess isn't the focus." Derek cut through the tension.
Scott nodded his head while I sighed. "Right, Liam." I said, somewhat sarcastic and somewhat curious.
"Yes. Look, Scott. I'll tell you one thing. That anger he's got? It'll make him stronger."
"And dangerous." Scott said, making eye contact with me again.
The two of them talked a while longer, while I blanked out and decided what to say. I needed to tell Scott about what happened on the weekend with Liam. What happened with the lacrosse ball and the net. Although, I don't think it will do much help. Scott's got a lot to think about, but Derek on the other hand may know something about it. Maybe it's normal for werewolves to have their own strengths. Mine being that weird little earthquake thing, and Liam's being... well, I guess strength.
"Do you think Lydia can get that second key?" Derek asked as I brought myself into focus again.
"She's working on it." Scott answered with a sigh.
At that moment, the bell rang and I hoped I'd have enough time to tell Derek before being late to class.
"Jess, come on." Scott said, tugging at my shirt.
"I need to talk to you." I said, my eyes on Derek.
"Go ahead." Derek responded with a nod of his head.
I could feel the empty space beside me, as Scott's footsteps left the room. I'll have to apologise for being so moody later.
"You're hiding something from me, aren't you?" Derek questioned, sending a shock of nervousness to go through me.
Suddenly, I didn't feel so good about telling him.
"Uh, no? No, no of course not."
Derek's eyes squinted as they studied my face closely. "You're lying."
I could tell how he knew. My heartbeat was becoming quicker by the second.
"Don't worry, Scott already told me." Derek interrupted before I got the chance to speak.
"Scott told you?" I asked, wondering how the hell he knew about Liam.
"Jess, you don't need to hide it. Whatever happened is rare. Sometimes werewolves adapt to certain abilities and lack in others. The whole earthquake thing may seem strange, but it's normal."
Bells rang in my ears as I took in what he said. Phew.
This answer was good in three ways. One, is that I know the thing I did on the full moon wasn't some crazy unique thing. Two, is that Derek has no idea what Liam did on the weekend. Three, being the fact that whatever Liam did, could be the same reason I was able to do mine.
"Is there something else I should know?" Derek asked, as I looked at my phone to check the time. I am so going to be late to class.
I decided to think about it. Telling him, may lead to Scott pulling Liam out of lacrosse. And I didn't want that. Not telling him, may mean someone dying on the field. That part I hated, but I found it unlikely. If anything, I should be worried about how Derek may take it. I think Liam will be okay... for now.
"Anything at all, just tell me." Derek continued.
I wrapped my hands around my backpack, prepared to take off to class.
"No. There's nothing at all."
