Chapter 48

The warehouse district was silent.

Rows of abandoned buildings stretched along the waterfront like sleeping giants, their rusted metal doors and shattered windows reflecting the pale glow of distant streetlights. The wind carried the scent of salt and oil from the harbor, stirring loose sheets of paper and dust along the empty pavement.

Three black SUVs rolled slowly into the shadows at the far end of the street before their engines finally cut.

The sudden quiet that followed felt heavier than the noise had.

Inside the first vehicle, Luca Romano sat very still.

His hands rested loosely on the steering wheel, but the tension in his shoulders betrayed the storm beneath his calm exterior.

Across the dashboard, the dim glow of a digital map flickered.

A small red marker pulsed on the screen.

Warehouse 17.

Leon studied it for a moment longer before looking out the windshield toward the dark building waiting at the far end of the road.

"That's the one," he said quietly.

Luca didn't answer.

The silence between them stretched for several seconds before Leon glanced sideways.

"You planning on sitting here all night?" he asked.

Still no response.

Luca's eyes remained fixed on the building ahead.

Behind them, the other vehicles had begun unloading men. Doors opened softly, boots touched pavement, and weapons were quietly checked under the dim glow of the streetlights.

Every man knew what tonight was.

A rescue.

Or a war.

Possibly both.

Leon finally leaned back in his seat, exhaling slowly.

"You're thinking too much again."

That got Luca's attention.

His eyes shifted briefly toward Leon before returning to the warehouse.

"Am I?"

"Yes."

Leon folded his arms.

"You only get quiet like this when you're deciding how much damage you're about to cause."

A faint, humorless smile touched Luca's mouth.

"You're not wrong."

Leon glanced at the warehouse again.

"You sure she's inside?"

"Yes."

The answer came immediately.

No hesitation.

Leon nodded slowly.

"Good."

Outside the car, their men had finished preparing.

One of them approached the driver's side window and tapped lightly.

Luca rolled it down.

"Positions are ready," the man said.

Luca nodded once.

"Wait for my signal."

"Yes, boss."

The man stepped back and returned to the others.

For another moment Luca remained seated, staring at the warehouse.

Leon studied him carefully.

"You're angry."

Luca's voice was calm.

"Yes."

"That usually means someone's about to die."

"Several people," Luca corrected quietly.

Leon didn't doubt it.

Still...

He shifted slightly in his seat.

Leon leaned forward slightly, resting his forearms on his knees.

"Whatever happens in there," he said, "we get her out."

Luca finally looked at him fully.

"Yes."

Leon hesitated.

Then he added:

"And we deal with Victor after."

The name lingered between them.

Victor Salvatore.

The man who had dared to take something from Luca Romano.

Luca's voice dropped slightly.

"No."

Leon frowned.

"No?"

Luca's eyes returned to the warehouse.

"We deal with him tonight."

Leon studied him for a long moment.

Then he nodded slowly.

Fair enough.

The two men sat in silence for a few more seconds before Luca finally reached for the door handle.

But before he opened it—

He stopped.

Leon noticed immediately.

"What?"

Luca didn't answer right away.

Instead he spoke quietly.

"Leon."

Leon turned toward him.

"Yes?"

Luca's voice was calm.

Too calm.

"If something happens tonight..."

Leon frowned instantly.

"Don't start that."

Luca continued anyway.

"If something happens to me," he said, "you take Rosalia and you leave."

Leon stared at him.

"That's not funny."

"I'm not joking."

Leon shook his head.

"No."

Luca's gaze hardened.

"You get her out of there. You don't stop. You don't look back."

Leon's expression darkened.

"We go in together. We come out together."

"Leon."

"No."

The word came out sharper this time.

"I'm not abandoning you in there."

Luca leaned slightly closer.

"That's not what I'm asking."

"Then what are you asking?"

Luca's voice lowered.

"I'm asking you to promise me."

Leon stared at him.

"No."

Luca didn't blink.

"If something happens to me," he repeated, "you get her out."

Leon's jaw tightened.

"And leave you behind?"

"Yes."

"Absolutely not."

Luca's voice hardened.

"That wasn't a request."

Silence filled the air

Leon looked at him for a long moment.

"You know," he muttered, "this is the part where you say something dramatic about brotherhood and sacrifice."

Luca almost smiled.

But the smile faded quickly.

"Just promise me."

Leon exhaled slowly.

For several seconds he said nothing.

Then finally

"Fine."

Luca looked at him.

Leon shook his head slightly.

"But only because if something actually happens to you, she'll kill me herself if I don't."

That earned a faint huff of amusement from Luca.

"Fair point."

Leon opened his door.

"Let's go get her."

Luca stepped out of the car.

The cold night air hit his face immediately.

Across the street, the warehouse loomed in the darkness.

Inside that building

Rosalia was waiting.

Luca pulled his gun from the holster at his side.

His voice was low.

"Move."

And the men of Luca Romano surged forward into the night.

The warehouse had grown tense.

Rosalia could feel it long before anyone said a word.

The men who had been standing casually around the room earlier were no longer relaxed. Their postures had changed in small but noticeable ways. Conversations had stopped. Several guards had quietly repositioned themselves closer to the entrances, their weapons now held more firmly in their hands.

Something was happening.

Victor Salvatore stood near the long wooden table where the documents had been spread out earlier. The papers had since been gathered neatly again, though the birth certificate remained on the table as if deliberately left there.

Alessia Isabella Moretti.

The name still echoed faintly in Rosalia's mind.

She pushed the thought away.

Now was not the time to be distracted by revelations about dead empires and buried inheritances.

Now was the time to pay attention.

Victor's calmness had changed slightly.

Not fear.

Never fear.

But awareness.

The kind of alertness that spread quietly through a room when experienced men knew something dangerous was approaching.

Rosalia leaned slightly against one of the metal support beams, watching him carefully.

"Something changed," she said.

Victor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he adjusted the cuff of his sleeve as though the conversation bored him.

"Perhaps."

Rosalia narrowed her eyes.

"You know something."

Victor finally looked at her.

"Yes."

The simple answer sent a small chill through her.

"And?" she asked.

Victor's lips curved slightly.

"And Luca Romano has decided to stop searching."

Rosalia's heart skipped.

Her voice came out steadier than she expected.

"He found this place."

Victor nodded once.

"It appears so."

Rosalia's pulse quickened.

She tried not to let the reaction show on her face.

But inside, something ignited.

He came.

Victor studied her expression with quiet interest.

"You seem pleased."

Rosalia lifted her chin.

"I'm not surprised."

Victor chuckled softly.

"No?"

"No," she said. "You kidnapped the wrong woman."

Victor tilted his head slightly.

"Is that so?"

Rosalia met his gaze.

"You think Luca would just let this go?"

Victor considered that for a moment.

"No," he admitted.

"I didn't."

He turned his attention toward the far side of the warehouse.

"Prepare the exits," he ordered.

Immediately several of the men began moving.

Two guards disappeared down one of the hallways while others repositioned themselves near the doors.

Weapons were checked.

Magazines were loaded.

The sound of metal sliding against metal echoed through the warehouse.

Rosalia watched all of it carefully.

"You're leaving," she said.

Victor glanced back at her.

"I'm adjusting the board."

"You mean running."

Victor smiled faintly.

"Strategy, Rosalia."

He stepped closer to her.

"Luca Romano is many things."

Rosalia didn't speak.

"But reckless isn't one of them," Victor continued.

"He won't storm a building blindly."

Rosalia's voice was quiet.

"He will for me."

Victor watched her for a moment before nodding slightly.

"Yes," he said.

"That's exactly what makes him dangerous."

A guard approached quickly.

"Boss."

Victor turned slightly.

"They're moving outside."

Rosalia's pulse jumped again.

Victor remained calm.

"How many?"

"At least fifteen."

Victor nodded thoughtfully.

"Romano doesn't like taking chances."

He turned back toward Rosalia.

"You see?"

Rosalia folded her arms.

Victor smiled.

His expression darkened slightly.

"And now we'll see how much he's willing to lose."

Before Rosalia could respond

The first gunshot echoed outside.

The sound cracked through the night like thunder.

Several men in the warehouse immediately snapped their weapons upward.

Another shot followed.

Then two more.

The chaos began almost instantly.

"Positions!" one of the guards shouted.

Men rushed toward the entrances.

Rosalia's heart pounded.

Gunfire erupted again outside, louder now, echoing off the metal walls of the building.

Victor remained completely still.

Almost... fascinated.

Rosalia stared at him.

"You expected this."

Victor's gaze flickered toward the door.

"Of course."

More gunshots rang out.

This time they were closer.

Inside the warehouse, tension exploded.

"Contact!" someone shouted.

A guard near the entrance fired back through the open doorway.

Bullets slammed into the metal walls, sparks bursting into the air.

Rosalia's breath caught.

He's truly here.

The realization hit her with equal parts fear and relief.

Somewhere outside that building

Luca Romano was coming.

Victor stepped away from the table.

"Move her," he said calmly.

Two guards immediately grabbed Rosalia's arms.

She twisted against them.

"Let go!"

They dragged her backward toward the deeper section of the warehouse.

Rosalia fought instinctively.

Her elbow drove backward into one guard's ribs.

The man grunted.

The other tightened his grip.

"Don't make this harder than it needs to be."

Rosalia's eyes flashed.

"You have no idea who you're dealing with."

Gunfire thundered again.

This time the warehouse doors burst open.

Wood splintered.

Metal screeched.

Several of Victor's men opened fire immediately.

And the war began.

The warehouse doors exploded inward.

Wood splintered violently as the heavy metal frame buckled under the force of the breach. The impact echoed through the massive building like thunder, followed instantly by the deafening crack of gunfire.

Victor's men fired first.

Muzzle flashes lit the dark interior in bursts of orange light as bullets tore through the air toward the entrance.

Outside, Luca's men answered immediately.

Gunfire erupted from both sides of the doorway, the noise ricocheting off the metal walls of the warehouse. Several crates shattered as bullets ripped through the wood, sending fragments spraying across the concrete floor.

Leon moved first.

"Left side!" he shouted over the noise.

Two of Luca's men broke away immediately, rushing toward the side entrance Leon had pointed out earlier. Another pair sprinted toward a stack of containers, using them for cover as they returned fire.

Luca didn't slow down.

He pushed through the broken doorway with terrifying precision, firing twice before his boots even fully crossed the threshold.

Two guards dropped instantly.

The first bullet caught one man square in the chest, slamming him backward into a stack of crates. The second shot hit another guard in the shoulder, spinning him sideways as his weapon clattered to the ground.

Chaos swallowed the warehouse.

Men shouted.

Bullets tore through metal and wood alike.

The sharp scent of gunpowder quickly filled the air.

Leon stormed in behind Luca, firing toward the raised platform near the back of the room where several guards had taken position.

"Right side clear!" one of their men yelled.

Another explosion of gunfire followed as Victor's men attempted to hold the line near the inner hallway.

Luca's eyes swept across the warehouse quickly, calculating.

Searching.

Rosalia.

He didn't see her yet.

But he could feel her presence somewhere inside that building.

Leon dropped behind a steel container beside him.

"Back corridor!" he shouted. "They're moving her!"

Luca's expression darkened.

"Not for long."

He stepped forward again, firing three controlled shots toward the guards trying to retreat deeper into the warehouse.

One fell.

Another dove behind a crate.

The third disappeared around the corner.

Luca advanced without hesitation.

Every step forward pushed Victor's men further back.

Behind him, Leon's team continued pouring into the building, spreading out through the warehouse floor with practiced coordination.

Some covered the entrances.

Others flanked the side corridors.

The battle had only lasted seconds so far.

But already the balance was shifting.

Victor's men had prepared for a fight.

They had not prepared for Luca Romano.

Across the warehouse, Rosalia struggled violently against the guards dragging her toward the back corridor.

Gunfire thundered around them.

The building shook with the noise.

"What the hell is happening?!" one of the guards shouted.

"You know exactly what's happening," the other replied.

Rosalia twisted suddenly, driving her heel backward into the man behind her.

He cursed loudly.

The grip on her arm loosened for just a second.

That was enough.

Rosalia spun and slammed her elbow into the other guard's jaw.

The impact snapped his head sideways.

Before he could recover, she shoved him hard into the wall and grabbed the weapon hanging loosely from his shoulder.

The man lunged for it.

Rosalia reacted instinctively.

She drove the butt of the gun upward into his face.

Bone cracked.

The guard collapsed instantly.

The second man recovered and rushed toward her.

Rosalia fired.

The recoil nearly tore the weapon from her hands, but the bullet struck the guard in the leg, sending him crashing to the ground with a scream.

For a brief moment

Rosalia stood alone.

The warehouse roared around her.

Gunshots echoed.

Men shouted.

But she was free.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly as she looked around.

Smoke hung thick in the air now.

Crates had been knocked over.

Several bodies lay scattered across the floor.

Then she saw him.

Across the chaos.

Moving through the smoke like something unstoppable.

Luca Romano.

Even in the middle of a gunfight, there was something terrifyingly calm about the way he moved.

Each shot he fired was precise.

Each step forward was deliberate.

Rosalia's breath caught.

Luca's eyes swept the warehouse again.

And then

They met hers.

For one brief moment, the war around them faded.

Rosalia felt something inside her chest tighten painfully.

He was here.

He had come for her.

And the look in Luca's eyes when he saw her was something she would never forget.

Relief.

Rage.

And something deeper.

Something fierce.

He began moving toward her immediately.

"Rosalia!" Leon's voice shouted somewhere behind him.

But Luca didn't slow.

He was almost halfway across the warehouse now.

Almost close enough to reach her.

Neither of them noticed the shadow moving along the upper platform above the fight.

Watching.

Waiting.

A familiar pair of eyes narrowed through the scope of a raised pistol.

Melissa.

Her breathing was steady.

Below her, the battle raged.

But she was focused on only one person.

Rosalia.

Her finger tightened slowly around the trigger.

And then

She fired.

The gunshot cracked through the warehouse.

At first it sounded no different from the dozens of other shots echoing through the building.

But for Luca Romano, that single shot felt different.

Instinct.

Years of surviving violence had sharpened his senses to something almost animal.

His eyes lifted.

Up.

Toward the metal platform running along the upper wall of the warehouse.

And there

A flash of movement.

A familiar figure.

Melissa.

Her arm extended.

The pistol aimed downward.

Not at him.

At Rosalia.

Luca's stomach dropped.

Everything slowed.

Rosalia had just started moving toward him through the smoke, the stolen weapon still clutched awkwardly in her hands. She had no idea where the shot was coming from.

No idea someone was aiming directly at her chest.

Luca didn't think.

He moved.

Two long strides closed the distance between them.

"Luca—"

Rosalia barely had time to say his name before his arm wrapped around her waist.

He pulled her violently toward him.

Then turned.

Positioning his body between her and the gunfire.

The second shot rang out.

The bullet struck him just below the shoulder.

For a split second, nothing happened.

Then the force of the impact drove Luca half a step backward.

Rosalia felt it instantly.

The sudden jerk of his body.

The sharp breath he sucked in.

And then

Warmth.

A spreading warmth against her hands.

Rosalia looked down.

Blood.

Bright red.

It poured steadily through the fabric of Luca's black shirt.

Her breath caught in her throat.

"No..."

Luca's grip on her tightened.

"Stay behind me."

His voice was low.

Controlled.

As if nothing had happened.

But Rosalia could feel the tension in his body now.

The stiffness in the arm still holding her.

Across the warehouse, Leon saw it happen.

His voice exploded across the room.

"Luca!"

Gunfire intensified instantly as Leon and the others pushed forward, bullets tearing across the upper platform where Melissa had been standing.

Melissa ducked behind a steel beam as the return fire shredded the railing beside her.

Sparks exploded from the metal.

But the damage had already been done.

Below, Luca staggered once.

Rosalia grabbed him.

"Luca—"

"I'm fine."

The lie came automatically.

His breathing had grown heavier now.

Blood continued spreading across his shirt, dark and glistening beneath the warehouse lights.

Rosalia's hands trembled as she tried to hold him upright.

"You're not fine."

Luca ignored the panic in her voice.

His eyes lifted again toward the platform.

Melissa had already disappeared.

Coward.

His jaw tightened.

"Leon!" he shouted.

Leon rushed toward them, two of their men covering his advance with heavy gunfire.

He slid behind a crate beside Luca and Rosalia, quickly scanning the wound.

"Damn it."

"It's nothing," Luca said.

Leon shot him a look.

"You're bleeding through two layers of clothing."

"I've had worse."

Rosalia stared at him.

"You just got shot!"

Luca finally looked at her.

For a brief second the chaos of the battle faded.

All he saw was her face.

Alive.

Unharmed.

Worth it.

"Did it hit you?" he asked quietly.

Rosalia blinked.

"What?"

"Did the bullet hit you?"

"No."

"Good."

Relief flickered across his expression.

Rosalia felt her chest tighten painfully.

"You idiot," she whispered.

A faint smile ghosted across Luca's mouth.

"Probably."

Another burst of gunfire ripped across the warehouse.

Leon leaned closer.

"We need to move."

Luca nodded once.

But before Leon could help him stand

Another guard rushed from behind one of the containers.

Leon fired instantly.

The man dropped.

But the momentary distraction was enough.

Luca's strength faltered.

His knees buckled slightly.

Rosalia grabbed him immediately.

"Luca!"

Leon caught him from the other side.

"Stay with me, brother."

Luca tried to steady himself.

But the blood loss was beginning to show.

The world around him felt strangely distant.

His voice came out rougher now.

"Leon."

Leon tightened his grip on him.

"Yeah?"

Luca's eyes hardened.

"Take her."

Leon frowned.

"What?"

"Get her out."

Rosalia shook her head violently.

"No."

Luca ignored her.

"You promised."

Leon's expression darkened.

"Now's not the time for that conversation."

Luca grabbed his jacket collar with surprising strength.

"Leon."

The seriousness in his voice made Leon freeze.

"Take her," Luca repeated quietly.

"Now."

Rosalia stared at him in disbelief.

"You're not staying here."

Luca looked at her.

For a moment his expression softened.

"Rosalia—"

"No."

Her voice broke.

"We're leaving together."

Another gunshot echoed somewhere behind them.

Victor's remaining men were beginning to retreat deeper into the warehouse.

Leon's eyes darted around the room quickly.

The situation was shifting.

"Luca," he said urgently.

But Luca was already fading.

His grip loosened slightly.

"Luca?"

He blinked slowly.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"Get her out..."

Then his body collapsed.

Leon caught him before he hit the ground.

Rosalia screamed his name.

For a moment, the world around Rosalia stopped.

The gunfire.

The shouting.

The chaos tearing through the warehouse.

All of it faded beneath the single horrifying reality in front of her.

Luca Romano was lying in Leon's arms.

Blood spread rapidly across his shirt, soaking into the dark fabric and dripping onto the concrete floor beneath them.

Rosalia dropped to her knees beside him.

"Luca...?"

Her voice trembled.

He didn't answer.

His head had fallen slightly to the side, his dark hair partially covering his face.

Rosalia grabbed his hand desperately.

It was still warm.

But limp.

"Luca!"

Leon was already working quickly, pressing his hand hard against the wound in Luca's shoulder to slow the bleeding.

"Stay with me," Leon muttered.

More gunfire erupted somewhere across the warehouse.

Luca's men were pushing forward aggressively now, forcing Victor's remaining guards back through the deeper corridors of the building.

The fight was turning.

But Leon barely noticed.

His entire focus was on the man bleeding in front of him.

"Come on, brother," Leon growled quietly.

Rosalia's hands shook as she touched Luca's face.

"Luca... please..."

There was no response.

Fear exploded through her chest.

"No no no..."

She shook him lightly.

"You don't get to do this."

Leon looked up sharply.

"Rosalia—"

"He can't die," she said.

Her voice cracked.

"He can't."

Leon's expression hardened.

"He's not dead."

Rosalia's eyes filled with tears.

"But he's not waking up!"

Leon grabbed her shoulders firmly.

"Listen to me."

She looked at him.

"We don't have time for this."

Another explosion of gunfire echoed through the building.

One of Luca's men ran toward them.

"Leon! We need to move!"

Leon nodded quickly.

"Cover the exits!"

The man rushed off again.

Leon turned back to Rosalia.

"You need to go."

She stared at him like he had just said something insane.

"I'm not leaving him."

"You are."

"No."

Leon's jaw tightened.

"You don't understand."

Rosalia shook her head violently.

"No, you don't understand!"

Her voice broke.

"I'm not abandoning him!"

Leon grabbed her arm.

"Rosalia."

"Let go!"

She tried to pull away.

Leon held firm.

"Rosalia, listen to me."

She looked at him through tear-blurred eyes.

"Luca made me promise."

The words froze her.

"What?"

Leon's voice lowered.

"Before we came in here."

Rosalia's heart pounded.

"What promise?"

Leon's grip tightened slightly.

"If anything happened to him..."

He swallowed hard.

"...I get you out."

Rosalia stared at him in disbelief.

"No."

"Yes."

"No!"

Her voice echoed through the warehouse.

"I'm not leaving him here!"

Leon's eyes flicked briefly toward the deeper corridor where the fighting was still happening.

Victor was escaping.

They both knew it.

But that wasn't what mattered now.

Leon looked back down at Luca.

Blood continued spreading beneath him.

Too much blood.

Too fast.

Leon's chest tightened.

"Damn it, Luca..."

He closed his eyes for a second.

Then looked at Rosalia again.

"You think he took that bullet for nothing?"

Rosalia's breath caught.

"If you stay here," Leon continued, "then what he did means nothing."

Her tears spilled over.

"I can't leave him."

Leon's voice hardened.

"You have to."

Rosalia shook her head helplessly.

Leon made the decision.

He stood abruptly, grabbing her arm and pulling her up.

"Leon!"

She struggled immediately.

"No!"

Leon didn't let go.

"We're leaving."

"I'm not going!"

She tried to run back toward Luca.

Leon caught her around the waist and physically dragged her backward.

Rosalia screamed.

"Luca!"

Her voice echoed through the warehouse.

But Luca didn't move.

Leon forced himself not to look back.

Because if he did

He might not leave.

Two of their men appeared beside them.

"Boss!"

Leon nodded toward the exit.

"Move!"

The men immediately formed a protective circle around them as they pushed toward the broken warehouse doors.

Rosalia fought the entire way.

Her nails dug into Leon's arm.

"Let me go!"

He didn't.

"Leon please!"

Her voice cracked completely.

"Please..."

But Leon kept moving.

Outside, the cold night air slammed into them.

The remaining SUVs were still waiting in the shadows.

Leon shoved the door of the nearest vehicle open and pushed Rosalia inside.

She tried to get back out.

He slammed the door shut before she could.

"Go!" he shouted at the driver.

The engine roared to life instantly.

Rosalia pounded her fists against the window.

"Leon!"

But the car was already moving.

Back inside the warehouse

The battle was ending.

Victor Salvatore stood in the far corridor, listening to the retreating sounds of the fight.

One of his men approached cautiously.

"They're leaving."

Victor nodded slowly.

"And the girl?"

"Gone."

Victor's gaze flickered briefly toward the warehouse floor where Luca Romano lay unmoving.

A faint smile touched his lips.

"Interesting."

He turned and walked toward the back exit.

"Clean up what you can," he ordered.

"Yes, boss."

Victor stepped into the darkness beyond the warehouse.

And disappeared.

Miles away, inside the speeding SUV

Rosalia sat frozen.

Her breathing was uneven.

Her hands were still covered in Luca's blood.

The image replayed in her mind again and again.

The gunshot.

His body turning.

The moment he fell.

Her voice came out as barely more than a whisper.

"Leon..."

He didn't answer.

"Is he...?"

Leon stared out the windshield.

His voice was quiet.

"I don't know."

Rosalia closed her eyes.

And for the first time since she met Luca Romano...

She truly believed he might be gone.
