Chapter 18: Dear Harry
The pier was quieter than it had any right to be.
Even the waves seemed to hush themselves, like they knew something sacred was about to happen. The breeze rustled the fabric of Harry's shirt, warm and slow, but he barely noticed. He sat with his legs dangling over the edge, his elbows braced on his knees, the envelope resting between his hands like it was made of glass.
He had been staring at it for what felt like forever.
The name on the front was written in her familiar handwriting - soft curves, a little tilt to the right, the "y" in Harry looped at the end like a ribbon. The small heart next to it, just ink, just paper, somehow heavier than all the waves beneath him.
He hadn't moved since he sat down.
The sun had dipped lower, casting the sky in a golden blue that made everything look painted. But his eyes were locked on her goodbye, sealed shut in that single fold of paper.
He turned the envelope over slowly, running his thumb along the flap. It was still unopened. Still full of whatever she couldn't say in person. He hated that.
He hated that he didn't get to see her face when she said it.
He hated that the night before - the laughter, the dancing, the way her fingers tangled in his hair, the way her body curled into his like it belonged there - had ended in silence.
He wanted to be angry.
But all he felt was hollow.
And scared.
He didn't want to know what was inside... because once he read it, there would be no more guessing. No more wondering if she was coming back. No more maybe.
Still, he couldn't carry it around anymore.
He blew out a slow breath, cleared his throat for no reason at all, and whispered to the envelope like it was her:
"Okay, D..."
And then, with hands that weren't quite steady...
He opened it.
Dear Harry,
I don't even know how to begin - and they say songwriters are supposed to be good with words. The truth is, we are... when we're writing for thousands. When it's for one person - someone who matters - we're absolutely rubbish. Hence, the songs.
So I'll start with this: thank you.
Thank you for letting me be part of this album. Working with you and your team was more than music - it was magic. It meant the world to me. Every moment felt like a dream I didn't know I'd been carrying.
But what I loved most... was working with you.
You see me, Harry. You get what I'm about - without me ever needing to explain it. We're more alike than you think.
I adored being in that studio with you. Watching your face light up when a chord landed right, hearing the way your voice fills a room. You have something, Harry. A light. You command the space. Very few people can do that.
There's no doubt in my mind - this album will change your life.
And don't forget the choir, okay? Haha. Trust me. It'll work.
You probably think you owe me something for the help. But the truth is, I owe you. I've never felt so full. So inspired. So seen.
You came into my life exactly when I needed you most.
And now you're on the edge of something extraordinary. You're ready to take on the world - and you will. I believe in you so much.
Harry... last night was incredible.
Maybe the best night of my life.
I'm so sorry I had to leave like this. So unbelievably sorry. It has nothing to do with you. It was just... time. And after last night, I knew I couldn't look into your eyes and say goodbye. My heart would've shattered.
You never asked me to promise anything.
But I fell for you anyway.
Please don't look for me.
Just go. Be great. Be you.
I love you.
D.
He read it once.
And then again.
And then a third time - slower, this time. Letting each word settle in the spaces she left behind.
When he reached "You never asked me to promise anything, But I fell for you anyway," his throat tightened like a rope was being pulled slowly inside his chest.
The edges of the letter trembled in his grip.
He wiped at his eyes with the back of his hand, clumsy and quick, like it would make it easier if no one saw. But there was no one to see. Just the ocean. Just the sky. Just the words she left behind.
Please don't look for me.
Just go. Be great. Be you.
He let out a breath that caught halfway.
He wanted to be angry. God, he wanted to curse or shout or throw something into the sea just for the hell of it. He wanted to say you don't get to leave like this, you don't get to love me and disappear.
But he couldn't.
Because deep down, he knew her.
And this - this exit, this ache - it was her way of protecting something delicate. Herself. Him. The music. All of it.
So instead, he pressed the letter to his knee, folded carefully in half, and stared out at the waves with tears in his eyes and her name in his mouth.
He didn't say it out loud.
He didn't have to.
She was everywhere now.
And somehow, he already missed her more than he thought possible.
