Chapter 38.
NIKOLAS
I am grateful she has recalled all that happened in the past. From the look in her eyes, she remembers that one detail I deliberately left out when relating the ordeals of her life to her. I actually planned to let her know about it today.
We are currently at the hospital waiting for progress report from the doctor. Beside me is a crying Amelia who I have been trying to keep calm since her mom fainted.
"Mimi, she will be fine." I console.
"What is she dies, Uncle Niko?" She says in her low voice. The strings in my heart pulled painfully in my chest at the fact that she called me Uncle instead of Daddy or any other name that implies me being her father.
"I promise nothing will happen to your mummy." I say reassuringly as I place her on my laps to stroke her hair till she falls asleep.
"Mr. Galanis, she is awake now. You can go in to see her." The Doctor says, smiling. I sigh in relief and carefully lift up my precious daughter who was lying on my laps before heading to her hospital room.
Slowly, I open the door and step in. She turns her face in the other direction, not wanting to look at me.
"Amethyst." I call out, receiving no response from her.
"Amy." I call again, still no response.
"I know you can hear me. I am sorry. It was not what it looked like. I did not even know her. She came into my office and I was trying to push her off me when you coincidentally walked in." I try to explain.
"Liar." She says from the other side. I circle round the bed to stop in front of her and notice her eyes brimming with tears. I reach out to her face to clean them as seeing her in this state broke my heart. Thankfully, this time she allows me.
"I came that day to tell you I was pregnant with our child but I was welcomed with that sight, Nikolas." She raises her voice a little, resulting to Amelia stirring in my arms. She shifts to the edge of the bed to make space for her.
"You could put her here." She pats the bed and I do so.
"You cheated on me. For once I thought that the love thing between us was so surreal to be true but the foolish vulnerable part of me shut that thought out. Imagine my shock that day when I saw you with her." She shoots daggers my way before shutting her eyes.
"Amelia, moro, agapimeni, please look at me." I plead, holding her hands in mine.
"Leave me alone." She states calmly.
"I can't, not this time and in this state." I say, reaching out for my phone in my pocket to open up the video in my gallery.
"Look at this. It is the CCTV footage from that day." She watches the video and bursts out in tears.
"I was purely innocent. That was the first and last time I saw that face because hell, she does not even work at the company. I would never cheat on you, Amethyst. Never." I sigh in frustration.
"I am sorry I doubted your love for me." She apologizes.
"It was what you saw and I guess the pregnancy hormones had its toll on you too." I take her into my arms, carressing her hair.
"The accident. It was planned, Nick. Someone wanted me dead. It was carefully ochestrated to look like an accident." Her body shakes as she speaks.
"I promise to get to the bottom of it." I will get the person or persons behind the attempt on her life and the many years I missed in the growth of my daughter.
I lean in and place a kiss on her lips, lingering there and not ready to pull back. I let out a deep sigh of content. The familiar feeling of warmth spreadt through me. It has been six solid years since I had a kiss with her and it still felt the same. The same high school boy feeling on the inside. Like I am the luckiest man on earth.
"I love you so much, Nikolas." She says as she takes a pause to gasp for air.
"I love you too, moro." I reply her, placing a soft kiss on her forehead. Finally.
"Remember we haven't told Amelia who I am." I say.
"She is already accustomed to you, so it won't be a problem. It seems you both have yourselves wrapped across your fingers and the two of you don't even know about it." She chuckles as she speaks.
"We could break it to her tomorrow morning. How about we go to my hotel suit this night? There is a spare bedroom for her to sleep." I state, shrugging.
"More like a spare room for me and her?" She raises an eyebrow, nudging me with her elbows.
"No, for her. I have missed my wife." I let out a scowl which makes her laugh.
"I hope she sleeps well this night because my baby girl is already used to her mother." She says.
"Well, she has to start getting used to it because soon enough that is how it will continue." We both laugh, causing Amelia to stir.
"Sleep, baby." I coo, kissing her on the forehead and petting her back to sleep as I place her back in my arms.
"Guess it is time to get you discharged. I dislike the smell of hospitals." I say with distate.
"Nobody likes it. I am sure even the medical personnels do not." She chuckles as we head to get her checked out.
AMETHYST
"Wakey, wakey." I hear Nikolas say in a sing-song voice.
"Who put the sun in here?" I let out a yawn as I squint my eyes in the overly bright room.
"Should I switch off the light, moro mou?" He asks.
"No." I reply shortly.
"Stop being cranky." He jumps on the bed and starts tickling me, making me laugh.
"Nick... Nikolas.. you know...h... how I g...get when you... when you.. tickle me.." I struggle to say as I squirm under him. He stops with the tickle war and just lays above me, staring at me with his hands placed at the sides of my head.
"You look so beautiful this early morning." He states before he leans in to place a kiss on my lips.
"Thank you." I reply, suddenly shy.
"Shit! Amelia?" I ask.
"She's already awake in her room, watching a cartoon." He answers.
"You are spoiling this girl too much. Cartoon this early?" I say, raising my eyebrows in an attempt to scold him.
"Look at the clock, sweetie. It is 10am already, sleepy head." I face palm myself as the realization dawns on me.
Nikolas holds my hands in his as we walk together to meet Amelia.
"If you don't want to tell her now, it is okay." He voices out but his eyes depicted something entirely different, he yearned for that complete affection that comes with being a father. I just smile and gently squeeze his hands.
"Good morning, mummy. Hello, Uncle Niko." She says and her eyes go back to the television.
"Hey, baby. We have something to tell you and it requires you being away from the TV." I state.
"Okay, mummy." Nikolas turns it off and she stares at us with her big lovely eyes. We take a seat on the small sofa in the room, while she sits on the bed.
"Baby, you remember when you asked about your daddy and told me of how everyone at school thought your daddy never loved you and that is why he is not with you?" Nikolas gasps at what I said.
"Yes, mummy." She says, sadly, playing with her fingers.
"I have good news for you, baby." I say.
"Really?" Her face lights up at what I said.
"Well, Nikolas is your father, baby." I say. I watch as she looks from me to Nikolas and then back to me. She gets off the bed and walks straight to Nikolas. Surprisingly, she spread her hands and engulfs him in a hug.
"I love you, daddy." I let out a sigh of relief. Well, that went better than I expected.
"Don't cry, daddy." She says in a tender voice as her small hands clean the tiny drops of tears that flowed down Nick's face.
"I love you so much, baby."
"Please don't leave me, daddy."
"I promise, baby girl. Until my last breath." He kisses her passionately on the forehead. I watch the father-daughter moment in awe and chuckle when Nikolas drags me into a group hug with them.
