Chapter 23

Jillian panicked and quickly ducked behind the counter. The three pirates hadn't noticed her yet due to the crowded nature of the tavern. Inching around the side of the counter, she could see them speaking to one of the usual patrons, a large farmer.

Not waiting to see what they would do next, Jillian hurried out from behind the counter and nearly ran smack into Bertha, who almost dropped her carton.

"Watch where you're going!" the barmaid snapped.

"I need to hide!" Jillian said, hurrying to the supply closet that was left ajar.

"What?"

Before closing the door, she whisphered, "Tell them I'm not here!" In the darkness, she crouched uncomfortably amongst the boxes and found a hole in the wooden door. Pressing her eye to it, she found she could see the whole room.

Robinson, Sparky, and Eye-Eye approached Bertha, who was casually cleaning a glass.

"What will it be, boys?" she asked, barely looking at them.

Sparky rasied a hand, "I'll take a-oof!" Eye-Eye elbowed him in the gut to shut him up.

The pirate captain leaned closer. "We're looking for somebody," he said, so quietly that Jillian barely could hear him.

Bertha glowered at him. "If you're looking for trouble, take it outside, dollface." Jillian snickered at the nickname and Robinson's reddened face.

Eye-Eye stepped in. "We don't want to fight," he said. "We're looking for a girl, actually. We got separated and its high time we found her again." Jillian was stunned. Was this the same person who told her that she couldn't be trusted?

"She has dark hair and purple eyes," Sparky added helpfully.

Bertha crossed her arms. "Never heard of anyone like that." They looked dumbstruck.

"But-but we were told she was here!"

"If she was, she isn't anymore. Now get lost."

"Please," Robinson said, almost pleadingly. "You have to know where she is." Jillian had never heard him sound like that before. She was about to come out when she stopped. They were just trying to get Bertha to tell them where she was. But then why were they looking for her? She gasped as her mind assumed the worst. They were going to turn her in to Sheriff Anton for the reward money! Boulder had seen her WANTED poster and must have told the others. How could she have been so stupid to tell them she was an enchantress?

Jillian was so wrapped up in her panicked thoughts she hardly heard the rest of the conversation.

"As I said before," Bertha said, pointing her frying pan at them threatingly. "She isn't here. You're making a scene. Get out before I use this on you."

Eye-Eye opened his mouth. "Ma'am please-." He didn't get any farther as Bertha swung her frying pan, catching him on the side of the head. He would have hit the floor but Sparky caught him from behind.

There was an uproar as Robinson drew his sword and pointed it at Bertha, who didn't look worried the slightest. He had a murderous expression on his face. It was similar to how Eye-Eye looked when Jillian struck Robinson that night.

The farmers and lumberjacks all stood up and came closer. "Now get on out of here," one of them said to the pirates. He was about to grab Robinson's shoulders when Sparky threw his dagger, nicking the back of his hand. The man eyed the thin cut and then looked as if he was about to walk away. Quick as a wink, he turned back around and punched Sparky hard across the jaw.

It descended, as they say, to chaos. All the men in the tavern began fighting eachother. Fistfights broke out everywhere. Some threw bottles which smashed against the walls, showering glass and alcohol over everyone's heads. A few even upturned tables and smashed chairs. Robinson was taking on the man who punched Sparky, dodging blows and poking him lightning fast with the tip of his sword. Not hurting him, but hard enough to make him angry.

Eye-Eye discovered a drawer full of knives and seemed to be practicing his aim as he pinned men to the walls and tables by their shirts. He looked alright save for the immense swelling on the side of his head. Sparky was running around like a madman, dodging brawling men and tossing little firecrackers between their feet. He cackled everytime one went off and heard the satisfying shout of surprise.

Jillian watched in horror. They're going to kill each other! she thought frantically.

The saving grace was Bertha. "THAT'S ENOUGH!" she roared, her face as red as her hair. "ALL OF YOU, GET OUT!"

They didn't need to be told twice. All the men stopped fighting and stumbled towards the door. A few mumbled apoligies but Bertha just grunted. Robinson did a last sweep of the tavern before heading out the door. Jillian's stomach did a jolt as his green eyes lingered on the closet door for a second before he stormed out, dragging the other two behind him.

Bertha used her pan to persuade the last few stragglers to move faster before slamming the door shut and locking it.

Jillian sat back away from the hole, finally feeling she could relax. Her legs had fallen asleep from kneeling for so long. Suddenly the door was flung open and Bertha glared down at her.

"Alright, out with it," the woman snapped. "What is going on?"
