Chapter 41
The following night, there was a terrible thunderstorm. There weren't any caves or outcroppings of rocks for shelter so the crew resorted to crafting weak lean-to's that were about as watertight as a strainer. Jillian wrapped her wet cloak around her as she tried to sleep. The rain was cold but luckily it wasn't freezing her due to her powers. Just uncomfortable. Besides being soaked to the skin, the crashing of trees in the wind and booms of thunder kept her wide awake. Before going to sleep, Rosie had showed her the map and said they were close to the border of the Snow Queen's territory so their miserable journey would soon be over. But how much longer could they hold on?
Jillian rolled over and collided into the person laying next to her. "Sorry, Rosie," she mumbled.
There was a cough and a voice mumbled, "No problem." It wasn't Rosie's.
"Robinson!" Jillian exclaimed sitting bolt upright. "What are you doing?"
"Well, I was trying to sleep until your elbow hit me in the back." He sat up as well, pulling his blanket up with him. He coughed hard into his elbow.
Jillian hit him lightly on the arm. " I meant, what are you doing sleeping next to me?"
He gave a sly smile. "What? Rosie can sleep here and not me?" His tone was light and teasing, but she detected something else in his eyes.
"Well..." Jillian began but trailed off. What was is about Robinson that made him different from the others? She was the only girl so many might think that would make her wary around everyone in the crew. But Rosie was her confidant in many things. Quiet, thoughtful, she always felt safe around him. Smalls was a child so there was no problem there. Jackson was her brother. Boulder was a gentle giant and kept to himself. Even Sparky and Eye-Eye preferred each other's company over her own.
But Robinson? He was still a mystery to her. He had never tried to do anything to her and he protected her many times but being alone with him was odd.
"I-I'm not sure. I guess you make me kind of nervous," Jillian confessed, looking away.
"I do?" Robinson sounded seriously worried. "Jill, if I ever done anything to scare you I never meant it. I'm sorry-"
"Forget it!" she said quickly, waving her hands. "Its okay, I mean it. Forget I said anything." She internally kicked herself. Now she made everything worse.
The Captain was quiet for a moment. "Why?" he finally asked.
Jillian tried to come up with the right words. "Um, I guess its because I don't know the real you." He didn't say anything so she continued. "You are sometimes bossy and mean. You've argued with everyone here and made me angry and frustrated more than once. But... you are also kind. You saved me many times, Robinson and I remember them all. I'm just confused at bit on to who you are."
Robinson sighed. "When I worked for Captain Hook, I learned you had to be tough and calloused to get what you wanted or people would walk right over you. When I took over I adopted that kind of command. Order everyone about, your opinion was the right one, and don't take no for an answer. Only "yes, captain." For a pirate, you had to be the commander or the commanded."
"But you don't have to be like that anymore," Jillian said earnestly. "I see that this crew really does care about you and value your leadership. They'll follow you anywhere even without the threats and orders."
"Maybe I'll try that." He tried to give her a winning smile but he coughed hard into his blanket.
Jillian's brow wrinkled in concern. "Are you okay?"
Robinson cleared his throat. "I'm fine."
She put her hand to his forehead. "You're warm!"
"I'm fine," Robinson repeated firmly. He looked pale and was continuously shivering.
Jillian threw off her blanket and made to stand up. "I'm going to as Boulder to get something for you."
Robinson looked as if he was going to protest but several things happened at once. There was a bright flash of light right above their heads and a loud crack sounded from above. Suddenly, a large branch landed on top of their lean-to, partially collapsing it. Jillian screamed and she could hear the others yelling close to them
"Are you alright!" Robinson yelled, crawling towards her. He grabbed her arm.
"I'm fine!" she said, trying to push the branches away that trapped them in.
Robinson began pulling at the branched too until a hole was made. Jackson and Rosie helped pull them out.
"That was close!" Eye-Eye gasped. "The lightning struck the tree above you!" He was drenched and a dark liquid was running from his lip.
"What happened to you?" the captain demanded.
"Sparky punched me," Eye-Eye said, looking pained and worried. "Then he ran off into the trees! Boulder ran after him."
"What!" Robinson choked. He coughed twice then said, "Where?"
Eye-Eye soundlessly pointed in the direction, looking scared.
Robinson told Jillian to stay at the campsite with Smalls and Rosie but she was worried about Sparky so she followed them into the trees. It was worse than in the clearing. It was even darker and the wind caused the trees to sway and crash together. Rain poured down her face and into the neck of her cloak, making it impossible to see. The calls of the others were muffled in the din of the storm. She grew more worried as there was no sign of Sparky or Boulder anywhere.
Jackson caught up to her. "Put patches of ice on the trees," he instructed. "Then we can find our way back." She nodded absently and began touching the trunks of the trees as she went, straying a bit from the others. She worried that if they were in all one group, they'd never find Sparky. Up ahead, she heard rushing water. A stream, swollen from the storm, was rushing violently across the rocks. She slowly approached it, hoping Sparky hadn't tried to cross it.
Jillian was about to call the others when she saw a dark figure on the opposite banks, walking through the trees. "Sparky!" she shouted. The figure didn't seem to hear her and kept walking. She ran closer to the river and jumped on a rock so they would see her. She was about to call again, when her foot slipped and with a gasp, plunged into the torrent.
She went completely under and she flailed and struggled to reach the surface. The current was so strong what she couldn't get her footing. Jillian's head momentarily broke the surface and she barely got another breath before going under again. Her clothes were heavy and waterlogged. With a scream, Jillian was carried over some rapids, the world full of nothing but rushing water. Her head hit a rock and she knew nothing more.
