Jade's escape

Jade opens her eyes, peering at her thick brown fur. She still aches from last night's beating. Humans are cruel creatures. Abusive. She stands up, wincing as pain stabs at her hind leg. She opens the latch of the cage with her teeth, a trick she's been practicing in order to escape. She slips out lithe as a snake, passing shattered bottles of wine and liquor-a strange liquid humans drink, though Jade is not sure what purpose it serves. It's barely dawn, and thankfully the humans don't get up until the sun is well above the sky-a perfect time to escape. She doesn't belong to these humans, she belongs to no one. She will never trust again, not after that. Jade creeps through the front door, left half-open. It's always like that after the humans drink the liquid, they forget to close it. Sometimes strange humans in mask come in and take things. Jade is outside, finally free. She runs, fast as the wind and never looks back. She is free.
