"Who's Maddie?" I asked as Henry sat down next to me. My father had left, it was just us two now.
"So you heard." he sighed and leaned back into the sofa.
I watched him thinking it through, the cogs turning in his brain. I'd hit a sensitive spot and I knew it. I'd completely understand if he turned around and told me it's none of my fucking business.
I took his hand in mine. "It's okay if you don't want to share Henry, I understand." I rubbed my thumb gently across the soft skin of his hand.
"Sorry, it's just, I hadn't thought about her lately." he sighed. "She was my childhood sweetheart and I lost her because of who I was. My father, he was the original boss. So one day they targeted a car that Maddie and I was in as some kind of act of war and Maddie didn't survive." A lonely tear escaped his welling eye and rolled down his cheek.
"I'm so sorry." I said as I propelled myself forward and wrapped my arms around him. I held him tight until he let go.
"It was a long time ago," he paused. "I guess it's the reason I'm a sad, lonely bachelor." he chuckled.
"You don't seem sad to me, I mean apart from the last 10 minutes." I stumbled over my words.
His hands on my waist, he guided me towards him, leg either side, I sat on his lap. I wiped the trail his tear left away. He held me, gazing into my ocean eyes, a smile burst from the corners of his mouth across his face.
"That's because when I'm with you, all you do is make me smile. You're an enigma, one I needed."
I smiled and rested my forehead against his. His lips touched mine and suddenly we were kissing, his hands searched my body gracefully, lifting my top over my head. I laid back on the sofa, he removed my jeans and found his way between my legs. I pulled his top off and threw it on the floor. I wrapped my legs around him as he kissed my neck. I was gasping for air as our bodies moved together like we were making a symphony.
I grabbed the blanket on the way back to the sofa and laid down next to him, wrapping up both of us. Under the blanket his fingertips danced on my bare skin. "I probably shouldn't say this, but I think I'm falling for you Daisy."
I took a deep breath in. How could he be falling for me? Who even was I? Delilah? Jessica? Daisy? I didn't know. So how could he know. How could he fall for who I was when that was ultimately not available. My identity checked out that night my father left. Yet somehow, he could see past the inner sinner that plagued me. Instead, he trailed his fingers across my skin like I was an innocent song bird.
"But why?" I questioned. My thoughts swirled. I would never be good enough for love. I didn't deserve it. But why would anyone want me? I'm despicable, broken. An incomplete puzzle that gets tossed aside, that's who I was. That's the only love I'd known.
"It's how you make me feel Dais, I don't feel like a ghost of myself when I'm with you. I feel real." he spoke softly.
My thoughts stopped dead at his words. He was right. I could feel myself breathe again. I was taking air into my lungs for maybe the first time in years and it was no coincidence that it was when I was with him.
But love? Could I really be falling in love? The only love I knew was that of desperation and driven by survival. The truth was I didn't know what real love was.
"Daisy?" Henry whispered softly, bringing me back to life.
"I'm sorry, I just, I, I'm okay, I was just thinking." I stuttered horrendously.
He cupped my cheek with the clammy palm of his hand, but I didn't mind. "You don't have anything to be sorry for Dais." He paused. "But I'm sorry if I was too forward."
I placed my hand over his and held it to my cheek before kissing it. "You weren't. I'm just scared, scared of being vulnerable, scared of falling for you. Scared of giving up control."
"Hey, falling in love doesn't mean giving up control. It's not a dictatorship, it's a bond." He rubbed my cheek.
I nuzzled my head into his chest, welcoming him to hold me tight and that's what he did. He held me there all night.

"You're sure this is okay?" I asked Henry nervously.
"We've been hiding for a week now, your dad wants you to meet his family, the funfair is the perfect place. Now take this phone, my number is set into it so if we get separated and anything happens, all you have to do is call." He reassured me.
"I think I'm going to throw up." I held my stomach and leaned over trying to take a deep breath.
He rubbed my back. "You're just nervous okay, you've got this. You should put some of the ballsy Daisy that goes on missions into yourself when you're nervous." he chuckled.
"That's not a bad idea." I laughed and stood up straight. "One two, buckle my shoe, three four, knock on the door." I whispered to myself over and over again.
Henry heard, but he didn't mention it and for that I was grateful.
I knocked on the door and my dad opened it. He was standing there in a winter coat ready to go. "Hey Daisy." he beamed his smile, that I'd missed so much, at me.
"Hey Dad." I smiled back, like a child high on candyfloss.
"Dad, Dad, is it time to go?" A little chestnut haired boy ran up to him.
"It is Son," he picked him up "this is Daisy and this is Henry." my dad pointed us out to the little boy.
"This is the real Daisy? My sister?" he asked. My dad nodded at him. "Hi, I'm Jake, your brother." he beamed an identical smile to our father's.
