Chapter 17

That morning Devin found herself waking up with arms wrapped tightly around her waist. A small smile reached he lips as she realised that it wasn't just a dream, that she was with Alex and everything was okay. She heard him grumble something before rubbing his eyes, lazily laying his arm back over her before nuzzling his face into the back of her neck. Devin closed her eyes as well.

"Alex!" Devin heard Scott yell before she heard banging on his door. "She's gone! Her bed is a mess and her door was wide open." Scott continued banging before she heard him talk to someone on the other side of the door. "That's it, Alex-" Scott slammed opened the door. "Alex, do-" He paused.

She opened her eyes tiredly. Alex breathed in deeply, his arm over her waist was now up in the air as he stretched.

"What do you want, Scott?" He sighed as he relaxed again and pulled Devin closer.

"I was just checking if you knew where-" He spoke slowly. "You know what? Never mind, I can see she's here with you." Devin watched as Alex's face morphed into confusion just as he opened his eyes to look at his brother, who was looking at her. Alex glanced over at Devin and smiled.

"Good morning, princess." He smirked with a teasing tone, kissing her lips softly, she kissed back gently before a smile spread across her lips, breaking the kiss. His lips were soft and warm, gentle against her own. The memory of last night resurfacing in her mind.

Alex stayed silent, looking over her face as the curtains let in a bit of light from the moon, outlining her face. The tears rolling down her face shone against the light like stars. Alex sat up more, his eyes never leaving her face as he leaned towards her.

"Just say no if you want me to stop..." His voice was low as Devin felt his left-hand cup her face, bringing his own closer to hers.

Alex's lips touched hers, it was a feeling of a feather brushing against her skin until she leaned into him. She closed her eyes as she pressed her lips back against his. Her own hands lifted to cup his face as he moved to lay her back down against the bed, his body hovering over hers.

He kept himself from crushing her body with his body lifted, with his hands either side of her body. Devin pulled his face closer to hers making him lower himself to his elbows, a small smile etched on his face. She never expected her first kiss with Alex to be after a week of ignoring him, waking up from a nightmare and having him wake up to her staring at his chest.

In fact, Devin never expected it at all.

His lips moved against hers in sync, like a harmony. It was as if two puzzle pieces were coming together for the first time, fitting perfectly. His hair fell around her face, she let out a small laugh as the kiss broke for mere seconds before she pushed herr hands through his hair, bringing his lips back down to hers. His right hand gently placed on her left side, rubbing his thumb slowly against the skin of her hip.

He deepened the kiss, pressing his lips against hers more. Devin could hear both of their breathing deepening as they struggled for air. Neither one of them wanting to pull away first. Her fingers tugged at his hair, just wanting him to be closer to her. As of it was going to be the last time either one of them saw the other again.

Devin knew at some point she would have to pull away, but she never wanted this moment to end. She guessed that Alex felt the same as he reluctantly pulled away, resting his forehead against hers. Both of their heavy breathing filled the room.

"You know that I love you, right?" He questioned quietly. She nodded, her nose brushing against his.

"I love you too."

"I told you they were dating," Jean told Scott as she slapped his arm.

"Shut up," Scott mumbled before glancing at her.

"Why don't you ever wake up with me like that?"

"Because we sleep in different rooms on opposite sides of the school?"

"Did you find her yet?" Devin heard Raven ask as she stepped in. "'Bout damn time, Charles and Hank want to show you something...Erik not so much."

"Finally sleep with him then?" Alex laughed as he stretched once more.

"Shut up, get dressed, both of you, and meet us downstairs in Charles' office." She rolled her eyes with a shy smile before leaving.

"That's not an excuse, Scott." Jean huffed as she walked out with Scott following, trying to explain how it wouldn't be possible for him to just go to her room.

"Sorry about that, I probably should have gotten up to lock the door," Alex apologised, pushing his hair away from his face.

"It's okay." She smiled at him.

"What?" He laughed tiredly as she watched him.

"Nothing, Rapunzel, nothing." Devin shook her head before regretfully getting up to go have a shower.

"Knock on my door when you're ready to go downstairs, princess." Alex yawned before sitting up.

"Okay." She nodded before heading to the shower.

-

"What does Charles want?"

"I don't know, princess, hair?"

"Alex..."

"You asked." He held up hands up as Devin smiled with the shake of her head before Alex opened the door the Charles' office, letting her walk in first.

"What did you want to show us?" She asked wearily.

"Not what. Who." Hank smiled as stepped to the side, she saw the boy. But he was dead. The smile dropped from her face.

"How?" She looked to Charles then back to the boy, thinking it was some sick joke. "I thought you were dead?"

"I was." He nodded.

"But you were dead. I saw you die. You were on the bed for..." Hank pushed the boy forwards, lifting her hand to his chest.

"That's his heart beat," Hank explained.

"This isn't real, this is some sick joke. I'm still having another nightmare." She gripped onto her hair shaking her head.

"You've been having nightmares?" Hank asked.

"I'm real, I am here. You saved my life. What would have happened if you weren't there? Where would I be? Not here, that's for sure. But you did save my life, it just took a while to work. You saved me, that ought to count for something, right?"

"I don't understand..."

"You jump started his mutation, you took most of his pain away and when you tried to heal him as quickly as you did you jump started his mutated cells," Charles informed Devin.

"What mutation?"

Charles and Hank were in the room with the boy, going over information about a funeral, or a burial in the courtyard, somewhere other students could go and visit.

"What did you want on the gravestone?" Hank asked as he sat on one of the empty chairs.

"We don't even know his name, so I think we should-"

Charles was stopped mid-sentence when they heard metal hit against metal, they assumed it was Erik but he was out with Raven getting the shopping. Another echo caught their attention as they looked towards the boy. They had moved him to a metal table to do an autopsy later to get the bullets out.

Hank stood up and walked towards the table, he lifted part of the sheet from the boy's head to his lower abdomen and watched as his body pushed out one of the silver bullets, it rolled off his skin and dropped on the table, falling off the side. His skin sealing closed as if he wasn't injured at all.

Charles came closer and watched, noticing his skin looked less dull. Hank leaned forwards to look at the boy's chest when the boy gasped and sat up, heaving as he took in air, his eyes wide and both Charles and Hank stared at each other before looking at the boy, whose eyes rolled back as he fainted, falling back onto the table as if it never happened.

"Immortality." The boy smiled at Devin. "I knew I was different from everyone else, I just didn't know I was a mutant."

"But all that talk about meaning to die and a new life?"

"I've always thought like that, I've always felt like if I died today, I'd still live tomorrow. I guess I was right." He shrugged.

"But you're okay..."

"I'm fine." He grinned.

"We were thinking about maybe recruiting him to bring other mutants back, he can also sense mutants...Quite fascinating," Charles mentioned.

"What do you mean we, white man?" The boy turned to Charles. "You thought of it, I just wanted a milkshake." Devin looked back to Alex smiling, he stepped forwards, placing his hands on her shoulders giving them a light squeeze. "But I did agree." She looked back to him. "I don't like staying in one place for a very long time, so this gives me a reason to visit new places."

"You didn't kill him, you saved him." Hank stepped forwards. "And I'll find something for your nightmares..."

"Thank you," she told him. "And thank you for not being dead." She held her hand out to the boy who shook her hand.

"Thank you for saving my lives," he joked before nodding to Charles, he turned back to Devin with a light smile. "I hope one day you're as happy as you pretend to be," he whispered, only loud enough for her to hear, as he glanced over her shoulder to Alex then back to her before leaving the room to start one of his new lives.
