Jasper was silent.

I'd just told him how we'd left Tyler's cabin. Silence seemed like a reasonable response.

I took the flask from him and downed more.

Jasper opened his mouth but no words came out.

"Tyler and Melanie were good people." I started to say. "They shouldn't be dead."

Jasper nodded.

"Melanie was supposed to be planning her wedding with Joseph."

"What happened to... the others?" Jasper asks, quietly.

"Joseph went first, I don't think he wanted to go on anymore. He was never the same after we left. He died in the middle of a horde. We'd gotten surrounded and were running for the gaps but he just kept fighting them." I explained.

Jasper nods. "And... Graham?"

I took a deep breath. Then I took another drink from the flask. "He died saving me."

Jasper didn't say anything.

"Without hesitating, he put his life on the line for me and it got him shoved off of a cliff and into a raging river."

It was the stupidest thing he'd ever done. But it was also the bravest.

"Did you love him?" Jasper asks.

I nod solemnly.

"I hate cold sheets." I say quietly, as I move my hand to rest on Jasper's knee.

He puts his hand on mine. "Then stay with me tonight."

"I'm drunk."

"Me too."

"Then it doesn't matter."

Jasper nods as I lay my head on his shoulder. He rests his head on mine.

I close my eyes and, in my drunken state, I fall asleep there but for the first time in a long time, I'm not alone.
