Chapter 41 - Son

A woman climbs out of the driver's seat while a man gets out of the passenger seat. Both are holding rather large guns in front of their chests.

"Y'all need a ride somewhere?"

My hand relaxes over my holster. "My girl over there," I start, nodding towards Luna. "She's unconscious. Think you could give us a ride home?"

The woman nods. "Where's home?"

"3rd street southwest station."

The man raises an eyebrow at that. "Are you guys the ones who run that place?"

I tense a little, unsure of where this was going. Out of the corner of my eye, I see that Luna is starting to wake up as Fletch carefully tends to her while listening to my conversation with the strangers.

"That would be me." I tell them, being sure not to move my hand from its safe spot on my holster.

"Well, I think we can get you guys over there. But, one condition." The woman says.

I raise an eyebrow. "What would that be?"

"We've been traveling on the road for a while and our son suddenly took ill. We know you guys have meds at that place and he needs some. You give us what we need and we'll get you home." The man explains.

I relax my hand over my holster once again. I couldn't deny them that, after all, I was out here to save my own people from sickness. Especially Ahri who was about as close to a daughter as I think I'll ever be able to have. But my people needed meds and I didn't know how much we'd need. I didn't even know what their son needed to get better... Perhaps he was suffering the same flu as my people? Maybe it was something worse...

"What type of sickness does he have?"

The couple, now presumably with romantic relations to each other, both hesitate to answer. Then the woman finally speaks. "I think he has some sort of flu..."

I nod slowly. Trying to think up my next words as carefully as possible. "There's a flu going around back at our station, which is why we need to get back as quickly as possible. There's a chance your son contracted the illness locally. If it is the same flu then we have the meds to treat it."

The couple both seem to breathe a sigh of relief at my news.

"Oh thank god, our baby is gonna be okay." The man exclaims.

Fletch now approaches the situation. "He'll only be okay if we can get the meds to him in time so we need to start moving now. The dead are also getting rather close to us."

We all turn our heads to see that the dead had covered quite a bit of distance, shrinking the space between by a lot.

"Of course, everybody get in."

With that, we all hurry towards their truck and climb in. The couple sits in the front while Fletch, Luna, and I cram into the backseat. Fletch is cautiously holding Luna who's still drifting in and out of consciousness.

The woman begins driving, plowing through the herd of dead ones on the road towards the station. The truck hardly skips a beat as it runs over the dead.

"What happened to her?" The man says, making eye contact with me in the rearview mirror and nodding towards Luna.

"She took a crash landing and busted her ankle pretty bad. Her body is going through shock which is why she can't seem to hold consciousness." I explain to the man while looking at Luna.

"You a doctor or something?" He asks.

I shrug. "Or something..."

He just nods as we continue to plow through the dead until we break through the end of the herd.

"You promise to help our son?" The woman asks now making eye contact with me in the rearview mirror.

I nod quickly. "If you bring him to the station, we have a doctor who can help him. After you get us there, I can send someone out with you to bring your son back and Dr. Kings can help him there."

The couple nods. "Thank you."

I nod back.

Fletch is brushing Luna's hair out of her face while anxiously staring at her ankle. I lean over from my seat so I can see out the windshield. We approach the station and the woman parks the truck out front.

Fletch gets out, now carrying the fully unconscious Luna bridal style in his arms, he hurries into the station.

"I have to get these meds to Dr. Kings, just wait here and I'll be back soon." With that, I hurry out of the truck and through the shutters that were being lightly guarded by one of the few other permanent residents who mostly stuck to himself.

I rush to the infirmary, not stopping for anything as I carry my bag of meds over my shoulder.

Dr. Kings is anxiously waiting outside of the quarantine section he'd created.

"Oh dear god, Sasha hurry."

I throw the bag into his arms. "Save them," I order quickly.

He sighs. "There's a few who can't be saved. Ahri is still hanging on but you got here just in time. The virus is taking over very quickly. Three people succumbed about an hour ago."

"Help the rest of them and save my little girl."

He nods and hurries into quarantine with the bag of meds.

The nerves don't go away. I'm still worrying about all of my sick people. I trusted that Fletch would make sure Luna got fixed up and I knew Dr. Kings would do everything in his power to save as many people as he could, but that didn't change the fact that not everybody could make it. We'd already lost three people in a matter of a few hours.

Waiting outside quarantine for any news from Dr. Kings was not an option. I needed to puy myself to work, be useful in such distraught times.

A new task. Save the son.

I began to quickly leave the tunnels of the station, only stopping on my way out to grab a shotgun.

I left the station and got into the back of the couple's truck again.

"Let's go get your son."
