Chapter 47 - Breaking
I woke up late that night with my hand throbbing. The pain meds Dr. Kings had given me must have worn off cause my hand felt like it was pumping fire through its veins. I toss and turn for a few minutes just hoping that the pain will go away.
It doesn't.
I clench my teeth as I sit up in my cot, rubbing my good hand over my face. I was tired and felt like shit. The last thing I wanted to do was walk across the station to get more meds. But, I got up anyway and grabbed a flashlight before leaving my room.
It was quiet, the only sound being from one of the rooms where someone was snoring.
I blew out a heavy breath as I walked to the end of the hall and turned right towards the common area.
There was a light stir of noise when I walked into the common area. A few people were sitting up in their cots, staring blankly or quietly talking to each other.
They briefly glanced at me as I walked by. One person, in particular, held his gaze a little longer than the rest.
Jeremy.
As we held eye contact, he quickly got up and hurried to catch up with me as I kept walking towards the infirmary.
He doesn't say anything at first, we just walk in silence.
Then he whispers so as not to wake anyone up. "How's your hand?"
I scoff. "It hurts like hell but at least it's not infected."
He nods, looking at his feet as we walk.
Jeremy abruptly stops and grabs my wrist. I wait for him to say something but he just looks at me hesitantly. Then as I go to ask him what he's doing, he dives towards me and tackles me to the ground. The flashlight falls out of my hand and drops to the floor with a loud cracking sound. Its light flickers a few times before going out completely. I hit the ground hard and Jeremy is laying on top of me with his arms thrown over my head like he's trying to protect me.
A gunshot goes off, the loud bang ringing in my ears as it echoes through the near-empty hall.
Jeremy scrambles up quickly, he turns in the direction of the gunshot. My eyes follow his and as I squint, I can just barely make out a dark figure in the almost pitch black hall.
Jeremy charges towards the figure and they both disappear out of my sight. I grab the flashlight as I stand up, my head pounding a bit from landing so harshly on the floor.
I run after the pair, smacking the flashlight against my hand a few times and the light flickers back on.
Who the hell just shot at us? And how had Jeremy seen them in the dark behind us?
I try not to think too hard as I try to catch up with them but my hand was burning and my head was pounding.
I run to the front shutters, assuming that's where the shooter had come in from.
The shutters are ajar and the dead are about to come in through the opening.
Where the hell did Jeremy go?!
I go to reach for my knife and quickly realize that in my state of pain I'd forgotten to grab my knife or gun before leaving my room.
I look around anxiously to see our night guard unconscious with a pistol in his holster.
Of course, no knives handy and I can hardly fire a gun with my right hand.
My body jolts forward, quickly grabbing the gun and right as I turn the safety off a dead one is stumbling in and towards me.
The feeling of the gun in my right hand is strange and I fiddle with it a bit before managing to pull the trigger with my right index finger. The dead one drops to the ground but there's a few more right behind it.
I guess my aim is just as good with my right hand...
I move quickly, dragging the unconscious guard away from the opening to try and keep him safe.
Another dead one is suddenly approaching and I fire another bullet.
Or maybe I just got lucky the first time...
My second shot clips the dead one's ear but it continues moving towards me. I pull the trigger again, this time the bullet flies through the dead one's skull.
If these gunshots weren't enough to wake people up and signal that something bad was happening, I would be screwed and Jeremy probably would be too.
I still had no idea what had happened to him but I pushed that thought to the back of my head as I shot another dead one.
I struggled with aiming the gun in my right hand. It was completely different. I wanted nothing more than to have my trigger finger back.
The dead were rapidly getting closer to me and I was by myself to survive with a gun and a faulty right hand.
As I continued firing and missing, the memory of losing my finger played back in my head.
Coraline can't seem to stand still as she watches me hold her son... "Look I-" Without a second of warning, Coraline pulls a gun and raises it, firing as quickly as she can. I swing the gun in her direction and fire but it's too late for me."Oh, fuck!" I shout as I drop the gun, quickly moving my eyes to my hand. My eyes widen and I gulp as I examine my hand. "You just shot my fucking finger off!"
It's going to take a lot more than a bandage to fix the fact that my finger was on the ground and I was losing a lot of blood from my hand... His face is shocked for a second as he takes in the sight of my hand. "Damn, you really fucked her up." Doug says, glancing at Coraline before he starts to wrap the rope around my wrists.
In my haze, I'd backed myself against the wall and slid down. I was crying as I closed my eyes and dropped my gun, but I didn't realize it until arms were being wrapped around me and I was screaming. Suddenly I was defeated.
This was it, this was how I die. Wallowing in self-pity and despair was the end of me.
"Sasha!"
My name is being screamed back at me and my body is shaking.
I open my eyes, still crying and screaming. Fletch is there with his arms wrapped protectively around me. I quickly wrap my arms tightly around him, not wanting to let go of him. It's as if his body is mine, him being the only support left to me. I was shattering and with every moment he held me he was putting me together.
I bury my head into his shoulder, muffling my cries.
"Shh, shh..." He coos in my ear. "I'm here, you're okay. We're all okay..."
But I wasn't okay. I was far from okay.
I had no concept of the time that passed as Fletch held me but I continued to cry into his shoulder with my eyes closed and kept my arms clasped strongly around him.
"Sasha?"
There's a hitch in my sobs as I hear the voice calling my name.
That voice was golden and warm. Suddenly my body felt like it was on fire. I knew that voice without opening my eyes.
"Jasper." I breathe out.
