Kara stood in front of the mirror in the girl's locker room at Midvale High school. Standing only three feet away from her, was Alex Danvers, Kara's adopted sister. Alex was gossiping with her two best friends, ignorant to Kara's very presence.

But that was nothing new for Kara. She had felt like a burden to Alex since she had first been homed with the Danvers family... Back when, she had first been found by her cousin Clark Kent, also known as Superman.

Kara was an alien in every sense of the word. Alien to a sister she longed to know, alien to a family who didn't hold the same abilities as her, alien to this school... An alien to the earth. Her abilities made her feel all the more different and she could not tell a soul.  

She had no friends, to confide in and her only possible friend was her adoptive sister who wanted nothing to do with her in public. Kara was lonely to say the least.

Kara's ears perked up the moment she heard Alex's friend Amber invite Alex and Nicky out shopping after school. Kara knew that Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers would not allow Alex to go to the mall without bringing Kara along, it was their way of getting the girls to bond. A trip to the mall sounded fun but before Kara could decide just what she would buy, her hopes were cut short.

Alex sidled up close to Kara and spoke. "Hey Kara, would you mind telling mom and dad that I'm going to Amber's house to study?"

"But I thought you were going to the mall?" Kara asked, confused by the concept that Alex had just wholeheartedly agreed to the original plan.

Alex's friends laughed in the distance, forcing Alex to pull an annoyed expression and speak in an even softer tone to Kara. "That is the plan, but you know my mom and dad. They would want me to bring you with me but if it's studying... well, you and I aren't exactly in the same classes so why would we need to study together?"

"I guess that sounds logical."  

But Alex's optimism lifted up. "Besides, you and I don't exactly need to spend all our time together, do we? We're sisters, we live together."

"I guess..."

Alex's smile radiated across her entire face. "Great! I knew you would understand, we'll talk soon!"

Before Kara could respond, even with her superhuman reflexes, Alex and her friends had darted out of the girl's locker room, leaving Kara entirely alone.

Kara stared back at her reflection in the mirror and ran her hands under the cool water. She sighed, releasing a cool stream of air from her breath. Her breath froze the water running from the faucet so now the sink was filled with ice. 

She stepped back just in time for the door to open again. The iced water dropped from her hands and onto the floor.

Kara had expected to see Alex reenter the room, but instead, she found her self face to face with another girl. This new girl's face seemed to be drenched in fear. Her hair was an auburn shade, her eyes were a dark brown, and she had clearly taken to hiding in the girl's locker room.

"Are you okay?" Kara asked. But the girl brushed past her in a hurry, refusing to speak. "Can you speak?" 

"Of course, I can speak! I just don't need to talk to you!" the strange girl said, rushing into one of the cubicles and closing the door behind her.

"I'm sorry if I offended you," Kara called out over her shoulder preparing to leave the locker room as quickly as possible. 

Before Kara could bring her hand to the handle, the response of the girl forced her to stop. Sure, the strange girl didn't think Kara could hear her – but with Kara's magnified senses, it was rare for anything to get passed her.

"...A person can't just turn water into ice." The strange girl's words stunned Kara. Had the girl seen what she had just done? Kara waited silently, knowing that eavesdropping was wrong, but she needed to hear more.

The girl sobbed quietly, and Kara made her way to the closed cubicle, listening intently.

"I'm a freak," the strange girl said, unaware that Kara could hear her. "I'm a goddam ice queen!"
