Chapter 4

As Kara sat at her desk, listening to the teacher's lecture on mathematics, she couldn't help but drone out Miss Carter's voice listening for more exciting conversations. She already knew the mathematic formulas, so it wasn't like she was missing out on much. Nonetheless, her mind was on Crystal's whereabouts.

Where had she gone? Why was her skin freezing up the way it was? Something was just not right about her.

Then, just as she thought those thoughts, she could hear Crystal's panicked voice from a far distance. "Oh, god... what did I just do? Oh no, oh no! Oh god!" The voice seemed to be coming from an entirely separate room in the school, but to Kara, it felt as if it was right next to her.

Automatically, Kara stood up from her chair, interrupting the teacher's mathematical explanation. "Miss Danvers? is everything alright?" Miss Carter asked.

Kara's eyes drifted from the door and back to the teacher. The rest of the students were watching her with an intensity that she had grown quite used to over the past few weeks. It came with being the new kid.

Regardless, Kara needed an excuse to leave immediately. "Miss Carter? Can I go to the bathroom? I'm not feeling well."

Miss Carter glanced at a few other students and then back at Kara. "Sure. But be quick. These answers will be in next week's test."

Kara hurried toward the door calling out over her shoulder. "I'll study up, tonight." Before the teacher could respond, Kara had closed the door behind her and was already running down the hallway.

She listened out for Crystal's voice once more, only this time she could only hear a soft frightened sob. The crying was coming from a nearby classroom. The door was shut.

Kara peered through the glass of the door, where she saw Crystal standing stiff. Her eyes were wide open, and she was staring down at something on the ground beside the teacher's desk. Kara focused her sense of sight and gasped, backing away from the door immediately and bumping into a passerby.

"I'm... I'm sorry," Kara mumbled as she retook her balance to see just who the person was... Alex.

"Kara, are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Kara pursed her lips together, not sure what to tell her adopted sister exactly. Before she could answer, the door to the classroom opened and Crystal was standing in the doorway.

"Kara was just waiting for me, weren't you?" Crystal asked casually. Her skin was no longer blue, in fact, the warmth had certainly returned right back to her skin.

Kara glanced from Alex to Crystal, unsure about what to say to break out of the predicament that she was in. But, she needed to find out more without endangering Alex's life.

"I'm fine," Kara nodded at Alex. "I was just looking for Crystal."

Alex offered Kara a smile and a nod and then continued on down the corridor. Kara turned back to Crystal. "Who is that in there?"

"Who is who?" Crystal asked dumbly.

Kara pointed towards the door. "I know what I saw... and I think you need help."

Crystal shook her head dismissively. "I don't need help, I'm fine. Let's get out of here." Crystal tried to take hold of Kara's arm, but Kara shook her away.

Crystal's was relatively strong for a small statured girl, but right now Kara had other concerns. She stormed into the classroom as fast as she could with Crystal trailing behind her.

Kara looked down at the frozen body of a student which lay on the floor behind the desk in horror. She focused her hearing on his breathing, which was faint, but still present.

"We can fix this," Kara said.

"I thought I could," Crystal said as she closed and locked the door. "But you just couldn't leave it well enough alone, could you, Kara?"

Kara eyed Crystal in panic. "I don't understand."

"I was cold and he warmed me up... But now you've caught me... So now you're going to have to die too."
