"Fuck it stopped moving," Harry cursed, walking towards the doors. He ran his fingers through his curls before clenching one of them and slamming it against the closed doors when I spoke.
"No shit Sherlock," I scoffed, looking away from the nasty glare I was getting from him.
"Shut the fuck up before I shove my fist in that big mouth of yours," he threatened, point his finger at me while gazing at me angrily. I just rolled my eyes at him in response while he continued to examine the doors.
"What are you doing now?" I sighed, sitting on the floor as he started to study every part of the elevator.
"Trying to figure out a way for me to escape," he replied, staring up at the roof of the elevator.
"Me? Don't you mean us," I arched an eyebrow at him.
"No I mean me," he smirked while I flipped him off, making him scowl immediately. "Bitch."
"Prick." After that I stayed silent and watched him carefully inspect the elevator. It seemed like all hope was lost when he started to kick the doors with frustration cursing loudly. "You know, kicking the doors isn't going to make it move idiot," I spoke loudly over his string of curses.
"And do you have a plan to get us out of here?" he cocked an eyebrow at me. I just bit my lower lip and looked away. "Thought so," he muttered under his breath. "Stop trying to be a smartass all the time. You're just an ass," he added with that damn smirk of his.
"What is your freaking problem?" I snapped at him while he stared at me with slight confusion. "Seriously!? What have I ever done to you? Why are you such a dick?!" I started to yell at him as he came to sit down next to me. His action quieted me for a second, catching me off-guard, making me frown at him a little.
"Don't take what to do or say to you so seriously Scarlett. I'm like this to everyone. But for you, I go out of my way to annoy you and be rude to you," he said, smiling mockingly, as I rolled my eyes for what seemed like the hundredth time today.
"That doesn't answer my question," I sighed. "I thought it was something to do with my Dad," I mumbled, running a hand through my tangled hair.
"It is!" he said, nodding at me while I nodded for him to continue. "Kinda, like its mainly because I don't like you, but I mean I feel kind of annoyed your Dad didn't tell me about you, we were so close and all that. I wouldn't have told anybody. People kept asking me, did you know about her or has he ever talked to you about her but he never did mention you, not one bit," he explained to me while I listened.
"Oh," was all I said, with a bit of hurt laced into my voice. If my Dad trusted Harry a lot and told him everything, why didn't he ever mention me? Was he ashamed that he had a daughter who wasn't some tough strong assassin?
"You shouldn't feel hurt by that Scarlett," Harry spoke quietly to me, almost gently, which surprised me a little.
"He did the right thing y'know? Not telling me about you. When you're an assassin you can't have family, that's a weak spot whereas for your enemies that's an advantage for them. Y'know what I mean?" he asked and I nodded, fully understanding now. The more I thought about my father the more sad I felt, and then I felt the tears escape a little, as usual. "Fuck, don't cry," he groaned, as I turned my face away and brought my knees up to my chest.
"I-I can't help it," I sniffled. "I miss him so much Harry," I whispered, wiping my cheeks. The person I really wanted to be with right now was Spencer; only he could provide me with the comfort and care I so really needed. I unconsciously leaned my head against Harry's shoulder, feeling his body tense up under my head.
"Scarlett what are you doing?" he asked me while I sniffled quietly. "Get off," he sighed, clearly not comfortable with this.
"Please," I begged, pouting a little. No matter who it was, I always liked having company with me. I was terrified by the thought of being alone. I guess I was entirely alone right now because I had Harry, he knew my Dad I could consider him as some sort of...friend? Okay maybe not friend, but someone who I can trust. Harry just sighed in response and sat quietly as I leaned against him.
"Do you miss him?" I asked curiously.
"Yeah," he breathed.
"How did you react when you found out?" I continued to slowly asked questions. Sullivan told me to talk to him about my Dad and that was what I was exactly doing right now.
"I was the one who found the body," he said while a small gasp left my lips.
"That's horrible."
"Yeah," he pursed his lips, looking down at his lap. "It sucked a lot," he added.
"Did you cry?"
"I don't cry Scarlett," he chuckled while I frowned. "I'm not weak like you," he said. I felt my hand twitch by my side, wanting to punch his pretty face out of irritation.
"Then how did you react?"
"I was shocked at first, but I kind of expected it. Your dad killed a lot of people Scarlett, and not in a pretty away. He's bound to have some enemies. He was ruthless, when someone asks him to torture someone, he turns into his merciless monster," he said, as I felt my heart break a little. I felt like I was somewhat betrayed; my sweet loving father is supposedly this barbaric killer?
"What's wrong now?" he asked with a sigh of annoyance, noticing the grimace on my face.
"Because I feel betrayed! Why didn't my Dad ever tell me about this?" I asked myself rather than him.
"Because he's selfish. He obviously knew you wouldn't take it well if he told he was an assassin. He probably didn't want to ruin whatever you two had, your father-daughter bond," he said as my averted to his chest noticing the dark t-shirt, which had mysteriously appeared on him after I left him in the kitchen.
"I wouldn't have been that mad. I mean; I love him. He's the only family I've got left," I said before I paused for a second. "The only family I had left," I corrected myself, my voice breaking a little. "C-Can you...can you put your arm around me?" I asked in a small timid voice. I felt like I was 7 years old again, when I still had awful nightmares about clowns and when my Dad was there to hold me as comfort. Right now I needed someone to hold me, and I don't care if it had to be Harry.
"What? No," he scoffed, shuffling a bit.
"Please?" I pouted childishly, inching closer to him. He frowned tightly at me, shaking his head and averting his gaze to the elevator doors.
I sighed sadly in acceptance, chewing on my lower lip as I pondered quietly. After a few seconds, I felt him move his tattooed arm over my shoulder, gently hauling me to his side. Despite his cold nature, his body felt warm and inviting. This slightly reminded me of Spencer, like when he'd always soothe me by holding me or making me cupcakes. Yes Spencer loved to bake, and his chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting were heavenly.
"Harry?"
"What?"
"Was my father cruel to you? Like while training you and all that?" I inquire as he stretched his legs out in front of him, his hand curling around my shoulder.
"He was strict when he first started training me. He'd insult me a couple of times and beat me up too, but that was only to toughen me up," he told me while I listened attentively. My father beat him up? How old was he when that happened? Instead of asking I just kept silent and continued to listen.
"But other than that, he cared about me like no other. I felt like he was a father to me. He was willing to risk his life for me, which now I think is quite stupid knowing that he has a daughter about my age," he said, furrowing his dark brows.
"Well then that means he loved you like he loves me. You must've been like a son to him," I murmured quietly.
Harry didn't say anything after that; we just sat in silence waiting for the damn elevator to start moving again. Harry said this whole elevator breaking down thing happened a week ago to Jade and Blaze, he said it should start working again in a couple of hours.
"You know, you actually remind me a lot of him," Harry spoke, making my ears perk up.
"Really?" I asked with a small smile.
"Yeah. He was pretty smart just like you. I think you're smarter though," he said while my heart lifted at his words.
"You think I'm smart?" I smirked at him while he rolled his eyes at me.
"You're a nerd. You're like a walking Chemistry textbook," he chuckled, it was my turn to roll my eyes at him. Seriously I should get a medal for the best eye-roller in the world.
"My Dad didn't know shit about Chemistry," I said while he laughed lightly, agreeing with me.
"Yeah but he was smart as in he had common sense. When people can't figure out something he'd look at it in a different angle and figure it out in an instant. He's not book smart but he was intelligent. Most people here think it's all about having the fighting skill; brawn, they don't understand that to be an assassin you need brain too," he explained as I nodded.
"But I'm book smart," I frowned.
"No you're both. Yes you are book smart I can't disagree on that but you've also got common sense."
"But how do you know that? What have I done to make you think I've actually got common sense?"
"Your fight at Dragon's Cave," he answered simply, while I stared up at him in confusion. "You didn't know shit about fighting and honestly your punches sucked, but you did a lot of what your father used to do when he boxed; counter attack," he explained, I nodded slightly with a frown on my face. I still didn't quite understand what he was implying.
"I don't get what I did so great in that match. My punching sucked as you said so yourself," I said while he shook his head.
"Yes it did suck, but you counter attacked pretty well for someone who doesn't know shit about boxing. You even counter-punched. Counter-punching is one of the hardest and most important skill to learn in boxing because the best time to hit your opponent is when he's throwing a punch at you," he told me, his arm sliding off my shoulder to land on my hip. I tried to pay no attention to his sudden action; instead I listened to what he was saying.
"Now what your Dad would usually do is counter-attack a lot. He had these extremely powerful punches; it was wicked! One punch and his opponent would be knocked out. Since he had rock hard jabs, he'd always counter-attack to tire the opponent out so he could just go ahead and beat the shit out of him or her later."
"Wait so what you're trying to say is that because I counter-attacked in that match, that makes me exactly like my father?"
"No well yes. Not entirely. Everyone should counter-punch in boxing. Your Dad was just a master of the skill; he was gifted with it. It's just when you were fighting I noticed that you counter-attacked just like him, in a way you have his fighting style. You used duck counters, slip counters, pull counters, do you even know what those are?"
"No," I scoff. "I just used my head for that match. I figured if she throws a punch at me I can always duck and strike her unexpectedly," I shrugged.
"See! You don't know anything about counter-punches, yet you just used your brain to figure out a way to conserve energy and catch your opponent off-guard," he said.
"Yeah so I have a better chance at winning; plus I guess it makes your opponent reluctant to throw a punch," I added as he gazed down at me with a...smile? Was he smiling at me? I couldn't tell if it was fake or genuine. He had a gorgeous smile, even though he wasn't showing his teeth or I couldn't see all his dimples, his smile was gorgeous.
"What you just said there shows how smart you are Scarlett. We literally have to explain to people why counter-punching is helpful and important. You just figured it out on your own without anyone telling you," he told me as I grinned at him, instantly feeling better. "Stop smiling so much it's creeping me out," he scrunched his nose up while I let out a laugh.
"Why? Do you prefer seeing me cry?"
"I prefer not seeing you at all," he chuckled while I scowled at him.
"Hmm yeah whatever," I hummed in reply as I stared down at my lap. A large tattoo on Harry's left hand caught my eye and I slowly reached out to grab his hand. I felt his body tense up again as I pulled his arm over his lap to gaze at the large tattoo.
"What are you doing?" he asked me as quietly studied the tattoo. It was of a crow perched on a skull. I had noticed almost everyone had this tattoo, big versions, and small versions. It didn't really matter. Everybody had it.
"Why does everybody have this tattoo?" I asked him, curiosity filling my tone.
"It's the symbol of The Organization," he replied as I slowly traced it with my index finger, knowing he was weirdly comfortable with that.
"What does it mean?" I asked, studying the dark crow with interest.
"Death," he responded. "Both things represent death," he told me.
"Will I have to get one soon?"
"Yes, you get it once you're trained. All initiates complete a course and have a sort of graduation ceremony indicating that they are now trained assassins. The day after the ceremony you get the tattoo to make it official," he explained.
"How long is this course?"
"A year of intense training," he replied. I don't think a year of intense training will work for me. I might take too long to finish whatever this course is.
"Is that usually enough to be a qualified trained assassin?" I inquired, furrowing my brows slightly.
"Well yeah like I said it's intense training, like really intense training. People die from it sometimes because it's too much," he said while my jaw slackened.
"Seriously?"
"Yeah. I guess that's what you've signed up for if you want to be an assassin. After you're officially an assassin, you still have more training to do anyways. We are after all trying to make the best assassins we can possibly make," he told me, picking at the lose strings from the corners of his shorts.
"What happens if people don't complete the course on time?"
"We kill them," he replied causally as my jaw dropped.
"Wait what?" I asked, completely flabbergasted. "Why do you have to kill them? Can't they spend a couple more months completing it? After al-" I started to babble away before he cut me off, bringing his hand up to cover my mouth.
"You ask way too many questions Scarlett," he groaned as if my questions were giving him a nasty headache.
"Well excuse me for being curious," I shot, hoping he heard it despite my words being muffled by his large bandaged hand.
"Your curiosity is gonna get you killed one day," he muttered while I removed his hand from my face.
"Who cares?" I exclaimed. No seriously, who the hell would actually care? Spencer isn't here he probably thinks I'm dead in a ditch or something. Harry just kept quiet, not really answering my question.
"I guess nobody right now, but maybe your friends. If you make any," he snickered. "You must bore people to death with your Chemistry shit," he sneered as I frowned at his words.
"Fucking dick."
"Stop being so sensitive. We have plenty of geeks here you can be friends with," he reassured me, rubbing my shoulder in a comforting way. My lips parted in slight confusion at the action. This is so weird. He is acting so weird. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes back to being the rude asshole again. He's bipolar like that.
"Like who?" I scoffed, folding my arms over my chest.
"Liam," he replied. "He and his lab rats will be the perfect group for you to be friends with," he chuckled, ruffling my hair. "Why are you still upset?" he asked, pulling his brows low.
"You're still a dick."
"God Scarlett Just chill, not everyone's gonna be nice to you," he scowled at me, as I shot him an annoyed glare and shoved his arm off me. "Why are you being so emotional? Are you on your period or something?" he chuckled.
"I won't be the only one bleeding if you ask me that again?" I glared at him, my cheeks flushing brightly.
"I actually think it's really cute that you think you can actually fight me," he laughed, pretending to wipe fake tears from the corners of his eyes. "You're seriously bipolar as fuck," he continued to laugh.
"I'm bipolar? That's a disorder Harry, not an adjective," I frowned at him. "Also, says the one who can't keep the lid on his temper for more than five minutes," I scoffed, standing up now.
"Look if it makes you feel better, as soon as we get out of this lift I'll take you with me down to the labs to see Liam. He's invented some stuff he wanted to show me, I don't think he'd mind showing you whatever it is he's so keen on showing me," he said, scratching the back of his head.
"Really?" I frowned at him skeptically. He nodded in response, his words completely genuine. "Thank...you?" I didn't really wanna go anywhere with Harry, but I did want to see the labs.
"Yeah, that's only if we get out of here," he said, glancing at the closed elevator doors with a scowl. "Until then, we're stuck here," he grumbled, folding his arms and leaning against the wall. I nodded, leaning against the other wall of the elevator, opposite him as I stared down at the floor. Suddenly something popped up in my head that I needed to ask Harry about.
"Harry?" I spoke up, raising my gaze. He did the same, locking his intense green eyes with mine. He raised his eyebrows at me expectantly while I chewed on my lower lip, trying to form the correct words to say to him.
"Do you know who Andrei is?" I asked him, pursing my lips. His face showed no expression whatsoever, much to my displeasure.
"No," he answered firmly.
"You're lying," I stated. I had a feeling that he was lying. When I woke up from my nightmare in the hospital wing, when I said the name 'Andrei' I caught a hit of recognition in Harry's features.
"How do you know?" he asked me. Normally I would've said he averted his gaze from mine or something like that, indicating that he was lying, but he didn't. He looked me straight in the eye and said no.
"Exactly. You don't," he muttered when I hadn't said anything. "Don't you think it'd be a bit weird to see your father's murderer in your nightmares?"
"Not unless I've actually met him before," I mumbled.
"Well have you?" he inquired and I shook my head. I have never met Andrei before as far as I could remember.
"Well that doesn't matter anyways. The point is we need to find the killer and-"
"And what Scarlett?" he snapped. "Kill him? Torture him? Throw him in a cell to rot for eternity? What good will that do?" he scoffed.
"He could be going around killing other innocent people! We need to stop him!" I responded, waving my arms in the air dramatically while Harry sighed harshly. I was rendered speechless when he started taking large steps towards me before my back was up against the wall and he was towering over my, peering at me with a wicked smirk.
"You see Scarlett, The Organization doesn't care about the innocent getting killed. All we care about is the money. The money we get from clients when we go do their dirty work for them. We don't have time to waste on running after a murderer, the only time we'll care is when we're getting paid to do it," he told me, his voice deadly calm and firm. My face morphed into an expression of disgust before it disappeared completely as I tried to keep my cool.
"I still need to know Harry. I still need to know who did it and why that person did it," I mumbled, staring up at him while he looked down on me.
"You're on your own for that Scarlett. Nobody here would be bothered to give a shit about the person who killed your father, not even me," he said in his low voice, which had me mesmerized for a second. I snapped out of my daze when the loud screeching of metal returned, a sign that the elevator might start working again.
Harry quickly moved away from me, his eyes darting to all corners of the elevator. Instantaneously, the elevator started moving again and I exhaled in relief.
"I thought we'd be stuck here forever," I chuckled in a joking manner, nudging Harry's elbow who looked down at me with a scowl.
"Yeah I would've lost my mind with you in here," he retorted. Now it was my turn to scowl.
All of a sudden the doors flew open with a 'ding', revealing the other side where Damien and a couple of other people were standing.
"How long have we been in here?" Harry asked Damien, who glanced at his wristwatch, while furrowing his brows.
"About an hour or so," he shrugged, glancing at me once I stepped out of the elevator and everyone else piled. "It's lunchtime now," he told Harry before he joined the others in the elevator, and the door slid shut. "Let's have lunch first then we'll go see Liam," Harry said to me as we walked out of the apartment building.
I was somewhat happy he still didn't change his mind about letting me come with to see Liam, considering the fact I was sort of annoying him a couple of minutes ago. I was brought out of my thoughts when Harry muttered something to me that made my scowl a little.
"Don't tell anyone about what happened in the elevator," he said lowly to me, his eyes gazing hardly at me for an answer. I just nodded, swallowing thickly.
"Good girl."
I wasn't really going to tell anyone about what happened but why didn't he want me to tell anybody anyways? Was he embarrassed of opening up to me? Was he embarrassed about the fact that he actually talked to me in general? All these questions bombarded my brain as we made our way to the warehouse.
