Chapter Ten: Welcome

The Mountain was quite an impressive sight but Dick wished that Selina could be there to see it. It was move-in day for him and she wasn't allowed to tag along for obvious reasons. She was a criminal and the other heroes would lose it if they found her lurking around. He would've liked to show her this place. He tried to think of this experience as like anyone else moving to college but it was hard to frame it like that when his guardian couldn't see him again for fear of ruining her reputation. She did, however, smother him in kisses when he and Bruce packed up all his things.

Selina gave Dick one more kiss before watching him get into the car. He flashed her a smile before busying himself with talking to Alfred. She supposed he didn't want to focus on her standing there knowing they wouldn't see each other for a long time. She grabbed Bruce before he could get in the car and he closed the door, sensing that she didn't want Dick to hear what she had to say. "I want updates Bruce," she ordered sternly. "I want to know how my kitten does. Photos and videos." She could never cut the boy off completely. He may as well have been her own flesh and blood and, even though he wasn't, she wanted to make sure he would be okay. This choice was difficult for the pair of them to accept but they knew that was the right one. She'd always thought he was too nice for their line of business. Sure he was mischievous and if you crossed him, you'd have hell to pay yet when she imagined his future, she always struggled to see him as an imitation of herself. It never felt right. "I will," Bruce assured her. "I'll make sure to send them discreetly to keep the pair of you separate." She cringed at that word. Separate.

"He knows the basics of fighting. I taught him how to use his whip and his hand to hand combat is fine."

"I know, I've seen him in action." No, he didn't know, she thought. Bruce didn't know anything about her little boy that's why she had to tell him. He had to know what a wonderful person was joining him. She remembered when they debated about where he'd live. She'd suggested he stay in Gotham, stay with Bruce so she could pop by but he refused. He argued that the press would put too much pressure on Dick if they caught wind of him staying there. Not to mention that he'd never raised a kid before no less a teenager which was notoriously difficult to parent. He suggested that Dick stayed with the other teens in the Mountain where they'd be watched over by Black Canary. She didn't mind Black Canary. Of course, she was no replacement for her as a maternal figure but she was a good stand-in. They settled on the Mountain and she supposed it was good for keeping them apart. "Make sure you give him big meals, he tends to forget to eat and his metabolism is fast. Oh, and his nightmares make it hard to sleep through the night so make sure he naps during the day."

"You've told me all this before. He'll be fine."

"Promise me he will be. He's been through enough."

"I promise Selina."

Bruce helped him move his boxes into one of the empty rooms and they slowly began filling it with his things. There was a single bed, a dresser, a closet and then a desk with an office chair. He didn't want to show how excited he was to have a simple office chair but come on. A spinny chair? That was hours of fun right there. He didn't have a lot of things and most of what they'd brought were for his less than legal lifestyle. Bruce frowned as they started to unpack, finding that there weren't nearly enough clothes. "I thought Selina stole things for a living, how can you have so little clothes?" he muttered to himself. He forgot that Dick had very good hearing. Those damn cat ears tended to pick up his mutterings.

"I don't need a lot. I've always been used to having enough to get by," the younger replied. "Not all of us can be rich B."

"No, but you only have four shirts."

"I'll go get some if you're gonna throw a paddy over it."

"No, no. I just-" His response stopped there and Dick let out a sigh. He seemed to understand that there'd been some kindness meant in the statement though it had been buried in a level of misunderstanding.

"My uh, my parents taught me to not have a lot of stuff. We moved around a lot so having loads of clothes didn't make much sense. I still don't like to have tonnes of things," he explained. It came out somewhat disjointed and awkward but that wasn't too unusual when it came to talking about his parents. He never knew how to speak about them. There was a lot of love for them but every memory had the sad film covering it, sending him through a speedrun of the stages of grief. Bruce understood it, he knew he did. They were both orphans at a young age and witnessed things no kid should ever witness. It was weird. Maybe in another life, Dick would start with Bruce since he'd been at the circus that night. Maybe he would've been his sidekick. The thought was laughable. What would he be called? Batboy? "Just don't go without," Bruce stated. He nodded with a small smile. Who would've thought Bruce of all people would be looking out for him? "I've been meaning to ask, did you want everyone to know your real name?" Dick thought for a moment. Up until now, the only heroes that knew his true name were Bruce, Wally and Roy. The boys may have blabbed to their mentors so he may have to lump in Oliver, Dinah and Barry. Was he okay with that? Yes. He liked them, they knew his deal and he trusted them. He didn't trust everyone else yet. They probably didn't trust him either. It didn't feel right to have people he didn't know on the same level know his name. It was an invitation to know his history and he didn't want that. "No. I want to know them first."

"Good choice."

"Do...do you trust me? To do the right thing here?" Bruce turned to him and there was a surprisingly soft expression on his face.

"I don't trust people, Dick. In all honesty, there's only one person I completely trust." He hummed and looked away. "But I have faith in you. That's different, I know it is but it's the most I can offer you." He smiled at the older.

"I'll be glad to take it." They returned to unpacking in comfortable silence. "Should I use something to hide my identity?"

"Perhaps." The billionaire glanced around the room then shoved his hand into his pocket. He hit the sunglasses there and got an idea. He pulled them out and handed them over to the younger. Although the frames were a tad too big, they did a good job of covering his eyes. "How's that?"

"You're lucky I've got good sight." He blinked a few times as his eyes adjusted to the new black tint over the world. "They'll do for now but I think I'll have to make some improvements."

"I don't doubt you will."

Upon finishing unpacking, Bruce brought Dick to meet the matron and patron of the Mountain. One was Red Tornado who fascinated the Neko the very moment he greeted him and the other was Black Canary who he'd previously met when out with Roy. She informed him to call her Black Canary when they were in a hero setting but Dinah when they were off duty. It made sense to him. Red Tornado was just Red Tornado in every setting which was easy to remember. "You'll be training frequently and adapting knowledge you have to the hero world. You're definitely the most experienced on the team so I'm hoping I can call on you during the group sessions," she explained.

"I'm down for that. Just go easy on me, I think SB bruised something that definitely shouldn't be bruised," he replied, half-joking. He'd been sleeping funny ever since CADMUS. "Or maybe it was the collapsing building?"

"Did you not get a scan?" Black Canary asked. He frowned at her as though she'd ask the dumbest thing in the world. Well, she had. Who just had an X-Ray machine laying around? Hell, who had the money to go get one? He could after stealing things but then he'd have to make time for it and it would be a whole thing. "Have you ever had a scan?" He shook his head. "Have you ever had a check-up?"

"You're asking a lot of personal questions here," he commented.

"Heroes can't help anyone if they're not in good condition. You could have an underlying problem that we don't know about. Bruce, I thought you said he'd been well looked after." Dick's tail thrashed and his ears turned down at that last sentence. He went to defend his guardian but she sensed she'd chosen the wrong words and quickly corrected herself. "I meant medically. It's unusual for a boy your age to have not seen a doctor."

"We usually just patch ourselves up like that time I was stabbed. Or that time I dislocated my shoulder. Or that time I was thrown out that window." The humans of the group grew increasingly worried at the shortlist and jumped in before it could grow any longer.

"Okay, so we're going to make sure you get a check-up before you go on a mission."

"Then make sure he pays for it. I don't have health insurance...or a social security number." There was silence for a moment.

"You don't have a social security number?" Bruce asked.

"Well, I might do but the people who have it are God knows where and they might not even have my papers anymore." The older made a mental note to get that sorted.

"I have a friend that'll help. I'll have him looked over." He'd book that later. "He's going by Kitten still and his identity will be hidden from the team for personal reasons. I don't want him to be judged by doing so."

"He won't be, trust me. We best get him settled before Superboy and Aqualad come in. I've heard there'll be another member coming but I can't be sure."

They talked over ground rules, basic etiquette, the training schedule and everything else Dick needed to know. He took it all in before asking to go to his room to do some redecorating. They allowed him to leave and he kept the act together until he was safely behind his bedroom door. Dick put his body against the door and slowly sat with his back against it. He looked around the new room. It wasn't half as cosy as his other one. It had cold grey walls, no windows, and plain cold floors. Everything was plain in here. There was no homely feeling. It was cold. What had he done? He'd pursued being a hero. Why? Because he wanted to help people. Then why is it so lonely? He petted his tail to calm himself down and reasoned that it only felt lonely because there weren't other people here yet. He'd feel better later, right? He'd have fun then. He'd be okay then. It'd feel like home then. Hopefully. Red Tornado would be cool to get to know. He was a literal robot and tech had always been a big interest of his. Black Canary was a badass and had similar vibes to Selina. His teammates would be cool to work with. He'd have fun going on cool missions where he saw places he'd never been able to before. This would be a good time in the future. For now, he'd have to get used to the cold.
