Compatible
This idea is mine! I own this au! Holy goodness and all that it is!
Lance was not looking forward to later that day. I mean, there's a very low chance he and Keith are even compatible.
You see, the way people know who they're going to spend the rest of their lives is completely random. The higher ones choose two random names and bring the two to a 'love chamber'. Lance hates the name. It makes it seem like something dirty is going to go on down there. That is definitely not the case. Well, nothing sexual dirty anyway. What they're actually doing? Could be considered dirty.
The two names that have been drawn are to meet at the higher one's fortress and are escorted to the love chamber. Once there, the nurses hook up person A and B to a strange machine. Once they're connected... well, nobody really knows for sure. All people knew, was that once you woke up, the nurses would tell you if you're compatible or not. If you are, you have to spend the rest of your lives together. There was no other option. Nobody has ever found someone one-hundred percent compatible. If it's at least eighty-one percent or more, that's considered compatible.
And with Lance's luck, he just had to be tested to see if he and his rival, his enemy, his least favorite person and him are compatible or not.
Of course, Lance highly doubted it. The two of them never got along, and Lance doesn't intend to now.
He dragged himself to the front entrance where Keith was sulking. They didn't acknowledge each other's presence. They sat in silence and apart from each other.
A young man with black hair with a white streak opened up the gate for them. Keith and Lance sighed while they stood up.
The man smiled.
"My name is Shiro. Are you Keith and Lance?" The man, Shiro, asked.
"Unfortunately." Keith and Lance said at the same time. Shiro looked between the two before clearing his throat.
"This way, please." He said as he ushered them in. Keith and Lance walked side by side, not making eye-contact.
"For hundreds of years, we have been matching people together in a peaceful way! We take extra care of our patients and make sure that each one is cared for. Do either of you happen to have any questions?" Shiro asked.
"Actually, I do. Why can't we find love on our own?" Lance asked.
"I'm glad you asked. You see, for thousands of years, many people were in relationships that just weren't right. They created kids that messed up society, example, Hitler and Donald Trump." Shiro explained. Lance nodded his head.
"Seven-hundred years ago, president Alfor came up with a system. A system that quickly changed the way people fell in love." Shiro said. Keith scoffed.
"But is it really love if it's forced?" He asked. Shiro didn't say anything.
"No more questions." He said. He leads them down into a dark red basement.
"Keith, please lay here, Lance you here," Shiro said as he pointed to two separate hospital beds. They did as they were told.
"Take off your shirts, so we can apply the equipment," Shiro demanded. The boys blushed but did as they were told.
A nurse wearing green stuck a needle into both of their arms. Lance instantly felt lightheaded.
"Just try to relax. It'll be over soon, anyway." She said.
Lance drifted into oblivion.
Black.
All he could see was Black. Black everywhere.
Red.
He saw something red. Something new yet so familiar. He ran towards it, hoping to be taken away from the darkness. He touched it and instantly, the scene changed. Suddenly, he was standing in a garden with his hand on Keith's shoulder.
"Where are we?" Lance asked. Keith just stared in disbelief.
"Keith?" Lance asked. Lance was going to ask what was wrong when he heard a little boy's giggle.
He looked to his left to see a young boy, maybe five, run past them, giggling. He had black wavy hair and purple eyes. He kind of looked like a young Keith.
Soon, a woman older than Lance and Keith, walked out from behind the door, smiling softly at the little boy.
"Mom..." Keith whispered. Lance looked at the little boy and back at Keith. Yes, that was definitely young Keith. Lance looked at Keith's mother and saw that behind her was another kid. A young girl the same age as little Keith.
"Who's that?" Lance asked, pointing to her.
"That's... my twin sister, Acxa," Keith said. Lance tilted his head.
"I didn't know you had a sister. Much less a twin." He mumbled.
Little Keith ran back to his mom and grabbed Acxa's hand.
"Look at what I found! It'th pretty cool!" He yelled. Lance chuckled.
"You had a lisp?" He asked. Keith blushed.
"Shut up," Keith mumbled.
Little Keith ran past them with his hand in Acxa's. Lance watched in wonder as little Keith was showing a snail to Acxa.
Suddenly, the scene changed.
Keith and Acxa (who now had purple hair), were standing next to a bed.
"Mom... please, stay with us! You can do this, I know you can. You... you have to..." Young Keith said as he held his mom's hand. Young Keith looked to be about thirteen.
His mom smiled.
"Keith, I want you to take care of your sister when I'm not here." She whispered. She looked thinner than before, bags under her eyes, she looked so... frail.
"No. Don't say that. Don't you ever say that to me again, mom. You're going to make it. You're the strongest person that I know." Young Keith said.
"Mom, please. You have to stay. We're too young to be on our own!" Acxa said.
Lance looked over at Keith and saw that he was crying. Lance was crying too. He couldn't even imagine...
The scene changed and it was what Lance was afraid was going to happen.
Keith and Acxa stood over a grave, flowers in their hands.
The scene changed again and this time, Keith was older. He looked angry.
"Acxa, you can't just leave!" He yelled. Acxa rolled her eyes.
"You can't tell me what to do! This is for my own good! I'm looking after myself, god knows you don't know how to do that!" She yelled back.
"This isn't what mom would've want-"
"Mom is dead! Keith, mom is dead! She wanted us to survive and all you've been doing is hiding! You're a coward!" She yelled.
"I was protecting us!" Keith protested.
"No, you were protecting you. And dragging me along. I'm tired of this, Keith. I'm leaving and that's final." She said. Without another word, she walked out the door, slamming it behind her.
"She never did come back," Keith said to Lance. Lance no longer had his hand on Keith's shoulder but was now holding Keith's hand.
"I... never knew. I'm so sorry, Keith." Lance said. Keith wiped his eyes.
"I buried my past from anyone for the longest time. I was starting to forget it myself." Keith admitted.
"After Acxa left, I threw myself into work. I trained every minute of every day. I wanted to get stronger. Never did me any good." Keith said.
"Keith, if I had known, I wouldn't have been so hard on you. I'm really sorry." Lance said. Keith looked Lance in the eyes, searching for any sign that he was lying.
"I'm... sorry too. I acted like a complete bitch to you." Keith said after some time.
The scene changed and Lance gasped.
"This was my childhood home!" He exclaimed. Lance frowned suddenly.
"Wait... if this is my past, then that means... well, shit." He said. Keith raised an eyebrow.
"What is it?" He asked.
Before Lance could answer, a little girl walked in with her hair in a ponytail. She had tan skin and dark brown hair. She looked so sad.
"Lana! We're going to the park, do you want to come?" A voice called out.
"No thank you, mama! I'm good here." The little girl, Lana, yelled back.
"Who's that little girl?" Keith asked. Lance looked like someone had stabbed him.
"That's... that's me." He admitted. Keith looked confused.
"What do you mean?" He asked. Lance sighed.
"I'm trans, dude. But the time this is taking place? I didn't know what I was. I still went by 'Lana'," Lance said, his face very red.
The scene changed.
Lana, now a few years older, stood in front of a mirror, frowning. She sighed deeply. She ran across her room and grabbed a pair of scissors. She ran back to the mirror and started cutting her hair.
"This was when I realized I was not a girl, but rather a boy," Lance explained to Keith. Keith nodded his head.
The scene changed.
"Mom... I want to talk about something important..." Lance said. His mom sighed.
"Is it about why you cut your hair? Do you feel like you're not getting enough attention?" She asked. Lance shook his head.
"No, I actually wanted to ask you... Can, um, can you call me 'Lance' from now on? I'd feel more comfortable with it." He said. His mom stared at him.
"I'm sorry, what?" She asked. Lance fidgeted with his shirt, a habit he has to this day.
"I don't want to be your daughter anymore. I want to be your son, and my name is Lance now." Lance said.
His mom hugged him tightly.
"If that's what you want, hijo. I'll support you," She said. Lance broke down crying.
"That was the most relief I had felt in years," Lance told Keith. Keith nodded.
"I had no idea. You're so comfortable with yourself, always expressing your personality that I wouldn't have ever guessed." Keith told him. Lance was taken aback. Nobody had ever said something so genuine to him before.
The scene changed and Lance was back in the dark abyss with no Keith beside him. He was strangely upset. Why? It was just Keith. He didn't mean anything important to Lance... did he?
Lance sat up with a gasp and found himself back in the love dungeon (seriously, he thought. When this is all over, I'm going to wash my mouth and mind out with soap). He looked around and saw that he was alone in the room, except for the nurse.
"Where's... where's..." the words just couldn't come out of his mouth. He felt numb.
The nurse rolled her eyes.
"He's in his room. You can visit him when you're ready to walk," she said as she tapped away at her computer. Lance looked around for a few more seconds before taking the needle out of his arm as carefully as he could. He shakily stood up, almost falling over.
The nurse looked at him.
"Where're you going?" She asked.
"I... talk... Keith..." Lance managed to spit out. She raised her eyebrow.
"Okay... let me help you," She said as she stood up. She took Lance's arm and helped him through the door. She smiled.
"I'm gonna be honest, I've never seen someone do this." She said. Lance looked up at her.
"What...?" He asked. She shrugged.
"Get to the other patient immediately after waking up. Do you know how long you were out? A week. You need time to wake up, and yet here you are. You and Keith must be pretty close, huh?" She asked. Lance shook his head.
"No... but... it's important... talk..." He managed. He sighed.
"Really? That's new. Alright, here's his door." She knocked on the huge door. Keith answered it and seemed confused.
"Lance? What're you doing here? Pidge? What's going on?" He asked. The nurse, Pidge, shrugged.
"This weirdo wanted to see you. The first thing he talked about. Well, as much as he could anyway. I assume you've got it from here?" She asked. Keith nodded and helped Lance sit on his bed.
"You... okay?" Lance asked. Keith sat next to him.
"Honestly, I don't know. I feel so emotionally drained. I've kept my past a secret for so long and all of a sudden, the person I thought I hated knows it all." Keith admitted.
"I just don't know what to think. What about you? Are you okay?" Keith asked. Lance tried to say something, but words weren't coming out of his mouth. Keith softly smiled.
"Right. You just woke up. Sorry." They sat in silence for a while. A really long time. It wasn't awkward, not at all.
Keith got bored and started reading a book. Lance poked him and Keith looked up.
"Read... loud?" Lance asked. Keith smiled and nodded, reading to Lance. They found themselves snuggled up to each other under a blanket, Lance resting his head on Keith's shoulder. When Keith paused to catch his breath, Lance held his hand up.
"I'm sorry about... your family," Lance said. Keith frowned and looked away.
"Yeah, me too." He said. Lance hugged Keith, tightly.
"Seriously... I'm sorry, man."
"Don't be. None of it was your fault." Keith said.
"It wasn't yours either," Lance assured. Keith stiffened.
"It really wasn't. There was nothing you could've done. I wish I had known you at that time, though. You would've had someone to confide in." Lance said. He found that his talking was getting easier, which he was thankful for.
Keith hugged Lance back.
"Thank you, Lance," Keith whispered.
There was a knock at the door before a girl with long white curly hair entered. She smiled.
"My name is Allura, and I'm here to give you your test results! It's exciting, really. We've never seen a number quite this high." She said. Lance and Keith sat up straight.
"It's a perfect match! You two are definitely going to live a happy life together, congratulations!" She said. She reached into the pocket of her dress and threw sparkles.
"Wait, a perfect match?" Keith asked. He didn't sound angry, just curious. Allura nodded.
"Yes! I assume you two remember everything that happened while you were in your coma?" She asked. Lance and Keith nodded.
"Well, most of our patients here don't and the fact that you two did? Insane! Also, Lance, the first thing you wanted to do when you woke up? Check on Keith! Keith, the first thing you did when you woke up? Checked on Lance! Most patients just whine and complain about how they can't feel their limbs. Honestly, it was a refreshing break to see you two so concerned with each other's well-being. I really do hope the two of you have a great life together. You can leave as soon as you're ready." She said. She waved goodbye and left the room.
The two boys were silent.
"So... we're compatible?" Lance asked. Keith nodded.
"It appears that way. Well, I could've gotten stuck with worse people." Keith said. Lance pushed Keith, but there was no harm intended.
"I wonder... why was it that the stimulation showed your entire history, but only a little bit of mine?" Lance asked. Keith shrugged.
"Well, it wasn't my entire history. Just the important stuff. There's still a lot about me that you don't know." Keith said. Lance thought for a moment.
"Yeah, the stuff it showed was the most important part of my childhood for me, personally. I wonder if that's all the machine shows? Just what we think the most important part of our past was?" Lance pondered aloud.
"Well, I'm glad it didn't show every detail of my life. I'll have some stories to tell you that way." Keith said.
"Yeah me too. I could tell you about the time me and Hunk were making brownies and just as we were about to pour the batter in the pan, I noticed that we forgot to add nonstick spray, so I shouted 'wait', but Hunk had already started pouring the batter, so he caught it with his hand and I lost it. Seriously, I was on the ground crying and he was really confused because I didn't tell him we forgot nonstick spray. It was a very fun day." Lance said while laughing. (A/N this actually happened with me and my best friend. I was laughing the whole time while writing that paragraph)
Keith and Lance spent the rest of the day telling fun stories. Eventually, Lance left the room to get his stuff packed and he and Keith left the palace side by side.
To all those wondering, no. They did not instantly fall in love. But they became closer and closer friends, until one day, many years later, they both found themselves wanting more with their relationship.
You see, as soon as you find someone who might be compatible, you don't instantly kiss them, do you? No. And the reason for that being is because you don't know them very well.
Keith and Lance wanted to take their time. So, they did.
AU in which the higher ones draw two random names from a basket and those two people have to go into a dungeon (love dungeon if you want. Idk man I was just really low on names) and get hooked up to a machine to see if they're compatible. While in their coma, person A and B both get a glimpse of the most important memories to them. Whether or not they are compatible, is up to you.
This took so much longer to write than I thought. I'm pretty happy with it, considering I was just making this up as I went along.
I own this AU, but I do not own any of the characters (shocker)
Stay awesome my fabulous t-rexs!
