"Mara! Hurry up! You don't wanna be late!" Yelled Stephanie. Mara super sped down the stairs and appeared in the kitchen, hovering above the French Toast that had been prepared.
"I won't be." Mara said, smiling, as she sat down at the table with a plate full of french toast.
"The bus just left." Stephanie added.
" It's fine. I'll run." Mara said with her mouth full.
"It amazes me how many times you've been late this year." Stephanie said.
"Well, it's a new year. I won't be late anymore." Mara said, taking another bite. Today is Mara's first day back from Christmas Break, and the start of both the new semester and new year.
"7:55." Stephanie added. School starts at 8.
"I'm going, I'm going." Mara shoved the rest of the French Toast in her mouth, grabbed her bookbag, and super sped out the door. Within 15 seconds, Mara was in the school parking lot. After another minute, she was settled into her first period class.
"Hey, did Stephanie drive you?" Madison asked as she set her books down on the desk behind me. Madison rides the same bus as Mara, and she's picked up a good bit earlier than she is.
"Yeah. I was running a little late this morning." Mara casually answered.
"No Doubt." She replied. Mara decided to change the subject pretty quick.
"So do you know when we're supposed to be getting our report cards?" Mara asked.
"No clue." She answered.
"Hey was-" Madison started to say, but she put the conversation on hold to look at something at the front of the class. It was a tall, tan guy with dark hair, piercing blue eyes, and a blinding smile. He was wearing pretty normal looking clothes, except for a necklace, and a laughing girl on each of his arms. Neither Mara or Madison had ever seen him before. He wasn't carrying a bookbag or any books or anything. The guy went and sat at the back of the class with the two girls he came in with. Mara looked back at Madison, and she didn't have to say anything, Madison could read her expression.
"Who is that?" Madison asked. Madison glanced back at the guy, not really expecting an answer.
"No clue." Mara answered. Mara looked to the back of the classroom and saw that the guy was no longer seated at the back of the class, and neither was one of the two girls he came in with. They were both against the back wall, kissing, and talking in between each kiss. Neither one of the girls who he came in with went to Smallville High. The whole class was waiting for the teacher to come in and issue a punishment, but before we could see it, the guy went, with the girl, up to the front of the classroom, to the door, and locked it. Then, he went over to the teacher's desk, picked it up with one hand, and carried it over to put in front of the door. By now, everyone's mouth had dropped, including Mara's. That desk was way too heavy for a single guy to lift on his own that quickly. And way heavier with one hand. Mara could've easily picked it up and put it back, but she didn't want to risk exposure. This guy, whoever or whatever he was, didn't seem to care. He picked the girl up and set her on the desk as he was still kissing her. Mara was going through what she thought he was in her head, but stopped when she got a closer look at his necklace. It was engraved with the Kryptonian symbol for risk. That narrowed it down a good bit. He was either a Kryptonian, like Mara, or someone powerful enough to take it from one. The guy had stopped kissing the girl and looked to the back of the classroom, and then directly at Mara. It was then she realized that everyone had moved to the back of the class. Everyone but her. Mara quickly got up and wanted to run back and stand by Madison in the back, like everyone else, but it was too late. She already had his attention. There wasn't any room to back out. Everyone was watching.
"Who are you?" Mara asked. The guy smiled. The teacher had just arrived and started beating the door at this point. It was no use.
"My name is Ryden." He said, and returned the question. "Who are you?"
"My name is Mara." I said. He smiled again, and there was a short silence. Then, Mara did something even she wouldn't have thought she'd do.
"So, Ryden, are you a big risk taker?" Mara said, glancing at his necklace. Ryden's eyes widened. Mara smirked.
"How did you know?" He shook off the question pretty casually. Mara hadn't noticed anything but the two of them talking for a while until she'd heard the sirens start. They were halfway across town, Mara could tell, but they were on their way. Ryden had apparently heard them too because he picked the desk back up, put it and everything that had fallen off of it back where it belonged, and unlocked the door. Mara didn't realize he'd done half of it while superspeeding until she saw and heard the clock after he was finished. After that, he went over to the teacher's desk and wrote something down on the roll. He smiled, sped over and picked up the two girls he brought in, and left us with one last line.
"See you next period." Then he sped out the door.
