It suddenly hit me when I lay in my bed after returning from the hospital.

I had asked Mackenzie out on a date.

She said yes.

Why did I even ask her out on a date when I had no clue where to bring her? I'm a broke high school student.

"Mom," I yelled. "I need to talk to Scotty, it's really important."

"Use the house phone."

Sadly, I was constantly grounded. Every time my punishment was nearly up, I'd do something reckless just for fun. Life is a constant thrill if we make it that way.

"Help," I said into the phone.

"What's up man?" Scotty asked.

"Help."

"Help as in I'm in trouble I'm about to die or help as in girls?" Scotty asked. What could I say? My best friend knew me way too well.

"Help as in I'm in trouble I'm about to die because of a girl," I quickly explained.

I heard a sharp intake of breath on the other line. "Woah! This is serious."

"That's why I called you," I said.

I could almost hear him roll his eyes. "If you didn't notice, I've been pining over Sarah Nolan for years. Has that gone anywhere? No!"

"Maybe that's cause she thinks you're gay!"

"Wait, wh-"

"Emergency, help me with this girl."

"But I'm not-"

"We can deal with that later, this is a crisis," I screamed into the phone. I wasn't being overdramatic at all. "I met a girl and I asked her out on a date."

"Oh, she said no, I'm so sor-"

I smacked myself on the forehead. "She said yes, you idiot!"

"Oh, what's the problem?"

"I don't know where to take her," I explained. I mean, she likes thrills, right?  What's more thrilling than almost dying?

Scotty paused for a moment. I could hear his breathing on the other line. Scotty had a bad habit of putting his phone in front of his face when he thought. I guess that's okay though since I am the only teenager who actually likes calling people nowadays. He just picks up because he's my friend and I'll probably kill him if he doesn't pick up. Wouldn't that be thrilling? It would actually.

Maybe I should add that to my bucket list.

Not that I actually have a bucket list.

That would imply that I actually spend a lot of time thinking about something before I actually go ahead and do it. I never do that.

"Since you're so impulsive, why don't you bring her to the first place you thought of?" Scotty asked.

I rolled my eyes. "The first place I thought of was a dog food company."

"A dog food company, why would you even think of that?" Scotty said.

"Well, it actually makes quite a lot of sense when you think about it. Mackenzie probably likes dogs."

"What's your evidence for this?" Scotty asked. I heard the noise of shuffling papers in the background. He was probably being a good student and actually doing his homework.

"Most people like dogs. Most people also like food. Most people enjoy someone else's company," I explained. Scotty's laugh started out quietly but then he couldn't control it. He burst into loud laughter but I wasn't offended. I knew my plan was ingenious.

The problem with most typical first dates is that they are predictable. Dinner and a movie aren't that exciting.

"That makes a lot of sense. You should go for it, man."

"Thanks!" I yelled into the phone before I immediately hung up. Scotty was probably offended. Poor Scotty.

An idea suddenly struck me. I knew girls. Girls could help me. They knew exactly how they thought because each girl is the same. I'm convinced that every girl is secretly related. Girls are just so similar to one another. Their minds are wired to think in the same way. It's magical.

I wasn't sure if it was fortunate or unfortunate but I only know two girls. One of them was Titania. The other was the love of Scotty's life, Sarah Nolan.

I picked up the phone once more and dialled Scotty's number.

"Well, if isn't the guy that hung up on me just minutes ago," Scotty said. Faint amusement was clear in his voice. "What advice does he want from the worst advice giver on earth this time?"

"Sarah Nolan's number."

"So, you go and get yourself a date and then you think that you can just go and steal my girl? Clearly, this friendship is only one sided."

"This friendship has always been one sided. I'll get you a copy of that video game that you wanted if you tell me," I said. Scotty always loved video games so I knew he would tell me exactly what I wanted to know.

"Our relationship hasn't got that far yet but I do know that she goes to the park at this time every day."

"That'll do," I said. "Thanks."

"A-are you still getting me the game?" Scotty asked. His voice was filled with complete anticipation for my answer.

I snorted. "Yes Scotty, I'll get you the game."
