Fallen Ill
I wrote this story years ago and had much more to add, but sadly never got around to it. I do want to publish this though, and I hope to write some actual shorts to add to this book in the future.
Please feel free to leave some comments, criticisms, or suggestions of what you'd like to see in the future!
Lance flirts slyly with a short but cute yellow/green alien with long and silky blue hair. She blushes and smiles sweetly in response to his advances.
The planet they stood on was much like Earth, from the animals to the air, but the inhabitants were a kind race of aliens who had thrown the team a party.
Most the race had similar colors of yellow and blue hair, along with odd flower sprouting from their arms. Much to everyone's surprise Lance's latest victim sweetly took ahold of his hand, he was about to make another sly pick up line before the woman interrupted him.
"Blue Paladin of Voltron, please, come with me so you may see the waters you speak so fondly of?"
Lance had to hold back a gasp of amazement, the planet even had lakes and oceans! Or at least some body of water, and that was far better than anything they had been gifted before in his books.
"I'd love to!" Lace smiled, his flirty facade falling a moment as excitement washed over him. Keith was quick to interject not quite trusting this strange planet yet.
"Don't you think we should stick together? We can't afford to loose anyone."
"Awww you're saying you'll miss me?" Lance smirked, pursing his lips and putting a hand to his cheek mockingly, the other still intertwined with the aliens.
"What? No, I never said that!" Keith blushed causing Pidge and Hunk smirk as well.
Shiro simply sighed, "Go ahead Lance." He hummed in agreement, much to Keith's dismay. He opened his mouth to protest but was cut off again.
"Just be careful, we arnt sure what this planet can do yet."
The alien girl smiled in pure delight, her intentions seeming pure. Lance smiled too giving a small, "Lead the way doll-face." Before he was pulled along through the woods of golden bark trees and purple leaves.
Keith huffed in annoyance.
"What, are you jealous?" Pidge smirked, Hunk behind her with his arms crossed and his 'I know something totally embarrassing to say right now' grin.
"Why would I be jealous?" Keith asked defensively, puffing up his cheeks like a small child. Hunk's grin only grew wider. "I can flirt with any girl on this planet!"
"Nonono, not of the girl, of the boooy." Hunk butted in, trying his very best to suppress his laughter.
Keith only blushed harder, opening his mouth to shout but another thought cut through his mind.
"Wait, where did Shiro go?" Keith glanced around for the taller anxiously.
"Don't change the subject!" Pidge squeaked.
"It was just getting good." Hunk whined. "Plus, he probably left to go talk with the locals."
Keith nodded at the response, and while ignoring the green and yellow Palidans weaved his way through the crowed to get his mind off of things.
The party continued normally, nothing seeming amiss and everyone acted as normal as aliens could. Not a thing out of place until Shiro had noticed Lance and his 5th girlfriend this week return.
Shiro had let out a small yell of shock, seeing the panicked and teary-eyed alien trying her best to put pressure on a bleeding wound on Lance's right bicep.
Lance's face was sweaty and his eyes panicked, but he did his best to calm the girl.
His voice stayed even and strangely soothing the whole time.
Shiro rushed forward immediately the panic of an injured crew-member biting at the back up his mind.
"What happened? Lance, how hurt are you?" Shiro masked the panic in his voice by raising his tone dramatically, catching the attention at everyone at the party.
A few screamed while others gasped loudly. The rest of the paladins rushed forward and bombarded Lance and the alien girl with the same questions.
Lance visible flinched at the volume, causing Shiro to cringe when he squinted his eyes as if he had a massive migraine.
Somehow he managed to open his eyes again and force a smile.
"It's ok! Honestly, on our way back t- there was a wolf. It's ok though, I managed to scare him off after he attacked."
The Alien pulled the torn piece of her dress away from the bleeding wound, the large bite mark tore and cracked through his armor.
It hit his skin hard enough for the crimson blood to trail down his arm and begin pooling bending him.
Shiro was quick to end the party, apologizing for the short notice and escorted Lance quickly to the medical bay.
The entire way there fussing like a worried parent, and at this point he pretty much was.
When Lance had said he would walk on his own fine Shiro had kept his arm around Lances back and hand above his waist and quickened his pace.
Once rushing back through the castle Alura spoted the 5 And began to greet them before gasping at the sight of the blue paladins crimson blood.
Coran looked on in shock and fear, immediately rushing to the medical bay as well.
Once his armor was off it was clear the wounds weren't as serious as the others had feared, causing a wave of relief.
But it was deep enough to bleed and cause Lance to flinch when it was touched.
Lance had insisted the wounds weren't bad enough to be put in the healing pod, and reluctantly Coran agreed.
The wounds were treated and bandaged beyond satisfaction, and things calmed down.
Or so everyone thought.
After a day the team had almost completely forgotten about about Lances injury, even Lance himself.
But around day three things began changing, or more specifically, Lance began changing.
Restlessness.
Lance would constantly be bouncing his leg, or drumming his hands on his thighs or table.
He'd glance around constantly and even whistle from time to time. The team disregarded this and passed it off as his anxieties.
Something Hunk had told them about after an incident during training.
Anger.
During training Lance would grow much more frustrated, hit harder, faster.
Anytime Keith would make a sharp insult or remark Lance was quick to make a hostile retort.
He grew much less patient and more demanding. Much less willing to sit back and listen and more intent on jumping into action and getting things done.
And then began the changes that the team just couldn't ignore.
Everyone sat down around the table, Hunk had made something new with the green goo and called them in for dinner.
Chattering happily, eating goo and drinking whatever-the-heck-this-is.
But for most the dinner Lances goo remained untouched, anytime he did eat it was in small bites and seemed very forced.
He had realized earlier in the day that his body would immediately reject anything he'd try to swallow. Almost as if he couldn't, chewing stopped his breathing and forced his body to twitch.
Lance would be lying if he said he wasn't scared of the new development.
When he did eat though, his eyes would fill with a strange panic and would breathe deeply or rapidly.
Nobody seemed to pay attention though, It was all normal, Lance laughed happily at a joke Pidge had just made, then took a drink. But he found gagging instead.
Everyone turned their heads to the blue paladin, who had clutched his hands over his stomach coughing and forcefully spat out his drink.
Keith worriedly gave Lances back a few firm pats,.
"Are you ok, Lance?"
"I'm fine!" Lance snapped back, he paused a moment to straighten himself out.
"I- I'm fine, guess I just swallowed my drink wrong?" He joked, Pidge rolled her eyes and smirked.
"Only you could manage something like that." Shiro on the other hand, still seemed worried.
"You're sure you're alright?"
Lance nodded with a coy smile and everyone continues their dinner as normal, but Lance didn't dare make the small mistake.
His food remained untouched.
Two more days has passed, and Lance found himself unable to swallow anything, even his own saliva.
At any chance he could take, he found himself spitting into sinks or the odd alien land around him.
His muscles continued to randomly twitch and convulse, he was never still and constantly moving so he wouldn't have to think about it.
That night he found himself sitting in a living room with his friends, watching some strange Altaen movie.
Lance sat on the edge of the cough next to Keith, constantly wiping his sleeve across his mouth to mop up the drool he knew was there.
Nobody else seemed to notice though, so it was ok.
He was bouncing his leg, until Keith got annoyed and told him to stop.
Lance rolled his eyes and began drumming on his legs with his hands.
This continued a while until Pidge got annoyed aswell and told him to stop.
Lance then resorted to biting on his bottom lip.
Almost 30 minutes later Hunk looked back to check on his friend and almost screamed at what he saw.
Lance had accidentally bitten through the skin on his bottom lip and blood, mixed with saliva, had begun dripping down his chin and onto his nightshirt.
The chaos that followed Hunks muffled shout of surprised ended with Lance back in the hospital wing, paladins surrounding him as Coran ran a full wellness scan.
After minutes of mistranslation and meaningless arguments Lance was given a diagnosis.
Rabies.
