Chapter Two
Levi's POV
"Levi" Says a familiar sounding voice, startling me awake. "Wake up, Levi."
I shake my head to clear it as I slowly open my eyes. I must have been dreaming.
"What is it that you wanted to discuss with us?" Erwin asks, Mike standing a few feet away from him.
At first I'm confused, but a few seconds later I remember sending Petra to fetch Mike and Erwin. That, at least, was real. I must have fallen asleep just after she left.
"I don't think that the group that has been raiding our supply wagons for the past few months is the Titans." I state with a rather bored expression on my face. "I think that is's someone else, but I'm not sure who."
"It didn't smell like the Titans at the few raided wagons I went to." Mike replies somewhat quietly. I've always been able to trust his nose.
"Why didn't you speak up about this sooner?" I ask, feeling like I've had this exact same conversation before. "We could have found this third group and found out if they are allies or enemies. They might have been stealing from us thinking that we're the Titans."
"I wasn't sure whether or not you would believe me, sir. I know that my nose is almost never wrong, but I myself wasn't too sure about there being a third group."
Eyebrows chips in next. "When have we not been able to trust your sniffer? You're the best tracker we have - even the rumblehorns aren't able to keep up with you and they're practically the bloodhounds of all species of dragons!"
Now remembering where I've had this conversation before, Mike shrinks in embarrassment just like he had in my dream. "Another reason why I didn't trust my nose was because I smelled something I've only smelled once before the first raid I visited." As my 'dream' predicted, his voice is almost as quiet as a murmur. "I smelled the combined scents of a male speedstinger and a female hummingbird."
I freeze for a second, processing the fact that everything that happened in my dream is happening right here and now. I might as well follow it through and actually try to save the other night fury this time. "You should have reported that immediately. You were one of the ones posted outside that night, so you should have told me as soon as you got back that you had found them again."
"I tried to follow the trail several times, but it was always masked by another scent that messes with my sense of smell. It's hard to describe what the scent is, and even the rumblehorns couldn't track them through that scent."
I prepare a small plasma blast in the back of my throat, remembering the events that happened next in my dream. "Could you have tracked that scent instead of their trail?" Erwin asks, and as predicted moves to place his tail on top of Mike's, though this time he's stopped by the small fireball I had already conjured up.
Mike wraps his tail around himself, giving me a small look of gratitude. "No. It was as if the scent was only in a single area that messed with our noses so much that when we tried to track it, everyone went in a different direction and wound up going in circles."
Regretting the next words to come out of my mouth before they're even formed, I ask, "Is there any way it could be related to Hanji? I know they were working on a way to disrupt the sense of smell of even the most talented trackers before they were captured."
The predicted pang of hurt in Mike's eyes appears before he replies. "Possibly, but I think that if Hanji had escaped the Titans, they would have come back to the Scouts. They were more loyal to us than most of the soldiers down there."
"This is true. Hanji was one of out most loyal members. Every opportunity they got, they'd be trying to improve armor, weapons, efficiency of farms, and several other things. Always doing more than their fair share of work."
"Speaking of doing more than their fair share, I don't think that you should be the one on watch tonight, Commander. You do enough for us already. I'll get a small group of changewings to keep watch tonight." Erwin says, a small amount of concern in his eyes.
"I won't be able to sleep tonight anyway, and I have the best night vision. I'm fine as I am. If you're going to send anyone up, send one of the singetails. They're the best at sending signals in the form of fire." My voice is a low growl as I try to mimic the exact conditions that were in my dream. Well, for now. I'm going to at least try to change the way me dream ended.
"Is that all you wanted to discuss?" Mike asks.
"With Erwin, yes." I say as a cold gust of wind flows by and puts out the remains of the small fire I lit earlier. "I would like to discuss another matter with you, Mike."
"I'll be going, then." Eyebrows says, sending a flirtatious wink in my direction before he takes off and heads back towards the camp.
"What is it, Levi?" Mike asks, dropping formalities since it's just the two of us now.
"Remember how I was asleep when you and the bushy-browed pervert arrived?" I ask.
"Yeah. What about it?"
"When I was asleep, I dreamed of that whole conversation and events that took place mere minutes after you two left."
He blinks in surprise and confusion as I carry on. "I want to change something that happened in that dream."
"What happened?" The sand wraith asks quietly.
"A night fury was shot down and captured by the Titans and I did nothing to help him or her." As Mike takes a second to let this sink in, I hear the faint rustle of wings I've been waiting for.
"They're here."
"How can you tell?" Asks Mike.
"I just heard the same faint rustling of wings that I heard in that dream."
