Chapter One

The chains rattled on my ankles giving me more of a feeling of being trapped in this cell, one by one I watched all of my friends disappear and not come back, and I knew that they were being tortured and tormented because of the suspected sorcery in the air after my mother.

They just ran into our house, tearing books off the shelves and throwing things into the fire that lit our small home, warming the rooms up, burning everything I owned, then they burnt everything I loved, starting with my mother.

I looked down at my lap at the chains, the metal clanking together quietly. Four walls. That's all I see. Nothing more, nothing less. I sat there silently, huddled up like an armadillo, it was cold. It felt like the room was engulfed in the depression filled dampness that is surrounding everything. It is as damp as early-morning dew on the grass.

The neglected bucket that is positioned in the opposite corner of my insalubrious bed lets the smell of urine diffuse. I feel secluded here; the walls are closing in on me, eyes are watching my every movement through the minute window; it’s as if they are trying to stare into my soul and laugh at what has become of me, of what will become of me.

Right now I feel as if I have no hope, with the prospect of having no hope, I gave a grim but stiff smile to myself. I was reluctant- reluctant to admit what I am, what I have long since been, what I am to become. Maybe this is my last surrounding area before I die, maybe this is it.

I continue staying slumped on the wall uncomfortably. Suddenly, my vision is obscured, and I cannot see, however, slowly a vision arouses, I am no longer at the prison cell, but the sea greets me with rippling echoes amplifying across the horizon. The bright blue skies hover over eccentric tourist heads, almost, just almost, dismantling the sun’s glittering, glamorous brightness in the process. As I walk, the thin sand courses through my toes.

The aroma of a sundae surprise, permeated with the ever-brown chocolate toffee sauce, conquers my nostrils, seducing my wallet as every second went by. The sensation in my stomach is intimate. I am here, this is it. This was a nice thought, until it was interrupted and I was back in the dark cell walls, and the sound of rattling keys came towards me, I was the last one. It was my turn now.

I wiped my eyes slightly as the people approached my cell, coming inside and disturbing me of my peaceful and subtle aroma. I didn't fight them as they pulled me up, forcing me to walk with them down the outstretched corridor, and outside where the bright light awakened upon my face, warming my skin as I savoured it quietly.

I looked around to see the many crowds of people, all eager to see how everything would end, their merciful smirks from what monsters they had become of killing innocent people, for entertainment was stretched across many faces.

I swallowed, terrified of what destiny awaited me, I stepped up onto the wooden stage, looking around to see the hangings and beheadings of my friends being taken away as I shake a little, it would all be over soon.

I winced slightly as they tied my hands with the ropes against the stake a little too tight, discomforting but I didn't bother fighting it. I looked up at the dark skies, the sun hidden behind the clouds, it too not wanting to bare seeing my death as I closed my eyes and breathed in deeply.

A man stood infront of me, on the makeshift podium, claiming as speech as he does every burning death, "you all see today, before you another witch, the daughter of all whom we thought we loved, they have been lying to us all these years--"

I hated to think of what speech was given at my mother's death, they seemed to hate us all now. Every person I thought I knew too vulnerable to the lies of others.

"--and we are brought here today to take our revenge!" The crowd erupted into cheers of laughter and applause as I looked down at my feet, feeling ashamed of everything.

I stood standing still as they lit the fire, the crowd booming louder around me, excited to watch me die a painful death, as painful as their everyday lives living in this outrageous village, killing only innocent people.

"Any last words, Nora?" The man mumbled to me, loud enough to hear as I stared intently with a smirk. I looked at him, refusing to say anything as people began to want my death more, impatient to wait.

He gruffed quietly as he furrowed his brows together a moment, taking in my appearance before he moved back down from the stage, lighting the wood upon fire as waves of it came toward me, heating up and burning the wood as I swallowed and squeezed my eyes closed.

Small droplets of rain fell onto my nose, cold as ice as I opened my eyes to look up at the sky, an erupted sound of thunder came, followed by lightening as it began to rain heavier, so heavy that the small ignited fire didn't stand a chance to grow just yet.

I looked around as the crowd grew confused and began to run for shelter away from me, assuming it was part of witchcraft, though I thought it was coincidence until I heard the faint whisper in my ear, "You are the last witch. invenietis illos. Break free.."

I looked around a bit more panicked, wondering if anybody else had heard this, it all coming as a shock to me as I tried to free myself from the ropes, it cutting free from the source of lightening, then I was tripping over everything, running as fast as I could away into the dark forbidden forests, scrambling and hoping nobody was following me.
