003

Life Skills was always Nani's least favorite class. The boys basically got permission to hit people (Jerome Valeska), while the girls had to sit through these irritating lectures about nobody (Jerome Valeska). A fictional character.

Nani and Bryce slid into their normal three-seater desk in the back. The two began to talk amongst themselves as the class began to fill up. Nani jumped as another body slid onto the bench. She swung her fist as hard as she could. When she turned around to look at who she hit, she gasped to see Josh on the ground, his legs still beneath the desk.

"I'm sorry." She smiled sheepishly, pulling him up. "Beautiful and you pack a punch. Whatever guy has got you tied down is lucky." Nani glared at her best friend when he answered with a 'thank you' instead of an agreeing nod.

"I'm single, actually. I don't understand why, if my parents are so worried about the infamous Jerome Valeska. But I am, unless Jerome has already chosen to take me off of the market." She joked. Josh shook his head, "You definitely shouldn't be. I know that much."

Bryce rolled his eyes at Nani's shy smile, but before he could say anything rude, the teacher, Miss Baker, began roll call. "Okay. Now that we've got that out of the way, who all did their homework?" As her eyes scanned the room, the teacher stopped at Janis Mucker, the only girl with her hand not raised.

"And what, Mrs. Mucker, makes you think that with Jerome Valeska out there, on the loose, that you, an almost eighteen year old female, can skip her homework?" Janis gulped, hoping she could find a way to save herself from the one thing allowed to be feared more than Valeska: A senior class teacher.

"I-I promise I can recite most of the story. It's just that last night I-" She was cut off by Baker's yells, "Most isn't good enough! Don't bother telling me an excuse Janis. It obvious what you were doing last night. You were begging to die! Get out of this building until you decide living is worth a little sacrifice!" Janis was frozen to her seat, so Baker ran at her desk, "Go!" Janis jumped out of her seat, running out of the room, tears streaming down her face.

"Now, Nani. Up to the front of the class. I want Le Joker recited in whole, in front of the class. You'll be in danger in less than a week. Don't screw this up." Bryce lightly punched her shoulder as she stood from her seat. "Eons ago, Gotham was a city of riches, scandal, and bustling activity.

"For every thief, crook, and villain, there was a cop, detective, or hero to defeat them. Until the days of Jerome Valeska. He started young, at only eighteen years old, he murdered his mother in cold blood.

"A charmer and a sweet talker, Jerome kept even the GCPD fooled for days. His ways didn't change once he was he was admitted into Arkham..." For half of an hour, Nani told the story, just as her parents and teachers had recited it to her and every other little girl in Gotham. The class was hooked on her every word and wide arm movement.

"To this day, Jerome Valeska still roams Gotham. Every forty years between the months of May and November, he searches for a new wife to capture on the eve of her eighteenth birthday. The age his life began, ended, and finally, gained meaning. The year he became the legend. The year whispers began of Le Joker."
