five
By the next morning, both the storm and my seemingly bad mood had mostly disappeared. Grey clouds still danced across the ceiling as I slipped into the Great Hall later than most. McGonagall handed me my timetable and I studied it as I slipped into a seat next to Lana.
A space away and across the table George, Fred, and Lee were still discussing how to age themselves into the Tournament. I rolled my eyes and tuned them out, eating and talking to Lana until I heard the familiar rustle of hundreds of owls soaring above us, carrying the morning mail.
"It's amazing really," I said looking up at the birds. "That none of the birds ever poop on us. You'd think at least one would. Also, there are so many owls and it never really feels like there aren't that many people here-whoops."
I hadn't really been expecting any mail, I never usually got any mail on the first morning, so when my family's small, brownish owl dropped the letter into the middle of the table and plopped onto my shoulder, I wasn't ready and the letter splattered a bowl of oatmeal, reaching a good ways and getting both Lana and Fred covered in oatmeal.
Lana let out a groan, while Fred mumbled about having to change.
"Um, you're a wizard," I said and he gave me a puzzled look. I fed my bird a treat and he flapped his wings a few times before taking off.
"What does that have to do with anythi- ?"
"Use magic to clean yourself off. Merlin, do I have to always be the brains around here?!" I pointed my wand at both of them, muttering the spell I knew so well. Once they were both clean, I grabbed my letter and stood, stretching the kinks out. "I'll see you in class Lana."
"We've only got a few minutes," she said, but I was already halfway to the door. "Where are you going?"
I waved a hand back at her and she stopped stuttering out questions. The letter itself wasn't important, a postcard from my brother and Devon, but I wanted to hang it up on my board before I forgot and it sat in my bag. The last one that had sat in there had crinkled in the corners and not even magic could make it look better.
This postcard was from a small village in Austria, known for its fairytale like status and network of witches and wizards helping to maintain its status.
I tacked it up on my board before hurrying off for my first class, double potions with Hufflepuff.
It wasn't till the end of classes when something exciting finally happened. I was heading to the Great Hall, already running late and taking the steps two at a time when I heard Mad Eye Moody shout, "OH NO YOU DON'T LADDIE!"
I hurried my pace wondering what the old crazy could be yelling about now. I'd had him for class earlier in the day and he had yet to disappoint, going over curses and fighting and shouting about this and that.
I skidded down, making it down just in time to see Professor Moody limping down the marble staircase. His wand was out and pointing at a pure white ferret, shivering on the cold floor.
"Aw, you poor thing," I muttered looking at it sadly. I wondered what it had done to warrant Moody's rage.
Nobody else in the Hall moved or said a thing as I slipped my way over to my friends. Everyone was too busy watching with terrified silence as Moody pointed one eye at Harry and the other at the ferret.
"What's with the ferret?" I muttered to the twin closest to me, Fred.
"It's Draco." His lips barely moved as we watched Moody ask, "Did he get you?"
"Draco Malfoy?"
"No. Missed."
"Do you know any other Draco's?"
"I was just making su-"
"LEAVE IT!" Moody shouted and we all jumped. My arm bumped Fred's as I resisted the urge to hide behind him, mostly because now I was too terrified to even try to move a muscle. Although, I probably could've easily fit my whole body behind him.
"Leave what?" Harry said, asking the question most of us were probably thinking.
"Not you! Him!" Moody growled, jerking his thumb over his shoulder. I stood on my tiptoes to see Crabbe, frozen as if he was just about to pick up the white ferret.
"How did he see that?" I muttered. "He wasn't even facing that direction."
Moody began to limp towards Crabbe, Goyle and the ferret, who immediately began to try an escape. He dashed in the direction of the dungeons, but didn't get very far as Moody pointed his wand at the ferret and it flew ten feet into the air.
"I don't think so!" He roared as the ferret fell with a smack to the floor and then bounced back up. I winched.
"So like, I don't like Malfoy either, but like that is definitely going to be traumatising," I muttered and Lana mumbled in agreement.
"I don't like people who attack when their opponent's back's turned," Moody growled, making the ferret bounce higher and higher, squealing with each bounce. "Stinking, cowardly, scummy thing to do...."
The ferret flew through the air, its legs and tail flailing with each additional bounce.
"Like Draco's already got enough problems and when you add this on, I don't know how he's ever going to be able to make it through the next few years."
"Never. Do. That. Again," Moody said, each word being spoken as the ferret hit the floor and then bounced up again.
"Professor Moody!" said a shocked voice and I turned to see Professor McGonagall coming down the stairs, her arms laden with books. She pushed her way through us, separating me slightly from the twins
"Hello, Professor McGonagall," Moody said, eyes not breaking from bouncing the ferret higher and higher.
"What....What are you doing?" McGonagall looked entranced with the ferret.
"Teaching."
"Teach - Moody, is that a student?" McGonagall's shriek made me winch as the books spilled from her arms.
"Yep."
"No!" She pulled out her wand. Within a few moments and a loud snapping noise, Draco had replaced the bouncing white ferret. His face was a bright pink and his usually sleek blonde hair looked like it'd just had sex.
"Moody, we never use Transfiguration as a punishment!" Professor McGonagall said. "Surely Professor Dumbledore told you that?"
There was a tug on my arm and I turned to see Lana standing there, biting on her bottom lip. "Food?"
I nodded and followed her out, glancing over my shoulder to see Moody seizing Malfoy's upper arm, marching him off.
The twins and Lee brushed past us and by the time we reached the Great Hall they were already sitting down down with Ron and Harry.
"-had a lessen like it," I heard Fred say as we sat down across from him. Lana was quick to load up her plate and I followed suit soon after.
"Who?" Lana asked.
"I'm assuming Moody," I answered and George nodded.
"He knows, man," said Lee.
"Knows what?" Ron asked, eagerly leaning forward and I bit down on a laugh.
"Knows what it's like to be out there doing it," George said, his voice dipping and causing even me to lean forward in anticipation.
"Doing what?" Harry asked.
"Fighting the Dark Arts," Fred said and I snorted at the simple answer.
"He's seen it all," George said.
"'Mazing," Lee added.
We all watched Ron dive for his timetable, scanning it quickly before whining out, "We haven't got him till Thursday!"
"You'll survive," I said, standing up and stretching. Moody honestly gave me the creeps, so I don't know why everyone else liked him so much.
"Where you going?" Lana asked, sticking out her bottom lip. Her hair bobbed as she pouted up at me.
"To the library. I've got homework and only a few hours till they'll quick me out of there." I reached down to grab my bag. "You can join me, you know?"
She shrugged and made a face up at me. "Maybe later."
"I'll join you," a voice across the table said and we all looked over in surprise as Fred stood up, his food barely touched.
"But you never go to the library!"
"I've got some work to get done as well."
"You do work?"
"Ha. Very funny. I do work sometimes."
"But you've still got food!"
He waved his twin off, causing us all to look even more surprised. "I'm not that hungry."
"Are you feeling alright?" Lee asked and I reached across the table to (jokingly) feel his forehead.
"Hmmm. He does feel a little warm," I teased as he swatted my hand away. "Maybe we should stop by the infirmary on our way."
"Yeah you might need to do that," George said, ignoring Fred's glare in his direction. "I think he might've caught a bad cause of the fe - bloody hell Fred."
He was rubbing the back of his head where, only moments ago, Fred had whacked him. It had been a decent hit too, as we could all hear it.
"Sorry," he mumbled and George waved him off with, "go have fun studying. We'll catch up with you two later."
Fred was quiet during the walk to the library, rarely talking unless I asked him a question. When we found a table, near the back corner, he pulled out his books and parchment and I actually thought he was going to do work and let me get mine done. Instead, he let his head bang down on his book, after only two minutes, his red hair covering his face and most of the book up.
"How can you just sit there and do work?" He whined, lifting his head up to watch me. For several minutes he sat there silently, watching my write out my essay and I liked it. I don't think he could tell what I was writing and I should've felt creeped out with him watching me, but it was actually quite comforting. Or rather it was until he started tilting my chair backwards. I swore and planted my feet on the ground, kicking his foot away in the process.
"Fred," I said giving him a grim smile. "If you weren't going to do your work then why did you come?"
"Well I didn't want you to be lonely love," he said with a grin and I rolled my eyes.
"I'm fine Fred. I'm doing homework. Can't get lonely doing homework."
"Sure you can," he said leaning his head onto his hand and watching me as I picked up my quil again. "I can never do homework alone. The silence gets to me."
"Mhm."
"Probably comes from never having a quiet time at home," he continued on, tapping his free hand on the table lightly. I glanced up at him before going back to my essay. "Too many siblings to ever have a quiet home I guess."
I shrugged and he continued to talk. I mostly worked as I listened to his continuous chatter, stopping every once in while to listen to a particalarly interesting story or ask a question. When I had finally finished my essay, I began telling him my own stories.
