Natasha's POV
I held Clint's hand as the heart monitor beeped every few seconds. It had been like this for weeks. I watch Clint as he sleeps, he sleeps while I worry. That's how I've been living my life for a while. Some of the Avengers would drop by and try to cheer me up, even invite me to do something fun, but I always refuse. What if he woke up and I wasn't there? I owe it to him to be by his side for as long as I can. What can I say? I'm in love with the idiot. But that's not the only reason I'm staying. It's my fault that he's like this. The mission went so horribly wrong! I don't understand what happened. One minuet we are on the escape helicopter, I'm smiling at Clint as he treats my arm and telling me to stop taking risks...then nothing. The next thing I knew I was in a hospital bed right next to Clint. The doctors said he had fallen into a coma. They don't know when he's going to wake up.
The only thing that keeps me from completely cutting myself off from the world is my best friend, Janis Bakely and her boyfriend (also my ex-enemy) Loki, God of Mischieve.
I visited them once in a while. Usually just hanging out and telling stories. It made me sad and a bit angry to see Janis and Loki together. It reminded me of Clint and I...and how the only thing keeping us apart was some dumb coma. They were lucky that they had each other. I envied the way Loki stared at Janis with those hungry, wondering eyes. Like he couldn't get enough of her. Janis had no idea how good she had it, minus the fact that she's supposed to be dead. If I could only talk to Clint one more time...
The heart monitor beeped a little faster and it slapped me back into reality. I leaned closer to Clint, a bit excited to see if he was awake. He moved a bit. Panic and excitement ran through my body like fire. I clutched his hand tighter ad whispered cautiously, "Clint?"
His mouth barely even moved, I could barely hear, but I just heard him say, "Tasha..." I gripped his hand tighter, if that's even possible. All he said was my name, over and over but in a sort of trance. Like as if he couldn't find me.
So I just whispered back, "I'm here Clint..." I say that to him until he suddenly stopped and his heart rate went on a normal pace. I loosened my grip and slumped back down in my chair. That was the first time I had heard his voice in weeks. Who knows if I'll ever hear it again?
The thought settled on me slowly as I imagined a coffin, all sleek ad black, containing the only man I've ever truly loved inside.
I brought my knees close to my chest and buried my head deep into my knees. It would be my fault if he died. All. My. Fault. He would then just be another gallon of red on my ledger. I have so much of it...but his would kill me. Too much red can kill anyone. So I let out a single tear. Just one tear. I shouldn't cry. Assassins don't cry. Why if Clint saw me now he would be telling me to stop blubbering and act the way I should. As Natasha Romanov, the Master Assassin.
But today I didn't feel like Natasha Romanov, the Master Assassin. I just felt like Natasha Romanov. No tittle. Just Natasha. Nat if you will...or Tasha. Either way I don't care. I don't want to be anything, but a girl who is loved by Clint Barton. Too much to ask?
I could feel someone's presence behind me. I peeked my head up a little and saw that the room was a little illuminated by a blue light. This could only mean one thing. I turned around and was greeted by a Black Sabbath T-shirt, a nicely trimmed goatee, and a blue light coming out of his chest. "Hey Tony." I said, greeting the famous (and sometimes infamous) Tony Stark or as others like to call him, Iron Man.
He pulled up a chair next to me and replied, "Hey Nat." He drummed his fingers against the chair as of he was listening to music. But that's how he always is. When I first met Tony, he was annoying as hell. All aragant and conceded, not to mention shallow. But over time I've seen him change. Yeah he was still all those three things, but I could see other things too. Good things.
We sat in silence for a little, just enjoying each other's company, until he piped up and said, "You know Nat...Clint will be okay. He always pulls through. Well at least he pulls through for you-"
"But what if he doesn't?" I snapped back. I felt bad for snapping at Tony. He was just trying to be nice for once in his life.
Tony just sighed and just said, "He will." Then he stood and left me with my nearly dead partner. What was I going to do? Clint was my rock. The one thing that kept me from going back to my old ways. What if he never woke up?
The thought brought tears to my eyes again until sound blared in my ears and red light flashed. It was the alarm! The alarm that signaled that they found...they found them. I gulped and forced my self to get up an put on my game face. I then touched the hidden earpiece and said quietly, "We have a problem. They are coming."
Janis' POV
I woke up as light peeked at my eyes through the sewer holes. I was about to get up and stretched, but then I realized I was till on Loki's chest. I guess I had been so exhausted that I fell asleep while he was talking. I silently hoped he was angry and took a look at his sleeping face. His lips held a faint memory of a smile while he breathed steadily through his nose. I swept tiny strands of black hair from his face and softly caressed the side of his face, like how my mother did to me. The thought of my mother put me at ill-ease to remember what happened. SHIELD arrested my parents just in case they had any knowledge of my whereabouts. They looked so scared. My parents had no idea what was going on while I just let them get hauled off to jail. Daughter of the year right?
Loki stirred for a moment and I let my hand hover over his face. But he relaxed and settled down again. I smiled at his perfect face. I am in love with a god and he is in love with me. Me! Some girl out of the millions and millions out there! All of my life I've wanted to be special. Now I have powers, joined a team of amazing people, and had a god fall in love with me. And even though times have been tough, I'd rather live this life than be oblivious to magic and monsters and spies.
I gave Loki a sweet quick peck on the lips and heard a voice laugh beside me, "Oh I can't take it anymore!" The Loki I was laying on disappeared and I spun around to find a laughing Loki, real Loki, holding his stomach. I felt my cheeks flush and I sat up quickly. He was choking and I just sat and stared until I started laughing to. It's just like, what the hell? We may not have fun like this for a long time. So we both sit and laugh until Loki kisses my forehead and says, "Good morning my dear Janis."
I giggle and say, "If you ever do that to me again, I'll make myself look like Thor when you wake up!" This made him chuckle as I rested my head on his shoulder. It was a nice morning. Well, that is until I heard the beep in my ear.
"We have a problem. They are coming." That unmistakeable voice of Natasha Romanov rang through my ears as I heard alarms blaring in the background. It took me a second to finally realize what was happening. I sprung up and quickly grabbed the small emergency bag off the floor. Loki stood wide eyed as he realized what was happening. He quickly cleaned up the evidence of anyone ever living there and grabbed my hand.
He then gave me a peck, like the one I had given his clone and whispered, "Let's go." I nodded and we both ran off down into the tunnel. It was damp and slippery, but we had lived down here for a while and was used to it. I could've sworn I heard a crash behind me which quickened my pace. Had they found us already? Man, that was fast. They were getting better and that wasn't good for us.
The sound of boots started to grow louder and louder the faster I ran. It was like I just couldn't escape. Eventually we started to go deeper and hit a dead. I could still hear our persuers and I was out of breath. My lungs were on fire. I had a feeling that Loki felt the same way to. We were stuck. We were stick and there was only one way out.
I had used it when I worked for SHIELD. It was a teleporting device. It took you to the nearest remote island that not many people new about, just in case a spy needed a quick get away. The device was brilliantly designed by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. They were part of the Avengers when I was in the group. Natasha tells me how they are doing great and that they missed me a lot. I wished I could see them. But then again...I probably would in the next hour or so...
The thundering grew louder, so I slipped the necklace on him and pressed against his lips fiercely. If it came down to it, this would be our last kiss. "Goodbye." I whispered as I pressed the button on the necklace. Before he could give any protest he faded away, leaving me with the hurt look in his eyes. I hope he'll be safe, I hoped. I quickly morphed into Loki and waited for the agents. They eventually came and I surrendered immediately. They pushed me down to the ground while locking me into tight, strange handcuffs. Then they hauled me off the a SHIELD vehicle and injected me with some sleep serum. The last thought I had before fading into darkness was a wish for Loki to be okay.
Whew! I felt tense writing that! Poor Loki and Janis! Don't worry I'll get them back together soon. Anyway comment please!
