Chapter 2

As Aviana made her way back to camp, it was finally dark. Lewis and Rick were in the tent, talking in whispers. She brought the berries in and settled down on the crackling, unforgiving leaves. They ate in silence, and when they were done it became even more awkward.
Aviana finally said,“Tomorrow we have to check the ship, okay?” She put the hollowed rocks in the corner.
“Okay, Vi. You and I will go while Lewis starts taking a look around.”, Rick said as he laid down and closed his eyes.
“Hey! So send me to go get eaten by wild animals while you guys go search a shipwreck? Sure!”, Lewis sarcastically exclaimed.
“Okay, okay. Rick, we can’t let Lewis go alone. All he’ll do is scream, beg the animal or whatever to kill us instead- I bet he’ll even point to where we are-, and then die and do us no good. So let’s all go tomorrow.”, Aviana decided and following Rick’s lead, lay down to sleep.
Soon, after grumbling and muttering to himself, Lewis also retreated to sleep topped with a healthy serving of snores. Aviana lay awake for a long time, thinking and planning. Finally, she too fell into a fitful sleep.
She was on the deck of the Water Lily. Aviana turned her head and saw her parents laughing and smiling at her. Lewis and Rick weren’t there, but she didn’t care right now. Everything was beautiful and perfect. The sea was brilliantly blue, the sun shining lazily, and the clouds were drifting across the sky- Aviana couldn’t ask for more. She realized she was sitting on the blanket they always used on picnics, the pink one with blue stripes. Her mom smiled and opened the picnic basket in front of her, and took out tuna sandwiches and apple juice. Aviana laughed, delighted, and turned her face towards her dad and saw a dark shape in the corner of her vision. As the laugh died in her throat, she heard herself scream. A wave, huge and angry was about to swallow their cruise ship. As her mom and dad cried out in anguish, she felt herself floating up, very high. And then darkness overwhelmed her.

Gasping, Aviana woke up and hit Lewis in the face with her head. “Ow, Vi! At least a warning next time.”, he said clutching his nose.
“Sorry, Lewis. I didn’t realize.”, she said distractedly.
“Hey, Vi. What’s up? Apart from Lewis’s nose, I mean.”, Rick casually said as he ruffled his hair, smirking.
“Oh my god, Rick. I didn’t think it was possible to be more annoying than Lewis, but was I wrong”, Aviana said with a sigh as Lewis huffed with indignation.
“Anyway, are we going today or not? I feel like we should first start building a proper shelter and then bring in supplies form the wreck," Aviana said.
Lewis frowned. “Won’t whatever’s left get ruined or something? Shouldn’t we first salvage and then safeguard?”
“Guys, I think we should first scout out our surroundings and then make a shelter in the best possible place, and then take all the supplies. I’m pretty sure the remaining stuff won’t go bad,” Rick suggested, "We can’t take the materials and risk losing them or damaging them, but we also can’t just build camp and find out it’s surrounded by a pack of wild beasts.”
Aviana nodded in agreement, adding that they should at least see how much is worthy of taking so they know how big a shelter they need. Rick nodded, followed by Lewis. As she untangled her hair with her fingers and then continued to comb them out, she thought of what they might find in the ship after building a shelter. Hopefully food, and maybe some clothes. Water barrels would also be great, but maybe-just maybe-she would find her...no, it’s impossible. It would’ve been destroyed. Aviana cleared her head and started braiding her hair. Her mother had taught her how; separate into three, put the right strand in the middle, and then the left strand...repeat. Now following her mother’s guide and remembering all the important things she told her, she braided her hair. Her mother, Rosy,  was a historian with a passion for life lessons.

  Separate into three…

Your greatest power is hope, and it is even stronger if you believe in yourself.

Put the right strand in the middle…

Sometimes, you must follow your heart instead of your mind.

Now do the same with the left strand…

Aviana, remember that you can not trust those with greed in their eyes, no matter what they do for anyone.

Taking a deep breath, Aviana tied the end of her hair and got up. The boys were eating a couple of the leftover berries and some coconut. They had found a cluster of coconut trees a little away, and found out two things: one, that Lewis had a pretty good aim, and two, that if you bash the coconuts hard enough on a rock, they’ll split to reveal a filling meal, or as close as they could get to one. That was found out by Rick, when he got frustrated and threw a coconut at a tree after cursing it. She joined them and picked up half of an uneaten coconut and took a sip of its milk.
“We should get going as soon as your done, Vi. It’ll take us ten minutes or so to get to the wreck,” Rick said as he grimaced and got up and took a peek outside.
“Okay, but I want to ask you guys something first: have you noticed that we haven’t encountered a single animal yet? I mean, apart from the birds we’ve seen flying overhead. We just assumed there are wild animals, but are there actually any? If not,  that's pretty weird. ” Aviana questioned, suddenly suspicious.
All three of them went silent, thinking over this observation. All three of them grew worried, because what Aviana said was true- which meant something probably was wrong. They didn’t explore the island at all, except for the plentiful berry bush and the coconut trees. And which island didn’t have animals? If there were any, did they know that Aviana, Rick and Lewis were here?
"Let’s take that off our minds right now and concentrate on what we need to do today, okay?” Lewis said, breaking the ice.
Aviana and Rick nodded, got up and went out of the tent, closely followed by Lewis. What will we find in this mysterious island, Aviana wondered, and will it be safe? Am I sure that all of us will get back unharmed and with what we are looking for?

Hey! Sorry if this chapter was a bit shorter, I was away. Although, I'm leaning towards not that long chapters for quicker publishing. Tell me what you think ;). Your feedback is wanted!
