Chapter 7
Aviana trudged in silence, only occasionally muttering some distinct words, like "Curse this excuse of a jungle!" Or "As if I'll get lost, you hear?" Then and again they would end up back where they started. It was at these times that Lewis would kick a rock or Rick would pull out a clump of grass in frustration.
Now, Aviana stopped and sat down on the ground. She let out an exasperated sigh. "Where are we?" She asked, her voice on the brink of hysteria.
"I don't know. But, I think I have a good idea." Lewis answered, his voice rising as he gained confidence. "Yeah, yeah! Rick, you used to be the best at that rope climbing exercise we had in gym, right?"
When Rick answered with a nod, Aviana remembered. The teacher would hang a rope on a support beam and they had to see who climbed the highest. Aviana never reached the top if ever the middle, but Rick had the record for the fastest climb in school.
The latter now caught on to Lewis’s idea and started to walk towards the nearest tree, which wasn't far.
He paused. "Wait...how will I see the camp though? It's really small."
"You won't," Lewis cheerfully replied, "you'll see the wreck of the cruise ship."
Aviana gave Lewis a quick squeeze and told him again how intelligent he is. This time, Lewis smirked before tapping his head, indicating his oh-so-big brain. Regretting her decision of praise slightly, Aviana turned her focus onto Rick, who was already out of sight.
A couple of minutes later, Rick gracefully came down the tree, landing smoothly on his feet.
"Up there I saw the wreck a bit in that direction," He said as he pointed to Aviana's right, give or take a few feet. The trio turned around and started walking. Only then did Aviana notice it was turning dark. The pretty blue long gone and replaced with a mellow pink and deep violet. A touch of indigo and yellow here and there suggested they walk quicker.
They had long ago agreed to do the talking later. Now, it seemed like there idea of later was far to come. Aviana couldn't see if the trees would ever end. By this rate, they would have to wait until morning unless they wanted to find out what happens in this illogical place at night. An immediate no signaled clearly to Aviana to stop.
Turning around, Aviana put her hands up in a halting gesture. "Wait guys. We are never going to make it back to camp before dark. Besides, it's already night now. And I for one do not want to find out what other creepy weirdos are out here. Let's just find some bush or something and hide out for the night," she said with masked confidence.
"Oh sure. Let's just hope for the best that we don't get attacked or killed. This isn't some kind of game Aviana! It's life! Pure life! We don't get a SECOND CHANCE!" Lewis shouted as he grew fearful and angry.
Rick and Aviana didn't say anything because they knew what he meant. This was literal life-or-death. They couldn't just risk a night. Because it may very well be your last one, her helpful mind told her.
After thinking, she replied, "How about a tree? Rick can help us climb high enough for us to be safe."
The boys nodded in agreement as Lewis gripped Aviana's hand and gave it a quick squeeze before letting go. Aviana dipped her head in indication of forgiveness. After all, even she was on the verge of craziness from the impossibility if their situation.
"Um, Aviana," Rick started hesitantly, "What if, you know...you black out again?"
Aviana's eyes filled with anger and humiliation before she calmed down and said, "It's ok. Nothing will happen. I just black out when I let out all the fear inside of me. It's ok," she repeated.
Everyone quickly scanned the trees, looking for a good one. "Here!" Lewis exclaimed, before giving a shallow bow and mock smile. "Allow me to show you the 'Tree a la Lewis'," He said chuckling. The two rolled their eyes before taking a good look.
Now Aviana wasn't an expert or something, but she knew it was perfect. The first branch was low and thin, meaning they could quickly get up and snap it so no one follows. The other branches were further up, but Rick could handle that. Each protruding branch was broad from where it connected to the trunk. The branches were smooth- meaning they would have to be careful of falling.
Aviana, Rick and Lewis pulled their selves up onto the smaller branch. Rick shimmied up the trunk, pulling Lewis up behind him. Once Lewis was safely on the next branch, Rick came down a bit and reached out for Aviana's hand. She gripped it tight and launched herself onto the trunk after stomping hard on the branch she was recently occupying. Thus made her clinging to the trunk of the tree, legs around it and hands holding Rick's outstretched one. Then Aviana the koala looked down to see the lowest branch successfully broken and on the ground. Huffing, she found herself half climbing and half falling. Sooner or later she reached the branch, panting hard. The three slowly went up a few more branches so that they felt safe.
By now, it was pitch black in the night. Aviana couldn't hear a thing. The silence was like a held in breath, full of anticipation and anxiousness. It overwhelmed her so Aviana turned her attention to the branch she was on. Lewis and Rick were on separate branches not far off.
Realization hit her and Aviana whispered, "take off your t-shirt and tie yourself to the branch! Then you can't fall." The sounds afterwords confirmed their obedience. She pulled off her dirty, once-pink tee. Underneath she was wearing a simple undershirt and ripped jeans that were once upon a time new. Tying herself securely, she fell into a deep sleep. Her exhaustion almost drowned out the sound of a horrendous crack.
