Chapter 9
"Mmm...these are so good," Aviana muttered, mouth and heart full. They were walking in the jungle, yes. It was hot, yes. But they were almost back at camp and the fruits Lewis had found were delicious and refreshing. They were some kind of purplish oval-shaped fruit with a kind of pink hue on the top and bottom. Inside, the fruit was a peachy color with these tiny, small black seeds. It tasted like honey and strawberries, but in a nice way.
"I know, right?" Lewis said as he licked his fingers with relish.
"Your welcome," Rick said as he rolled his eyes and tried not look amused at their ignorance to the one who identified the strange consumable.
"Thanks," the two chorused.
"Oh my god, look!" Aviana pointed towards the towering wreck that was now in front of them.
Everything else was forgotten, momentarily, and the three whooped and grinned as they ran towards camp. It was almost evening, and they wouldn't spend another night worrying about falling out of trees. Lewis arrived first, with Rick and Aviana not far behind.
"Toffee!" Aviana cooed as she swept up the dog in her arms.
The caramel puppy gave a low whine as it nestled its head into the crook of Aviana's neck. It then jumped down and put its paws on her thigh and sniffed at Aviana's left-side jean pocket.
Realization struck her. "Oh yeah! Guys, here. Thanks, Toffee," she said as she pulled out three orange candies and dished them out. After that, she stroked Toffee's velvety ears as it gave her a cute look with its beautiful brown eyes.
"Ehh...they have some dirt," Lewis whined.
"Well, if you don't want it, I'll have it. We don't have room for picky people," Rick said as he smoothly brushed off any dirt and popped the hard candy in his mouth. He proceeded to crack it with his teeth and then suck contentedly. Lewis gave a shudder and did the same, then gave small, pleasant smile as the taste spread in his mouth. Aviana popped hers in and gave a long suck.
"Mmm..." She breathed as the tangy and sweet taste leaked from the candy and made her mouth water. It felt good to have something sweet in her mouth.
As they finished their sweets, Aviana got hit with another thought. "Oh my God. How did Toffee eat?" She said, worry lining every word.
The boys shrugged and Aviana shot a glare their way before looking around. The inside of the shelter was the same as they had left it, except there was a hole in the corner with water, and another hole next to it with strips of meat.
"Guys...look," she said as she pointed. Two sharp intakes of breath made her go still. A chill crept up her spine. Someone knew they were here!
"Someone left this here. Something knows we are here. We can be as good as dead!" She said as her voice rose with hysteria.
"Calm down. If they meant to harm, Toffee wouldn't be well fed and everything. They must be good then," Rick concluded as Lewis nodded in agreement. Aviana was still worried but right now it was already dark.
"We'll talk about what happened later. Right now, we sleep," Aviana ordered as she curled up with Toffee tucked up in a ball against her stomach, warmth in her dark. She was already growing on her new friend.
Aviana was awakened by an arm smacking her in the face. "MMPH!" She protested as she pushed it off and lashed out.
"Ow!" A whiny voice replied.
She got up and looked behind her. Lewis was holding his stomach while furiously rubbing his nose. Toffee was on his lap and was snuggling into him.
"What the actual- What is wrong with you Lewis!" Aviana practically screamed as she struggled to calm her racing heart. No nightmares tonight, but she fell asleep thinking of who was here for the time they were gone. An arm in her face didn't help her mood.
"Aviana! Don't you go around blaming me!" Lewis said in an irritated tone, "Your dumb dog licked my nose and bit it. Bit it! So I naturally reacted and accidentally hit you in the face," He ended in monotone even though he was blaming her.
Aviana took in a sharp breath. "And then I also just 'naturally reacted' and hit you-" She was cut off, her fake smile now gone as Lewis took over.
"In the stomach! My poor stomach," He said as he pushed off Toffee and held on to his oh so poor stomach. Aviana held on to Toffee and looked away- right into Rick's mischievous eyes. He smirked slightly before Lewis saw him. He then proceeded to full on laugh. Rick held his abdomen as his eyes squinted and tears leaked. Uncontrollable giggles took over as a dumbfounded Lewis looked on and an enraged Aviana cracked her knuckles.
"Good morning too you, too," Rick said as he calmed down. He jumped up and casually walked out.
Astounded, Aviana and Lewis looked at each other before rage filled their faces.
"Are you gonna kill him first or can I?" Lewis growled as he raced out, Aviana on his heels.
