Jack got up from his desk and turned his computer off. "That's it, y'all. In gone for the day."
His three co-workers glanced up from their typing and waved at him. They chorused "See you tomorrow. " and returned to their work.
He chuckled to himself and got in the elevator. He couldn't wait to see his wife Heather. Returning to her smiling face after a long day at work was the only thing keeping him going.
Jack revved the engine of his BMW and tore out of the parking lot. The second he got on the highway he was lost in a sea of cars. He hated rush hour traffic, especially L.A. traffic."Come on!" he honked his horn twice at the driver in front of him. The only response he got was the man's middle finger lifted in the air.
Jack growled and turned on the radio to ease his nerves. "Let's Get It On" floated through his speakers and a whimsical smile appeared on his face as he remembered his honeymoon night with Heather. He smirked and became even more eager to get home.
An hour later, Jack pulled into his driveway and quietly got out. He wanted to surprise Heather with the flowers he bought and take her out.
The front door opened silently and he crept up the stairs to their bedroom.
He stopped in his tracks when he heard a lustful moan. Jack paused and listened again.
"Oooh..oh..yes.." Heather moaned.
His eyes widened and he charged up the stairs and flung open the bedroom door. "Heather!"
His wife shrieked and tossed the sheet over her body. "Jack.."
Jack looked at the man in his bed. "Eric? What in the hell.." He dropped the flowers and pointed to the door. "Get out!"
Eric stammered. "J-jack..this isn't what it looks like."
"Oh so you weren't just screwing my wife then?"
"Um.."
"Get out!"
Jack watched as his best friend scrambled to put on his pants. He stuck out his foot and tripped up Eric at the door. After Eric left, Jack turned his steely glare back to his wife.
"What the hell, Heather? I come home and find you having sex with my best friend?" He watched as his wife twisted a piece of her honey blonde hair between her fingers.
"Well...Jack..I don't know what to tell you! I got bored." She glanced at her hands, which were folded in her lap. "We were just so...in sync..Our schedules never changed and our lives were just habit.." She sighed. "Our love life seemed non-existent and what we did have was..plain."
"What was plain, Heather? What? Did you not enjoy the sex? Did we not go out enough? What?"
"It was boring, Jack! There was no spice or sizzle anymore! When we first got married, we were hot and experimental. Now we make love, what, once every three months? I needed more than that! I needed to feel alive again." She stood up and walked over to her wardrobe, her bare bottom teasing him as she purposely stuck it out for his gaze.
"So you just picked Eric?" Jack ran his hands through his hair and tried not to rip it out.
"Eric is handsome and he showed interest in me. At the last cocktail party we went to, he talked with me for two hours while you schmoozed with the head honchos from the company. You left me alone to fend for myself! Eric stayed with me and made sure I was okay. After that, we went out for coffee a few times and then...well..ya know.." She yanked out her tiny silk robe and turned around to put it on, trying to entice him once more.
"Oh trust me, I know." He sneered at her. "How many times did you two have sex in our bed? Or in our house?"
Heather closed her eyes as she thought. "I don't know, Jack. Five times maybe?"
"In the past two months?"
"Well, yes. That's just here, though. We went to his place more than we came here."
She walked up to him and ran her hands along his chest. "Darling, can't you see that I was desperate? I needed to feel loved and wanted. Eric worshiped me like I was his goddess divine, something you haven't done in years!"
Jack snorted. "You must have been desperate to go to Eric. Trust me, I have seen the guy naked before. It's just a shame you didn't pick a guy with a bigger-"
"Stop it!" Heather placed a hand on her hip and poked her finger in his chest. "This is your fault, Jack! You were negligent! Your work has become your lover, not me. You are constantly at the office and you hardly even kiss me anymore. A woman grows tired of no affection."
Jack pushed past her and grabbed his two duffel bags from his closet. "It is not my fault, Heather. You could have talked to me about it instead of cheating with Eric. Talking is what couples do." He tossed open his dresser drawers and stuffed some pants in a bag. "I'm leaving. You can have the house."
"Jack, you can't be serious! It was a mistake, I admit, but we can work through it." Heather pulled at his arm. "Stop packing, baby."
He turned to her with a fire in his eyes. "Don't call me baby. I'm not your baby anymore." Jack zipped up his bag and went to get his things from the bathroom. "You will hear from my lawyers. I'm done with you."
Heather blocked the doorway with her now exposed body. She cocked an eyebrow and smiled smugly as he raked his eyes down her body. "I know you still want me, Jack." She stepped closer. "Take me, I'm all yours, baby."
Jack blinked hard and snapped out of his trance. "Get out of my way." He shoved her aside and laid his toiletries in his other duffel, zipping it closed.
"Jack, don't you dare leave me. My father is the owner of the company you work for and I can have you fired!" Heather's nostrils flared.
He turned back to face her. "Good. Tell him I quit." Jack grabbed his bags and tore down the stairs.
"Jack! Jack, get back inside now!"
Jack chucked the bags in the back seat of his car. He took one last glance at his wife, shocked to see her still naked. "You better get back inside, Heather, before the neighbors get a look at you." He got in the car and zipped out of the driveway, making his tires squeal.
He drove nonstop until it got dark and the gas light turned on. With no other options, Jack pulled into a little gas station in the middle of nowhere.
The cashier took one look at him and raised his eyebrows. "You okay, son?"
Jack shrugged. "Other than going home to find my wife in bed with my best friend, perfect."
The man whistled and shook his head. "That sure is a doozy, ain't it? Sorry for that, for sure."
"Where is the closest town from here?" Jack grabbed a Coke and a bag of jerky and set them on the counter.
"Rayburn is about a half hour from here. Head to the south and there ya go. Ain't too big, but it is nice." He rang up the items. "That it for ya?"
Jack paid the man and headed back on the road. The stars twinkled and the moon shone bright in the cloudless sky. He took a sip of Coke and felt the carbon burn down his throat. "Rayburn it is."
