The burgers were delicious, and Carmen agreed that they were the best she'd ever had. We didn't talk as we ate but when I insisted on paying the bill she wouldn't shut up until I let her leave the tip. I was glad that she agreed to come to my place, I probably would have broke down if I knew that she was going back to that mess of an apartment, especially by herself at night.
We drove a few minutes while I told her about my parents. "Mom, well, she'll be pleased to see you. Just don't be scared by how enthusiastic she is. And dad, just tell him you play ball and he'll already like you." She nodded. " they sound great" she seemed excited to come, maybe tonight would be the first night in weeks that she slept good.
When we finally pulled up to my house she gasped in surprise, seemingly amazed by even the dirt it stood on. "You live here?" She asked. I laughed. " Yep, this is home." She calmed down enough to walk inside with me.
"Hey mom, we're back!" I yelled. "What do you mean we're?" She called as she walked into the entry way. When she saw Carmen she smiled, shaken. She turned to me, "Finally brought a girl home, it's about time." I went red as a tomato. "No mom, it's nothing like that, Carmen just needs a place to stay for the night." I looked over to see that Carmen was also blushing. Mom frowned. Her words towards Carmen now. "Sorry dear, I just assumed he was bringing you to meet me, he talks about you all the time." I went even redder. "Mom, please." She turned her head to me. "I'm your mother, you shouldn't be embarrassed by me, but I'll let you get Carmen settled in, you be good to her." I nodded. "If you need anything let me know dear." She said to Carmen. "Thank you so much Mrs. Morgan." Mom smiled and blushed. "No need to be so formal, call me Judy." And with that she walked back to the kitchen.
Carmen smiled at me. "Talk about me all the time, huh?" I blushed. "Talk about basketball all the time." I corrected. "Anyway, let's get you settled in before mom can embarrass me anymore."
I took her up to the third floor, where my room was. I told her to wait outside while I got something, but really I was scrambling to clean it in a short amount of time. A few minutes later when I was satisfied with my work, I called her in. She looked around the room, her expression the same as when she first saw my house. "Your bedroom is the size of my whole apartment!" She exclaimed. I went red and thanked her. "I'll go find some of my sisters old night clothes, while you get settled in." She raised her eyebrows, I can sleep on the couch, you don't have to give me your bed." I smiled "it's fine, I want you to be comfortable." I said as I walked out of the room.
