Chapter 9
Gavin
I had made it through the school day and was headed towards the gym, though I had to admit that I hadn't paid the best attention in my classes, I didn't know why but I just couldn't get Carmen out of my head, I mean yeah I'd noticed other girls before but I had always been able to focus. Part of me was scared that after basketball we would stop talking, and go back to our separate little worlds.
I arrived at the gym, Carmen was already there, swishing shot after shot. I watched her just like I had the first time we practiced, we only had two weeks left before the tournament and I had to admit that I was a lot better, so I was relaxed now. Where as then I had been on edge. She had her long bronze hair pulled back, moving so gracefully towards the basket that she could actually brake your ankles. Beautiful. I thought, then I blushed. What was I thinking?
"Are you going to stand there all day?" Suddenly I was snapped back to reality, she was holding the ball to her waste, standing at half court. Waiting for me to run my sprints. I apologized and then got the running over with as soon as possible. I jogged back over to her when I was done. "Hey Morgan, let's see you dunk!" A sarcastic voice wrong out from across the room. Wes.
"Just go away." Carmen said, she was annoyed. But me, I was nervous. I had to seem, tough in front of the guy. "Actually I was here to talk to you Carmen." Anger and confusion suddenly flooded my mind. "Well make it quick, I don't have all day." He smiled, the jerk was up to something. "Well, you see, Carmen, I've had a crush on you for a long time, and I just thought that maybe we could go to home coming together?"
I was to angry to move, I just stood there in shock. But relief washed over me when she laughed in his face. " Wes, bet boy over here may have been dumb enough to fall for your tricks but I'm not, so stop wasting your breath." His arrogant smile, was wiped right off his face, "oh, and just because you're starting to get scared that we might actually beat you, doesn't mean that you need to play flirtation games, so just go back to your little girlfriend who's waiting in the hallway."
He turned his back and walked out, he usually always got the last word, I was impressed with her once again. "Just out of curiosity who is his little girlfriend?" I asked, trying to change the subject from how close the tournament is, and how badly I need to win. "Abigail Peterson." I laughed. "She's so far out of his league, he probably has to pay her to stay with him." And it was true, Abigail was pretty good looking.
"Yeah, yeah, back to practice, let's go!" I rolled my eyes. "Fine, miss perky."
On the way out of the gym I thought of something, and it was now or never. Carmen was right behind me, I turned she ran into me. "Jeez, watch where your walking." She said. "Actually I wanted to ask you something before we leave." She nodded. "Well what is it?"
"Um, do you want to go to homecoming together, I mean you don't have to but-" she cut me off. "Yes, Gavin I would love to go to homecoming with you." She stood up on her tiptoes and kissed me on the cheek. "Great!" I said. And I walked out feeling lighter than when I walked in. But homecoming was after the tournament, so I still had a while to wait.
