Chapter 3
The huge, white mansion was one of the largest in the city. It had beautiful gardens, lovely statues, and a magnificent fountain in the center of the path leading up to the front doors. But that's not what Katherine saw. She saw a prison. One that she was doomed to live in for another year.
As they neared the doors, Jack quickly pulled her into their goodbye/goodnight kiss. Though it was a short one, it was no less loving. Katherine had yet again snuck a few dollars into Jacks pocket without him noticing. Once Katherine pulled away and made her way up the steps, she was very happy. Not a normal kind of happiness, but one that is only found when you're with the person you love and they love you back. One that she only had when she was with Jack.
She was on the other side of the door now, for which she was glad. Her back was against the door. Her smile was wide and beautiful. She was in a moment of bliss, and then all too soon it was gone. "Katherine!" A voice boomed through the house. Suddenly, all her thoughts and joys were gone.
A maid came running to the front door. She was a slightly plump woman with light brown hair that was starting to turn gray. Her face was kind but it wore a frown. "Miss Katherine, your father wishes to see you in his office right away." She said, the fact that she was a bit scared was evident in her voice. Katherine rolled her eyes. 'What does he want now?' She wondered. "Thank you Martha. Wish me luck." She started walking but was stopped by Martha. The maid gently took the young girls hands into her own an gave them a reassuring squeeze. "Have I ever not Miss?" Martha responded. Katherine smiled at her, then proceeded down the hall.
She made her way to the door to his office. She knocked quietly, hoping he wouldn't hear, but she was wrong. "Enter!" She heard from the other side. She took a deep breath and opened the door. Her father, Joseph Pulitzer, was sitting in his swivel chair behind his large desk, waiting for her to come inside. She walked in and he gestured for her to take a seat in a chair before him. "You wanted to see me father?" She asked innocently.
He put his elbows on the desk and folded his hands together. 'Uh oh.' She thought. 'He's REALLY not happy with me.' "Now Katherine," he stared. "I can tolerate you being late for curfew, I can tolerate you working for one of my competitors, and I can tolerate you joining and aiding in the Newsboys Strike as well as many other things. But there is one thing that I absolutely will not tolerate, and that is seeing you and that insufferable street rat, Jack Kelly, in an embrace!" He shouted at her as he stood from his chair.
