Impossible Year
'There's no sunshine
This impossible year
Only black days, and sky grey
And clouds full of fear
And storms full of sorrow
That won't disappear
Just typhoons, and monsoons
This impossible year'
-Panic! At The Disco
Phil
I looked up from what I was doing on my phone as Chris and Pj walked into the room side by side. They were standing awkwardly at the doorway with crimson spread across their faces. "Um...are you guys okay?"
"What? Oh, um, yeah. We're...fine." Pj stuttered, not meeting my eyes. "Um so we managed to track Dan's phone and find out where he is. He's at some hotel in Michigan."
As Peej spoke, Chris stood silently, staring at him but looked away quickly when he saw me looking at him questioningly. "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yep. Everything's just peachy over here!" Chris said with an awkward laugh, "So, let's buy some tickets and go to Michigan!" He exclaimed a bit over dramatically.
"Uh...yeah, okay."

"Boarding flight number 622 to Detroit." A voice announced over the loud-speaker. I was sat in the window seat with Pj next to me and Chris next to him on the right. "We would kindly ask that all passengers fasten their seat belts and prepare for takeoff. Thank you for choosing British Air, and enjoy your flight."

We were about three hours into the flight and Chris had gotten up to use the toilets, so it was just me and Pj. "Hey, Phil?"
"Yeah?"
"What are you gonna do when we get there?" I looked at him confusedly as if the answer was obvious. "I mean, what if he doesn't want to come back?"
"I um...I never really thought of that." I replied honestly, "I just kind of figured that if we went there and talked a bit, that we could go back home and work this all out."
"I just don't want you to get your hopes up in case it doesn't work out the way you planned" he said placing his hand on my shoulder. "I'll be right back."

I knew Chris wasn't actually using the toilets as we planned on meeting up earlier to discuss what happened this morning. I can't say I wasn't terribly anxious for what's was about to happen because that would be a lie. Honestly, I don't know what I wanted to come out of this. I loved being friends with Chris, I knew he was always there for me and I was always there for him. We were perfect. But I don't know if I could live like that; everyday, seeing his face and knowing that I'm in love with my best friend and that he knew it too, but we'd done nothing about it.
I knocked on the door with our secret code (yes we have a secret code like 9 year olds), and waited for the door to open. "Okay, quickly now. I don't want people to think we're doing something...weird in here." Chris says, pushing me into the cramped space.
"Okay, can we just talk about this...what happened this morning?"
"I...what do you want me to say? That I want to start dating and be cheesy and romantic and all that?" He asked sarcastically.
"Yeah, a little." I said quietly, looking down at my shoes. "But if you just wanna stay as friends then I completely understand. I shouldn't have just burst it out like that."
"No, you didn't do anything wrong and honestly, I kind of want that as well."
"So does that mean..."
"Will you be my boyfriend?" Chris finished. I nodded happily and leaned in for a quick kiss, when there was a knock on the door.
"Shit." I cursed under my breath, "What are we gonna do, this is gonna look really weird."
"Well there's nothing else we can do, we're just gonna have to walk out there and see what happens." Chris explained, squeezing passed me to open the door.
"Wait." I said, gabbing his forearm. "Are we gonna tell Phil?"
"I don't think this is the best time...maybe we should wake til we get back home." He offered. I nodded in agreement before opening the door and walking out with my head down and a blush creeping along my cheeks.
Chris and I tried to ignore the disapproving glances of the three people in line, by walking back to our seats hurriedly, both of our faces blood red.
"Where the hell were you two?" Phil asked as we sat back down in our seats. "Were you having sex in the toilets or something?" He asked with a chuckle.
"What? No! Why would you think that?" Chris defended, "That's crazy."
"Very subtle." I whispered into his ear. Phil seemed just confused though, turning back to look out the window again.

"Housekeeping!" A female voice called from the other side of the hotel room door.
I groaned and rolled out of the bed that I'd been in all day. Honestly I didn't feel like talking or seeing anyone since that last phone call with Pj, but I knew if I didn't answer that she'd come in anyway.
I lazily walked over to the door, opening it slowly. "Oh, I'm sorry would you like me to come back later?" She asked, taking in my horrific, disheveled appearance. She could probably see the way that my eyes were bloodshot with dilated pupils and bags underneath them from my lack of sleep.
"No, it's fine. I should probably get out anyway." I said, grabbing my leather jacket and throwing it over the black tee shirt I'd been wearing since the day I left.
She offered a small smile and I tried to give a realistic grin back as I walked out the door.

I walked around for a bit, careful not to get run over by any oncoming traffic, until I was out of breath. Yeah, I know, for the little distance I walked at such a slow pace, it was pathetic for me to be practically panting. Nevertheless, I decided to go into a Walgreens on the right, I assumed it'd be like any Superdrug back home.
A bell dinged signalling my entrance as I opened the door. There was an ATM near the front of the store, and I decided it'd be best to get some US currency as I had none at the time.
After taking out a withdrawal of $50, I skimmed the isles looking for a pack of crisps and a Redbull. I stopped as I saw a pack of Whoppers, which I knew from prior knowledge were basically Malteasers but ten times sweeter.
I decided to pass on the sweets and grabbed a bag of crisps and two 12 oz Redbulls...I mean, I hadn't really been sleeping much so I needed all the energy I could get. After paying, I walked outside going to get a taxi, but since I was in the suburbs-or maybe just Michigan as a whole-there weren't any. I figured there must be Uber there, so I pulled out my phone.
A magnificent, shining, jet black Impala pulled up along the curb where I was standing, and the driver-who's face I couldn't see-waved me inside. 'Damn, this is a pretty sick car for an Uber driver' I thought.
"Where to?" The driver asked as I got I to the car cautiously. It was a petite girl with long blue hair and heavy eyeliner.
"Best Western hotel?" I replied, and she smirked as I said it.
"Nice accent, where you from?" She pulled onto the road in the direction of the hotel.
"London." I said, slipping my phone in the pocket of my jacket.
"Nice, I studied there abroad last year, what brings you to the great US of A?" She asked sarcastically.
"I just...needed a break I guess."
"So you came to Michigan? Seriously? Why not like Florida or California? Somewhere more...exotic."
Not wanting to share my personal life with someone I had just met, I tried to come up with a believable lie. "I...have family here." I decided.
"Alright, well it was nice driving you...call me?" She said, handing me a slip of paper with her number on it.
The car came to a complete stop and I opened the door, stepping onto the curb. "Yeah." I said, taking the pepper from her hand and shutting the door.
Yeah...I'm not gonna call her.
