Chapter twenty-four
DAISY
"Wake up, Angel."
I stirred in my sleep, feeling someone's hand gently nudging my shoulder. Since I was a light sleeper, my eyes shot open and immediately went to find the source. Jason's already dressed figure appeared before me, looming over the bed and looking down on me. I sent him a confused look before blinking and clearing my morning vision.
"What time is it?" I asked groggily. The thought of much needed sleep invaded my thoughts.
"It's past seven. You have to get ready for classes." Jason informed me, standing up to his full height.
"Classes? But it's Sunday." I groaned.
"It is, but your timetable attached to that wall over there says that you have a class today at nine."
Realised dawned upon me and I mentally groaned. Every three weeks I had a Sunday class that took place for two hours. And it was the third week of the semester. I haven't been paying enough attention to my academics as I planned to in the beginning.
"Thank you." I said in appreciation. It was incredibly sweet how he checked my timetable for me. If it weren't for him I would have completely forgotten about that class and slept in, especially given last night's stressful events.
"No worries." He shrugged.
Jason was already dressed in his usual daytime attire causing me to wonder what time he had woken up. If this seemed completely surreal and unrealistic, I had initially thought that we would wake up besides eachother like couples usually did. Obviously, that was just a fantasy and the more sensible part of my brain knew that that would possibly never happen with Jason.
When I had actually taken note of my surroundings, I blinked up at Jason only to notice how handsome he looked. It was usual for him to look breathtaking.
My breath hitched when I noticed his eyes analyzing me, staring directly into my face. "Hi," I mumbled out stupidly, my morning look probably causing him to internally gag. After last night I couldn't see how he could still make me nervous, but there I was puckering like a fish and fidgeting with my fingers.
A small chuckle left his lips. "Hi." He said, letting a small smirk rest at the corner of his lips. Ugh, I loved his sexy-
"I still make you nervous don't I?" He questioned, raising a brow. He moved closer and lowered himself onto the bed in a sitting position. I sat up too, letting the blanket fall to my hips and the cool morning air brace my skin.
I breathed slowly letting all the events of last night come hitting me at full force. I had exposed my body to him. I took a shower with a guy that I knew for just a month. Three weeks and six days.
"You do." I confirmed, thanking god that my morning breath wasn't terrible.
"Why is that?"
"Because last night I acted so desperate and I'm sorry." I said, feeling my throat clog up. Last night had taken place in a haze for me, I hadn't fully comprehended my surroundings and the actual situation, but my mind was fresh now and I could see things clearly for the way they were.
"Daisy?" Jason asked softly, moving to come forward. His hand reached out and caressed my cheek gently. I closed my eyes at the feeling, doing my best not to move closer to him.
"Come here." He said, motioning to his lap. I didn't hesitate to move over and sat down comfortably in his lap. We stayed in silence as his hands played with the end of my hair. I rested my head onto his shoulder, feeling comfort engulf me.
"You were not acting desperate. If anyone was, it was me. I was getting hard just by looking at you."
Heat rose to my cheeks instantly. I hid my face into his shoulder, feeling embarrassed.
"Why? I'm not anything special." I mumbled.
"You're as hot as they come. Any sane man will be attracted to you. And I'm not just talking physical. You're sexy in a way that makes sane guys like me want to do crazy things for you." He said in a soft tone.
I flushed, feeling my warm cheeks worsen.
"It's called attraction by the way. Your hormones caused your attraction to me." He chuckled. "It doesn't make you desperate."
"Right." I murmured, snuggling like a little baby into his shoulder. The comfort was short lived when he pulled me away. I felt deep dejection when he placed me back onto the bed, his warmth now gone.
"I have to go." he muttered, his smile falling from his face. He looked sad, his eyes telling me a different story in contrast of what he had said. My hands twitched to touch his but I resisted, not wanting to come off as needy.
"Where to?" I asked, keeping my voice neutral.
"I have to sort out some business about what happened last night, and I'll probably be back in a day or two. I'm sorry this was short notice but don't hold up for me." he said, his voice void of any emotion.
My chest felt hollow after what he said. After everything that happened last night he was going to leave just like that? Disappointed settled in the pit of my stomach. I swallowed down the lump in my throat and forced a smile onto my face. I wasn't sure if he could read the truth behind my smile, but a part of me hoped that he could. Didn't he realize that I was still a little bit shaken up of the whole Lucien thing? Did he care that little? Or was I expecting way too much from a guy that I just started to know properly last night?
"Why would you leave after everything?" I asked quietly, a part of me hoping that he had heard loud and clearly and the other part hoping he just walked away. I couldn't help myself.
Unexpectedly, Jason knelt down to my sitting position and used his finger to raise my face and look up at him. I swallowed hard when my hazel eyes met his electrifying green ones.
"When I get back, I will make sure that you're completely mine. I won't be that jerk anymore who hides his feelings" He said softly, his eyes gentle.
"Really?" I blurted out, not being able to contain my excitement of wanting to be his.
A small smile lit up onto Jason's handsome face. "Really." He confirmed.
"Oh, well... I look forward." I said with a sheepish grin.
"I do too, Sweetheart. And that's why I plan to make my absence as quick as possible."
"I hope so." I said, letting the grin overtake my face completely.
"You just love me so much don't you?" He chuckled.
My heart stopped at that. I knew it was a joke but I couldn't help but feel foreign feelings running down my spine. It sounded to wrong, but the pleasantries felt so good.
At my worried face, his smile quickly fell. "That was a joke. I didn't mean to creep you out." He's assured, gently grabbing my hands.
Love? My feelings for Jason were strong, but I couldn't love him so soon. It was impossible.
"I know, I just..." I mumbled.
He glanced down at his wrist watch, and in that moment his eyes turned dark. A tiny but noticeable shiver ran down my spine when his eyes transformed so quickly from soft and caring to cold and devilish.
"I have to take care of some business. I'll see you soon." He bent down towards my face and placed a lingering kiss on my cheek. Nothing about it was supposed to feel euphoric or sensuous, but it did, and I wanted more.
He moved away but I quickly stopped him. I jumped up and impulsively wrapped my arms around his neck in a hug. "Thanks for saving me last night." I whispered.
He tensed for a while and remained immobile, causing a solid feeling of rejection you settle in my stomach. Embarrassed, I attempted to move away when his big arms suddenly wrapped around my waist. His arms tightened slightly, leaving us in a friendly like hug.
"Don't thank me." He said, but I could detect the low warning. "I seriously have to leave now. But I'll see you when I get back... and then, you'll be mine completely. I promise." he pecked my lips quickly before letting go. I missed his warmth, but I put a smile on my face instead of showing it.
"I'll see you." I waved, when he began backing away.
"Later, baby." He winked.
I blushed in response and gave a small wave. In long strides he was already opening the door and backing out. With one last glance he left and shut the door behind him. I sighed and flopped back down into a laying position. With the realization that I had classes in two hours time I let out a small huff. I needed more sleep.
I groaned in annoyance and layed in the same position for at least ten minutes with thoughts and questions swirling wildly in my head, when loud knocks came at the door.
I lifted my head in surprise and stared at the unpolished and chipping brown door. Who could be knocking at this time?
"Who is it?" I grumbled, clearing my throat.
"It's Penny"
I jumped up from my laying potion, surprised that they would come at this hour of the morning. It shouldn't have been that much of a shock as I went to a party with them last night and haven't seen them since, even before the shooting. I was with Jason for most of the night.
"Come inside." I rushed out.
The door opened to reveal Penny and the all too familiar faces behind her. Mavis, Grayson and Michael. I was relieved and more than excited to see them.
"Daisy, oh my gosh." Mavis gushed, speed walking towards my bed. In a flash, I felt her skinny arms fly around my neck in in a tight embrace. I let out a small giggle when she nearly fell on me, and let my arms hug her in return.
"I'm so happy you're okay. And I'm so absolutely sorry for last night, I am terrible for not taking care of you like I should have. I was drunk and careless and I let those bloody fuckers mess with you. I'm so truly sorry, that will never happen again." She blabbered out, her voice wavering near the end.
"Mavis it wasn't your fault." I assured, unwinding my arms from around her neck and pulling her too look at me. This seriously wasn't her fault, she shouldn't have felt bad for no reason, I would hate that. "Last night just wasn't the best time, we should get over it since none of us are hurt."
"But that's the thing Daise, what if one of us were hurt. It would have been all my fault." Mavis said, guilt in her tone.
"This isn't your fault. Stop it." I scowled at her, softly slapping her arm.
"Daisy..." Penny mumbled, her eyes glossy and showing evidence of tears.
Oh god, I didn't realize what effect my being in danger might have had on them.
"PenPen," I smiled, trying to lighten the mood. "I'm fine. See, absolutely and completely fine."
"You were taken, out of all people they took you and drenched you in petrol. Who does that? They left a box of matches next to the chair they strapped you in. Who the fuck does that? They were mocking whoever the hell they left you there to find." It was official that Penny wasn't in a good space, and the worst part was I would have to lie to her once again. I couldn't tell her the truth about Lucian.
"Penny..."
"No, I'm so damn sick of this lunatic town we live in. I hate that we have to constantly live in fear of all those gangsters and what ever the fuck not. Can't the police do their job correctly? Are the people that supposed to protect us also lunatics who are afraid of gangs? Argh! We almost lost you, Daisy. I can't accept that."
I bit my lip, scared that what she was saying was very true in fact. It really warmed my heart that Penny was so worried of me, but I couldn't even begin to explain the amount of anger I was feeling after she had just said that. Lucian had little to no right to use me to get to his enemy. We shared a past but that didn't change the fact that I was an innocent person attending that party. Two people died at that party. Two people who went out to have a fun time, without anticipating that they wouldn't get the chance to go back home. To see their families ever again.
Instead of showing just how I felt I plastered a fake smile on my face, hoping they bought it.
"One day, justice will come to those criminals. I promise." I smiled, nodding my head in reassurance. Both Grayson and Micheal were gawking at us, awkward looks on their faces. "Nice to see you too guys." I chuckled at them.
"You don't know how much of a relief this is to us, Daisy." Grayson sighed out, leaning against the wall.
"Exactly, I would have hunted down anyone who have hurt you." Michael added, looking more certain than he sounded.
I couldn't help but smile at that.
"Come give me a hug, Penny." She didn't hesitate to wrap her arms around me in a bear hug. I sighed in comfort at the feeling of being cared by someone. And a few someones at that. They were my new home, and even if it took this traumatizing experience to figure that out I was glad that I did.
"So, how are you guys? And where's Jaxon?" I asked in confusion, searching the room just to make sure my eyes weren't playing any tricks on me.
"We're fine, and to answer your question about Jaxon we have no idea." Grayson answered.
"What do you mean? He left the party with you guys, right?" I asked, feeling my stomach drop at the thought of something bad happening to Jaxon.
"Yeah, but when he took off to his apartment last night we haven't heard from him since. I payed him a visit but he wasn't there, we all tried calling him too but he hasn't answered any of our calls." Grayson replied, his tone emotionless.
"Any idea why?"
I turned to Mavis seeing as she had a different connection to Jaxon, but found her staring down at her hands. Her brown locks framed her face, hiding most of it.
"Mavis," Michael began softly, coming forward. "Do you know where Jaxon might have went to?"
"I-" She cut herself off.
"What?" Penny asked, searching her face for any answers.
Mavis made no move to answer, her eyes trained on her hands.
"Talk, Mavis." Penny snapped, her voice sharp. I was more than shocked of see her act this way. "So much shit already happened last night. Spare us the worry and tell us where the hell he is."
I reached out to grab her hand, but she quickly pulled it away. She looked up at me with wide eyes, before they began glistening under the light.
"Mavis?" I asked worryingly.
"He-He took off last night and haven't returned since."
"What do you mean?" Grayson asked.
"When you dropped me off last night I drove myself all the way to Jaxon's apartment. I couldn't sleep and I needed someone that... Someone that I could trust and talk to. I couldn't blink an eye closed knowing that we were fighting and I was about to sleep without apologizing for always being a bitch to him. Things didn't turn out the way I wanted them to, and he stormed off last night and never returned since then."
I guess more than one bad thing happened last night. I felt really bad for Mavis, because I could see the way she looked at Jaxon as if he were her whole life. She might have acted that way towards him but anyone close to her could have seen right through that facade. That girl loved him more than she cared to admit.
"What did he say when he left?" Penny asked quietly, probably feeling bad for snapping at her.
"Just that he won't deal with me anymore and that I could fuck whoever my slutty heart desires. And that he was always blinded by his feelings to see how terrible I am." She whispered.
"Mavis, that is not true." I said sternly.
"Well he's a fucking idiot," Grayson swore, rolling his eyes. "What a jackass? I should punch him." He suggested.
"Violence won't be necessary, Grayson." I said.
"Speaking of jackass, where's your roommate at?" Michael asked.
"Don't call him that. He's the one who saved me remember?" I narrowed my eyes at him, feeling offended on Jason's behalf.
"That doesn't change the fact that he's the sole reason that those gangsters were there in the first place. And it doesn't mean that he's any less of an asshole."
"Maybe to you." I mumbled.
"Are you seriously falling for his fake charms?" Grayson asked incredulously. "Do you have any idea who he actually is? Or are you choosing to ignore that? He's killed countless people and imported so many illegal weapons and drugs, how can you even stand being in the same room with someone who has so many blood on his hands?"
I frowned taking in what Grayson had said. I tried denying it but there was only so much time before I realized that he was absolutely true. This haven't even crossed my mind yet, which showed how much I was denying the truth. Grayson was right, I was choosing to ignore that and a big part of me hoped that all the decisions I was making would work out in the end.
I looked down at the wooden floors in contemplation. Confusion washed over me like a giant wave. I knew that a small part of Jason wasn't looking for a relationship, but I took the risk of having feelings for him anyway. What Grayson had said was just a big reality slap to the face. I couldn't be mad at him, but I couldn't help the anger that washed over me at the mean things he was saying about Jason. Things that were all painfully true, but I still didn't like that they were talking about him behind his back. I bet they wouldn't have had enough guts to say that to him to the face.
Feeling the environment change into a dampened and tense one I took a seat on my bed, not having enough guts to look Grayson in the eye. They were all probably judging me in the moment, wondering how any sane person could truly like Jason. Everything thought that he was the devil's spawn, a monster, but he was never a monster towards me.
I shut my eyes feeling my heart drop to my stomach. Why did people have to be so judgementful and quick to see the worst in other people? Why couldn't they find the story behind the bad before immediately thinking the worst of them?
"You don't see what I do." I said quietly.
"And what do you see exactly? The Prince charming in disguise as a cold hearted killer? I hope you know that people like him don't change their ways just for a girl."
"Fuck you," I looked up to glare at him. He looked shocked for a short second before covering it up with a neural expression.
"I'm just trying to give you a heads up." he shrugged.
"You can, once you're on your way out of the door." I remarked snarkily.
"Daisy, I'm not trying to-"
"Just leave." I shook my head in disbelief, not believing that Grayson could act so judgementful. He was the one who told me he wouldn't judge the fact that I had feelings for Jason. Why the sudden change of heart?
"I hope you know what you're doing." He said, before proceeding to walk away.
We were in silence when Grayson was out by the door. No one uttering a word.
"He doesn't mean it the way you think he does." Mavis stated, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Your feelings are your feelings. If you like Jason there is nothing that we can do about it."
I nodded and sent her a small smile, appreciating what she had said.
"And I completely support you okay." Penny added, moving to sit closer to me. She rested her head on my shoulder and intertwined her fingers with mine. Mavis did the same, by resting her head on my other shoulder.
"I know that I have only known you girls for like a few weeks but I really appreciate you and I don't know what I would do without you." I felt tears brim at my eyelids.
"Aww, honey. We love you." Penny gushed.
"Yeah." Mavis agreed, squeezing my hand reassuringly.
They were absolutely amazing to have as friends, and so were the rest of the guys. However, nothing could compare to having a best friend relationship with girls. They could somehow relate to you and most of the times understood how you were feeling. They would be there the moment you needed them and support what ever decision you made. That was what I was experiencing with these amazing girls. And the haunting feeling that reminded me that I was basically lying to them about my life made a deep and hollow sadness erupt all over me. It was as if it was constantly raining, but instead of water droplets it was sadness and guilt. It was a constant reminder that they have been honest with me the whole time and I didn't have enough decency to tell them the truth.
But it might hurt them, and put them in danger as well. I wouldn't ever be able to live with myself if anything bad ever happened to them.
And sooner or later, they would find out the truth and they would hate me for being dishonest with them.
I might even lose them as friends.
So I held onto their hands tightly, fearing that our amazing friendship could be ripped away from me and destroyed in seconds.
