Alice's POV
"Hatter," Mirana softly called while knocking on a door engraved with a hat, "I know you are in there Hatter...open the door!" I heard a mumbling on the other side. I jolted as I remember hearing that strange yet calming accent in my head. I shivered as I so desperately tried to remember. I wanted to remember, but how do you remember something that you never knew was there in the first place? All of this was giving me a head ache. Mirana rapped on the door again and the mumbling got louder. I heard bits and pieces. "You're late for tea!" and "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" and "No please don't go..." It broke my already broken heart to hear this man's...the Hatter's agony.
It didn't look like we were getting in any time soon, which made me mad. I demanded to see him! Even if I had to break down the damn door! But instead I took a hairpin that I had in my hair and knelt down in front of the lock. Mirana looked at me curiously with those coal black eyes. I placed the pin inside and jiggled it around, waiting for the click. I hear Mirana say behind me, "Alice dear...I'm not sure if that is going to wor-"
Click
"Never mind." She finished with a satisfied smile. I smiled back at her and pushed the door open, despite the queen's cry of protest. It was so dark you could barely see. Luckily, I had some matches with me. I struck one and found a small lantern right at my side. I lit it and what I saw in the room nearly made me cry. It was a wreck. Chaos screamed from the ripped wallpaper and glass scattered everywhere. Food or what looked like it was splattered on the probably once beautiful walls. Then there were hats. Hats of every shape and size and color everywhere. Bonnets, top hats, fedoras, sun hats, fezzes...all of them ripped or torn apart. But what got me the most was wrist standing in the center of it all was a man who wasn't very tall with bright orange hair, pale white skin, and dark flaming orange eyes.
"Hatter..." I said softly. Taking him in and seeing the scene around him put a lump in my throat. I did this to him? I caused this poor man to go to insanity. Though I do recall that he wasn't all that sane to begin with. I took a tentive step forward, not wanting him to get angry. He stared at me for a second, then his eyes turned a lime green.
"ALICE!" He exploded and I was sure he was going to tackle me...but instead I was caught in a vicious bear hug. He lifted me up off the ground, crushing my back. The Hatter cried out in joy and I couldn't understand a word of it. But I did catch some when he said, "You're back! Oh you are back! You came back for me! I knew you wouldn't forget me! Oh Alice YOU ARE BACK!" I took it all in. The touch of his skin against mine was absolutely breath taking and his smell was absolutely divine. Old leather and mint tea, my favorite. The way his voice was so cheerful and full of life certainly made me happy, but then I realized what I had to do and then made it drop.
So this made my heart heavy as I said, "I'm sorry sir...I'm so sorry...I don't know who you are." The hugging and twirling imediately stopped. He pulled away and grabed me by the shoulders. His eyes were starting to fade to a deep blue.
"You...you don't remember?" He whispered with a heavy lisp. His voice sounded so heartbroken.
I trembled as I whispered back, "I'm so sorry..."
"But you promised! You promised you wouldn't forget me!" The Hatter said with a hurt face and a broken voice. I could feel a tear streaming down my face.
"What promise?" I croaked out, unable to use my voice any longer. The lump was getting too hard. He dropped his hands away and collapsed into a nearby seat in defeat. He held his face in his heavily bandaged hands and stood completely still. I looked back at a dissapointed Mirana.
She said in a sad airy voice, "I'm sorry Alice. You should go. There is no need for you here anymore." Her words stabbed me. I flinched and sagged my shoulders a little. I gave a small nod, then looked back at the strange man who I cared for so dearly. I wanted to say something, maybe a goodbye, but that would only cause more hurt. Hadn't I done enough already?
I turned back around and started to walk out the door. But just as I passed over the threshold, I heard it. The voice that had been inside my head. But it wasn't inside my head now. It was out. And it was sitting right behind me...
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought-
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
The Hatter finished the strange rhyme and returned to being till. I turned to face him. Then something amazing happened.
It was as if someone had turned on a light. Like instantly I could remember everything. The Jabberwoki, the Red Queen, Tweedles, Mallyumpkin, Cheshire, the Vorpal Sword, Mirana, slaying the Jaberwoki, escaping the Red Queen's palace, having tea with the Hatter...the Hatter! Her Hatter...
I made him remove his hands from his face and said, "Why is a Raven like a writing desk Hatter?" He looked shocked and I giggled. I continued on and said, "Because I haven't the slightest idea!" I swear his eyes turned the brightest green I had ever seen and gave a cry of joy. I laughed as I embraced him with all my might. I was back! I was finally back with him. My Hatter. Mine and not yours. All mine!
I could hear Mirana break out of character and cheer and jump around. He stopped abruptly and said, "You're late for tea dear Alice...naughty." He gave me his biggest grin and I gave one back.
When I finally had to stop miling I said, "Oh Hatter...can you ever forgive me?"
He wipped a stray tear from my cheek and said, "I was never mad in the first place sweet Cricket. I thought I was in the begining, but then I realized that it was for the best that you left. Questions are important and if I kept you then well...that would be selfish of me would't it? Oh and you can call me Tarrant!" Tarrant...I loved that name. I sighed, thankful that he wasn't mad at her. Tarrant turned to Mirana and said, "This calls for a celebration no doubt?"
Mirana claped her hands together and said, "Oh this will be the best celebration of them all!"
Tarrant turned back to face me and I said to him, "You know I'm pretty good at futterwacking..." I recalled back on the day of my engagment party when I did the strange dance.
His gaped toothed smile returned once more and said, "As they say in the Abovelands....bring it on."
Yay she remembers! Okay so now the story is going to be about the relationship and how it grows between the two. Gosh I love writing these two they make me go nuts! Anyway comment please! And also check out my other stories if you're a fan of the Avengers!
