Chapter 41
Cami's POV
Liam walks over to us, “I'll lead you to the table.”
There's only one table, but he walks us to it anyways
“May I take your order?” he asks after we sit down.
“What are my choices?” I ask.
“Well, lasagna or um, lasagna.”
Marcel remembered that lasagna was my favorite food. He's adorable. I wonder what else he has planned for tonight.
“Hmm... I think I'll have lasagna.”
“Sounds good. The chef is excellent,” he says, pointing to himself, “It's me,” he whispers, laughing, “I'll be back with your dinners soon.”
I smile as Liam walks away.
“Marcel, this is amazing. I can't believe you did this,” I say.
He shrugs, “It's not much. I figured since we didn't want to go to prom, this could be our prom.”
I smile again. Neither of us cared much for prom. This is better than any prom.
Marcel runs his hands through his hair as Liam brings us our food.
“Dinner is served. Enjoy,” he bows and walks away.
I start to eat and Marcel starts to talk.
He clears his throat, “Cam, I want you to know that you're the best thing that's ever happened to me. I couldn't have asked for anyone better than you. You've saved me... Without you, I'm not sure where I'd be right now. Sometimes I would get so depressed that my heart physically hurt. I had everything planned out... The letters, the day, the way I would leave... And then you came. And everything changed. I knew what it felt like to be happy again. I could slowly feel myself returning to life,” he looks down at his dinner, “I was actually living for once. I was actually there. Not just a nerd in the background. Someone cared enough to get to know that geek,” he smiles, “And I just want to thank you for that. And I, um, I want to, uh, ask you something...”
“What is it?”
He reaches down and pulls out a small box. His hands are shaking.
“Cami,” he pauses and takes a deep breath, “I never want to be with anyone but you. I just want you to know that. And even if we're far away, I want you to know that I love you.”
“Marcel, is everything okay?”
“Well, you know how I applied for Harvard?”
I nod.
“I got accepted.”
“Marcel! You're going right?”
He slowly nods, “But that means I'm moving to Massachusetts. To America... I'm not going to be here... with you...”
I'm not sure whether I should be happy or sad. He got accepted to a great college.
A college that's away from me.
A four year college...
Four years away from me...
“And that's why I wanted to give you this,” he says.
He slowly opens the box.
My heart stops and my breath catches.
It's a silver ring with a diamond star.
Oh my God, it's a ring.
“Cami, in four years, no matter where life takes us... After college... When we get older... Through everything... I promise to be with you through it all. Even if I'm miles away, I will always love you. And after those four years, I hope to still be with you. Four years from now, on your birthday, wherever we are, I want to spend it with you. And that's my promise. And one day, I want to marry you. ”
Marry me?
Four years?
He takes a deep breath and looks at me with wide eyes, “I understand if you want to say no. I understand if you want this to just be a high school relationship...”
I smile and start to cry, “Marcel, in four more years, in four billion more years, I will still love you. I want to marry you too. And I want to be with you forever. No matter where life takes us.”
He smiles widely and takes the ring out of the box. He slowly puts it on my shaking hand.
The boys stop singing and start clapping.
“This is just so adorable!” Louis screams.
I smile and look down at the ring.
“Kiss already!” Niall shouts.
I wipe my cheeks, “I'm a mess,” I say laughing.
“You're still beautiful,” Marcel says, leaning closer to me.
The boys start singing “This” by Ed Sheeran.
“This is the start of something beautiful,” Marcel whispers.
“This is the start of something new,” I say.
Our faces are almost touching now. I can feel his breaths against my cheeks, tickling my skin.
He slowly kisses me. He smiles and I can feel it up against my lips. He leans his forehead up against mine, our noses lightly touching.
“I love you,” he whispers.
“I love you more.”
“I doubt it,” he says, before leaning back to kiss me.
*
We're standing on a balcony that's around the planetarium, looking up at the stars.
“This is beautiful,” I whisper.
I'm leaning my head against Marcel's shoulder and he has his arms wrapper around me.
“Isn't it?”
I play with my ring, twirling it around my finger.
“Are you cold?” he asks.
“I'm fine.”
“No, you're not,” he smiles, “You're shivering. Here, take my coat.”
He takes his jacket off and I slip my arms into it. It's almost down to my knees and the sleeves are past my hands.
He laughs, “It's a little big.”
“Maybe just a tiny bit.”
“I have something else to show you,” he says suddenly, holding my hand.
I look up at him, “What else could there possibly be?”
He runs back inside, still holding my hand and dragging me in.
“Sit right here,” he says, pointing to a chair, “I'll be right back.”
“Now you can hit the button, Zayn,” Niall whispers.
Zayn clicks a button on the wall and after a few seconds, the ceiling starts to open up. The sky is now the ceiling, with the stars shining brightly above us. They illuminate the room and sparkle like diamonds.
After a minute, a video is being projected on the wall. Music starts to play, but Marcel is nowhere to be seen.
Pictures start to play. All of our memories together. I smile as I watch.
The time we painted my room.
The day we went to the park.
His birthday.
The Fray concert.
The day he came home from rehab...
A lot of pictures of us hugging or smiling at eachother.
I love that smile. It can light up a whole room.
The boys start to sing Happy Birthday to me. It's the best rendition I've ever heard.
Then I hear them start to sing a song I've never heard before...
“Your hand fits in mine
Like it's made just for me
But bear this in mind
It was meant to be
And I'm joining up the dots with the freckles on your cheeks
And it all makes sense to me...”
Wait a second.
Marcel is singing too.
His voice sounds perfect.
He looks nervous and excited and happy all at once.
This is the most beautiful song I've ever heard.
“I know you've never loved
The crinkles by your eyes
When you smile
You've never loved
Your stomach or your thighs,
The dimples in your back at the bottom of your spine
But I'll love them endlessly
I won't let these little things slip out of my mouth
But if I do
It's you
Oh, it's you they add up to
I'm in love with you
And all these little things
You can't go to bed without a cup of tea
And maybe that's the reason that you talk in your sleep
And all those conversations are the secrets that I keep
Though it makes no sense to me
I know you've never loved
The sound of your voice on tape
You never want
To know how much you weigh
You still have to squeeze into your jeans
But you're perfect to me..”
I can feel tears stain my cheeks.
I should've worn water proof mascara.
“I won't let these little things slip out of my mouth
But if it's true
It's you,
It's you they add up to
I'm in love with you
And all these little things
You'll never love yourself half as much as I love you
And you'll never treat yourself right, darling, but I want you to.
If I let you know I'm here for you
Maybe you'll love yourself like I love you, oh.
And I've just let these little things slip out of my mouth
'Cause it's you,
Oh, it's you,
It's you they add up to
And I'm in love with you
And all these little things
I won't let these little things slip out of my mouth
But if it's true
It's you,
It's you they add up to
I'm in love with you
And all your little things.”
By the end of the song, I'm sobbing and smiling and sniffing uncontrollably.
I run over to Marcel and he lifts me up in his strong arms and spins me around. I kiss him again and he slowly puts me down. He intertwines his fingers in mine and looks over at me, smiling.
“Happy Birthday, Cami.”
*
“I don't want to go inside,” I whisper, holding both of Marcel's hands.
We're outside my house, it's almost midnight. Tonight's been amazing.
“I'll see you tomorrow though,” he says, smiling.
“That's too long.”
He gently kisses me, “Dream about me, okay?”
“Real life is better than any dreams.”
He laughs lightly, “I know.”
He wraps his arms around me and pulls me in close. I can smell his cologne.
“Don't leave,” I mumble into his shoulder.
“I'd rather stay with you, but my mom's going to kill me if I stay out much longer.”
I squeeze closer to him, “I love you. Thank you for tonight.”
“I love you too,” he kisses my forehead gently, “I'll call you tomorrow.”
I slowly let go of his hands and watch him drive away.
Today was the best day of my life.
“I love you, Marcel. I love you to the moon and back,” I whisper to the stars.
