Chapter 42
Cami's POV
I wake up to the sound of rain outside my window. I check the time, 9:00.
I feel like I'm floating on air from last night. Everything was perfect, not one flaw. I reach over to my bedside table and pick up the ring. I put it on my finger and smile.
When I walk downstairs, my mom is sitting on the couch reading the paper.
“How was last night?” she asks, looking up.
“Amazing.”
“Where was it?”
I tell her all about it. From the drive there to the drive home. I can't help but smile while reliving last night. I want to remember last night forever.
“So, what'd he get you?!” she asks when I'm done.
I hold up my hand and smile.
She catches her breath and almost chokes on her coffee.
I laugh, “Mom, it's not an engagement ring. It's just a promise ring.”
She raises her eyebrows, “Promise for what?”
“That in four years, wherever we are, we're going to meet up on my birthday.”
“Why? Neither of you are going far for college.”
“Actually, Marcel is.”
“Where's he going? It's not like we're in a huge country.”
“He's going to America,” I whisper.
“He is?”
“To Harvard...”
“Oh, sweetie...”
I swat my hand in the air, “It's fine. I'll be fine. Really,” I lie. I can't imagine him being so far, “Did any acceptance letters come for me yesterday?” I ask, changing the subject.
My mom sighs, “No, sorry...”
“Well, I'll go check now.”
I run to the mailbox, the rain drenching my pajamas. I quickly grab the mail and run back inside. Plopping down on the couch, I look for a letter addressed to me.
“Bill. Bill. Scam. Bill. This one's for me!” I shriek. It's from one of the universities I applied to!
I quickly open it and begin to read, “Cami O'Donnell, we are sorry to say you haven't been accepted...”
I stop reading and put the letter down. I sigh and my mom hugs me. I applied to five colleges, I've gotten two letters back, both saying no... I don't think I'll ever get accepted.
“Here's one,” my mom says, picking up a letter off the floor. I must have dropped it.
“I don't recognize the address it's from,” I say.
My mom shrugs and I slowly open it.
“Cami O'Donnell, we are happy to say that you have been accepted to Berklee College of Music.”
Oh my God. I got accepted!
“Congratulations!!” my mom says excitedly, hugging me tightly, “I need to call Grandma! She'll be so excited! I need to start planning a party, oh my. You're graduating on Friday. It's come so fast! My little baby's going up-”
“Wait,” I say, cutting her off, “Mom, I didn't apply to Berklee...”
My mom's shoulders slump, “What do you mean?”
“Berklee is in Massachusetts... I never applied there.”
“Someone must have applied for you...”
“You don't think Marcel did, do you?”
She shrugs, “You might want to ask... It seems like something he would do.”
Marcel's POV
The waves crash gently on the shore. I'm floating in the water, relaxing under the sun.
“Marcel! Marcel! Marcel!”
The waves become choppy and I'm bouncing up and down. I keep going under, I can barely stay afloat.
“Marcel! Wake up!”
I snap out of my dream and look up to see Cami. She's on top of me, bouncing up and down. Her beanie is flopping all over the place and she smiles when she sees I'm awake.
“Finally, it took you long enough,” she says.
“Good morning to you too. Can you get off me now?” I mumble.
She smiles and obediently sits at the edge of the bed.
“So, I got an acceptance letter today,” she says as I put on my glasses.
“Really? Did you get in?!” I ask, sitting up.
She nods.
“Well, where is it?!”
“Berklee.”
“Berklee as in the music school?”
She nods again.
“In Massachusetts?”
“Yep..”
He jumps out of bed excitedly, “Cami!! That's fantastic! Are you going to go? I didn't even know you applied there!”
“First, neither did I... And, uh, you're in your boxers,” she says, smiling.
I feel my cheeks heat up, “Oops.” I put on some sweatpants and sit down beside her, “What do you mean you didn't apply there. You had to apply to get accepted.”
“I didn't apply there, which means someone had to apply for me.”
I furrow my eyebrows in confusion, “So you're saying someone applied to a college without telling you?”
“Yes. Is that someone you?”
“No, it's not.”
She raises her eyebrows.
“I promise, I had absolutely nothing to do with it.”
She sighs, “Maybe they have the wrong person...”
“I highly doubt it. Cami, someone must have sent in a video or something. How else would they have found you?”
She leans her head up against my shoulder, “I don't know. Berklee is so expensive though, I'd never be able to afford it. Especially the flights there and back. Even if I did apply, I wouldn't have gone...”
I take a deep breath and hold her hands inside mine, “You'll get accepted somewhere, don't worry.”
“I haven't been accepted anywhere yet. You've been accepted to every college you applied to.”
I blush. That wasn't the right thing to say...
“Don't compare yourself to me. You are you and that's the best you can possibly be.”
My alarm goes off, playing “Look After You” by The Fray. I reach over to shut it off.
“Oh my God,” Cami whispers.
“What?”
She looks at me with wide eyes, “You don't think The Fray had something to do with this, do you?”
I stay silent and think for a second. That's a possibility. The Fray definitely would know people, right?
“Should I call them?” Cami asks nervously.
I nod slowly, “Might as well.”
I cross my fingers as Cami dials their number. She puts it on speaker so we can both hear.
Ring Ring.
Ring Ring.
C'mon. Pick up. Pick up.
Ring Ring.
“Hello?”
I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding in.
Cami could be going to Berklee. We could be going to college in the same state. We could be together! This is amazing. I really hope this isn't all a big misunderstanding.
“Joe?” Cami asks, looking at me nervously.
“Oh, hi Cami! So, why'd you call?”
“I got a letter from Berklee today...”
“Did you now?”
“Yeah, and, um, I was wondering if-”
I can hear whispering on their end.
“Okay,” Joe says, “You caught us. We know people at Berklee and we showed them a video of you singing. They love you! They're giving you a full scholarship. We talked to your mom beforehand, and she said it's fine and-”
“OH MY GOD,” Cami shrieks.
He stops talking for a second, “Everything okay?”
Cami looks at me, “I got a scholarship to Berklee,” she whispers, “I got a scholarship to Berklee!!!”
I put my fingers on my lips to quiet her and smile.
“Okay, continue,” she says, trying not to giggle excitedly.
“So, we talked to your mom and she's ecstatic.”
“My mom knows?”
“Yes, but it's up to you if you want to go. I'll think you'll love it there. They're looking forward to working with you.”
“Are you serious?” she asks, smiling widely.
“Serious.”
“Thank you so much!”
Berklee.
Harvard.
America.
So many changes.
But I'll get to do it with the girl I love.
I can't wait! The Massachusetts beaches, the snow, the accents! I'm so excited.
I can feel sudden butterflies in my stomach.
I'm graduating in a week.
Then off we go to college.
“Cami, I think you're going to Berklee,” I say smiling, after she hangs up the phone.
She hugs me tightly, “We're going together! I'm going to Berklee!”
I look down at her and kiss her, holding her face between my hands.
“C'mon,” I say, pulling on a sweater and grabbing Cami's hand.
“Where are we going?” she asks, as I pull her downstairs.
“We're celebrating!”
I run outside and scream to one of my neighbors, “Cami got a scholarship to Berklee!!”
He gives an awkward thumbs up as Cami blushes.
“Marcel...” she says, laughing.
“The world needs to know! C'mon!”
I pull my hood up and jump in the car. Once we're in, Cami leans over and kisses me.
“I can't believe we're going to America," she says.
“I know. We're going together!”
I hope you like this!! Thank you so much for 7.5M reads! I love you all!! <3
I wrote this quickly because I have to go to dance.
