Chapter 5: Cameron
Cameron grinned as he watched Luca and Nadia dance. They fit so well together. He knew Luca was crushing on her. How lucky is it that she was here tonight or that she can dance just as well as him? Who knew that clumsy thing is a pro on the dance floor.
"Hey, wait a minute." He felt someone grab his hand. He looked down at Nadia's friend. She was gorgeous too. Her light brown hair and deep brown eyes smiled up at him, "That was some excellent dancing out there."
"Yeah, you too. I'm pretty impressed by Nadia, I didn't know she could dance." He laughed.
"She's pretty amazing, how do you know her anyway?"
"Oh, I'm her boss," He chuckled, "I'm Cameron, by the way."
"I'm Minerva, her bestie." She grinned. "Nadia's mentioned you before. It's nice to put a face to your name."
"Ah, Minerva. She's mentioned you a few times too. You're the one who got her drunk before her first day." He laughed. He had no idea her best friend was such a beautiful specimen.
"Yep, that was me. So, I'm guessing that's Luca?" She asked, looking towards the dance floor.
"That's him." He nodded and she burst out laughing.
"And he's the one she tripped into on her first day. Oh this is too perfect," She sighed, wiping her tears, "Do you want to get a drink?"
"Yeah, sure. Maybe you can tell me if I need to baby proof the office for Nadia's clumsy self?" He chuckled, letting her lead him to the bar.
"No, you don't need to baby proof anything. I know she's clumsy, but she means well. She...she can't help it." She smiled, leaning against the bar to get the bartender's attention.
"I kind of figured that," He nodded, "So, how long have you two been friends?"
"A long time, we grew up together. What about you and Luca?"
"We're the same, we grew up together too. Do you work in marketing like, Nadia?" He asked. He couldn't help himself, he wants to know all about this cute little miss. Any woman that can battle on the floor like she can is worth getting to know.
"No, I work in finance. I'm an accountant. It's boring, I know." She shrugged as the bartender came up to the bar.
"That's not boring at all," He smiled and turned to the bartender and ordered two drinks for himself and Luca and turned to her. "What can I get you and Nadia?"
"Two raspberry gins and lemonade."
"That's a nice choice," He smiled, relaying the drink order and turning back to her, "So you work in finance and dance in a crew on the weekends. You're pretty interesting, Minerva."
She laughed, "If you say so, honestly I feel too old to be out here with these youngins sometimes."
"You're not wrong there. I love dancing but I feel like I'm aging out of the club scene."
"Right! But there's no place like this club for us old folks," She chuckled, looking around the club, "Honestly, I haven't seen Nadia dance like that with anyone in a long time."
"Yeah, Luca hasn't done this in a while. I had to drag him out tonight."
She raised her eyebrow up at him, "Oh really? Does that mean he's a gentleman?"
"I'd say so," He shrugged, "Why do you ask?"
"Just making sure my bestie isn't dancing with some kind of douchebag."
He let out a bark of laughter and shook his head, "No, Luca isn't like that. What about you though? Aren't you worried I'm some creep?"
A slow grin curled over her cherry red lips and his heart thumped in his chest, "No, you seem like a gentleman to me. Unless, you're going to tell me otherwise."
"Nope, my mama raised a good man."
"Oh Nadia and I hit the jackpot tonight then. There aren't too many good men left, you know." She laughed, "I'm sorry, I'm a bit buzzed and my mouth doesn't have a filter sometimes."
He grinned, "I don't mind it." He certainly hit the jackpot tonight too. She seems like a genuine person and he hasn't met too many women like that lately.
She raised her hand and waved to Nadia and Luca as they walked off the dance floor, "Your very nice boss got us some drinks."
"Thanks, Cameron and I see you've met my bestie." She grinned, taking the glass from Minerva's hand.
"Yes, I did. You two looked like you were enjoying yourselves out there." He grinned.
"Yeah, what was up with that?" Minerva laughed and held out her hand to Luca, "I'm Minerva by the way."
Luca chuckled, taking her offered hand, "I'm Luca, it's nice to meet you."
"Well, you know I couldn't deny the loser a last dance after that battle." Nadia laughed.
Luca gasped, "Loser? I'm pretty sure DJ D called that a tie."
Nadia and Minerva looked at each other and burst out laughing, "We fucking won that battle and you two losers know it." Minerva grinned.
Cameron looked at Luca and they grinned, "I feel like those are fighting words. Next time, how about you two ditch your crew and battle us?"
Nadia shrugged, "Yeah, alright, but we'll still win."
Cameron and Luca followed Nadia and Minerva to a table with the rest of their dance crew. They introduced the three other members of their crew as Raquel, the policewoman, Mairi, the therapist and Charlie, the teacher.
They were a lively bunch of women and wouldn't let him and Luca live down the fact that Minerva and Nadia essentially beat them.
"You ladies need to give it up, you know the rules." DJ D teased and turned his smiling face on Luca, "I can't believe you're here tonight."
"Yeah it's been a while and this guy finally convinced me to come out." Luca laughed, pointing at Cameron across the booth.
"Well, I'm glad he did. When I first met Nadia I knew you two would light a fire on the dance floor and I wasn't wrong." He grinned.
"I couldn't agree more, but my intention was just to get him out of the house." Cameron laughed. This was far more than he expected tonight. Luca was actually having a good time and he thanked whatever God he needed to that Nadia was here. It just made the night even better. He hasn't seen Luca smile or talk this much in a long time.
"You two seem alright to me," Raquel nodded and clapped her hands, "We usually go to another club after this for less watered down drinks. You're more than welcome to join us."
"Actually, I'm going to pass on that, ladies. I'm not really in the mood for that crowd tonight. I'm going to get a take out and go home." Nadia said, punctuating her statement with a yawn.
Raquel rolled her eyes, "Bitch, you getting old. What about you guys, are you coming?"
"No, I second what Nadia said. I think I'll just call it a night."
"So you're an old fart too, Luca. No wonder you two get along so well," Raquel shook her head and old at Cameron, "Well, what about you? Are you too tired to hang out with us too?"
He looked at Minerva and a grin spread across his lips at her hopeful smile, "Nope, I'll join you."
Minerva blushed, looking away from him, "Nadia, are you sure? I don't feel right not walking home with you."
She rolled her eyes, "I'm fine, you don't have to walk me home. You guys go have fun."
"I-I can walk you home, Nadia. I agree with Minerva, you shouldn't walk home by yourself."
Cameron raised his eyebrow at Luca. This is definitely out of character for him. He's not complaining though, Nadia might be just the woman to pull him out of his funk.
"Alright, that settles it. Luca you're walking Nadia home," Raquel smiled and grabbed the cuff of his collar from across the table, "If you do anything to her, I will fuck you up. I'm a cop, remember?"
"Raquel!" Nadia groaned, slapping a hand to her forehead.
Luca laughed, "I promise to be a perfect gentleman, Raquel. You don't need to worry."
"Good," She smiled, releasing him, "I'm just looking out for you, Nadia. I don't care if he's a fucking CEO."
"She's not wrong, you better text me when you get home too. I mean it, Nadia." Minerva huffed.
"I will," Nadia laughed and glared at Cameron, "I know you're my boss, but you better behave yourself with my friends."
"Of course, you two get home safe." He said as they slid out of the booth and said their goodbyes again.
Cameron smiled and watched Luca slide his hand to Nadia's back to guide her through the crowd and out the door. It's about damn time he's let loose like this.
