Chapter 73: Nadia

Nadia woke to a warm gentle breeze and the light smell of grapes wafted through her nose. She slid her eyes open and watched the sun pool into the room and the sheer white drapes sway in the open French doors that led out to a stone balcony. She slowly sat up to stare at the view of a lush green vineyard that spanned for miles in front of her.

"Holy shit..." she breathed as she slowly slid out of bed and padded out to the balcony. She leaned against the edge of the banister and took in the scenery around her. There were a few people working on the grounds of the estate pushing carts of boxes to a delivery truck. She frowned at the logo written on the side of it.

"Good morning."

A smile spread over her lips as she turned around at the sound of Luca's voice. "Good morning," she replied and her heart thumped at the dazzling smile on his face and the joy radiating in his eyes. He was standing in the door dressed in a light blue button up and a pair of tan shorts holding a tray of food. He looked so relaxed. She'd never seen him look so content.

"I was going to bring this to you in bed, but since you're up, do you want to eat out here?" He nodded toward the small table and chairs tucked to the side of the balcony.

"Sure. This place is beautiful, Luca," she said and followed him to the table.

"Thank you, but I haven't even given you a tour yet," he grinned as they sat at the table, "how did you sleep?"

"Really good, I can't even remember getting off the plane," she laughed as she looked at the spread of food in front of them and her eyes settled on a little black box wrapped with a red bow. She raised her eyebrow, "another gift?"

"Yep, I said I was going to spoil you," he said as he poured her a cup of coffee.

A blush burned over her cheeks and she bit her lip as she untied the bow and opened the box. She frowned. "It's a... key?"

"Mm-hm, yes it is."

She picked up the iron skeleton key with a 'Z' elegantly entwined at the base of the smooth metal. She looked up at his amused eyes. "What does it go to?" She said turning it over in her hand.

"That, ma petite fleur, is what you get to find out."

"Oo a little scavenger hunt. Do I get some clues?"

He tapped a finger to his chin and grinned, "you can ask me for hints if you want."

She nodded and took a sip of coffee, "alright, does it go to a door?"

"Yep."

"Is the door here?"

"Yes."

She traced her finger over the 'Z', "what's Zacchaeus?"

"Zacchaeus is my middle name and the name of my company," he chuckled, "It's a long story."

"And we've got plenty of time," she said and took a bite out of a piece of toast, "I'm intrigued now. You've never talked about Zacchaeus."

"I don't talk about it too much or make it known that I own it. This place has kind of become my sanctuary. I used to disappear here all the time before I became CEO of Shola."

A grin tugged at her lips, "so, you brought me to your secret hideaway, huh?"

He chuckled as he took a sip of his coffee, "yeah, I guess you could say that."

"Well, I'm honored. So how long have you owned this place?"

"Seventeen years. I bought it when I was eighteen. I was going through some stuff with my Dad about being forced to run the business. He'd been grooming me to take over all my life. It felt like he'd already planned everything for me. I love my father's company and I love business but I had my own interests too. Just like Lacey, he didn't want to indulge in my passions," he sighed.

"So you bought a farm to spite him?"

"Yes I did," he laughed. "I've been working for my father since I was fourteen so I saved up all the money I made and bought this derelict farm at an auction for fifty thousand dollars." He shook his head, "it was a terrible investment," he chuckled. "When you meet Mariposa, she'll tell you this was my rebel phase."

"I thought your rebel phase was when you first moved to Boston?"

"Yeah...that was a continuation of this. I hated being in Boston, but I also needed money to fund my business. So I was back and forth to Cali to work on my farm between working for my father and getting into stupid shit in Boston. I was a real mess back then," he laughed, "after I got arrested for my driving antics I lost a year of working on the farm. I had to let the small staff I had go because I couldn't afford to keep them and that's when I knew I had to get my shit together. I let so many people down," he sighed. "So, I focused on my job at Shola and made enough money to hire my staff back. I delegated the company to someone I trusted to run it in my absence and I finally opened my farm and vineyard ten years ago."

"Luca, that's not at all what I was expecting you to say. That's really amazing. So you built all this up from nothing?" She said as she looked across the vast vineyards and this was only part of it if there was a farm too. "This place must mean a lot to you."

He nodded. "Yes, it does."

"So, Mr. Underworld's secret passion is wine and produce. I never would've taken you for a wine connoisseur or a farmer."

He shrugged and a grin curled over his lips, "Neither did my Dad, but I'm a lot like my mom. I'm a country boy at heart, ma petite fleur."

She raised an eyebrow, "if you're so into agriculture why was your penthouse so bare. I haven't seen one black thing in this house. Well, what I've seen of it so far."

He burst out laughing, "there's some black here, it's just not the focal point. I've never considered Boston my home and I didn't want to make it feel that way. It was just a place I had to be, so I didn't put as much of myself into the décor there."

Her heart thumped and she realized what it meant for him to bring her here. It was more than just his hideaway. He was letting her into his world. She looked at the key and tears pricked the corner's of her eyes. He was giving her a piece of himself. She didn't need to know where this key led to. It meant he wanted her to have a place here too.

She got up from her chair and sat in his lap. She slid her hands to his cheeks and kissed him. "Thank you," she whispered and pressed her forehead against his, "you didn't have to let me in like this."

"I know, but I wanted to," he murmured against her lips, "you deserve to see all of me."

"If you keep spoiling me like this you'll never be able to get rid of me," she chuckled softly.

"That's good," he grinned. "I don't plan on letting you go, ma petite fleur."

She bit her lip as a blush burned over her cheeks. "You're going to make me fall in love with you." Her heart clenched at the nervous look that passed through his eyes.

"Would...would that be a bad thing?" he whispered.

She shook her head and kissed his cheek, "no, not if you always treat me the way you do."

A smile tugged at the corner of his lips, "I'm not perfect, Nadia, but I'll always try for you," he kissed her softly and pulled away from her. The worry in his eyes was gone and replaced with playful amusement, "do you want to get dressed and I'll take you on a tour?

Her heart was so full right now and a bright smile broke across her face, "yes, I want to figure out what that key goes to."

"Well, there are a lot of doors on my property. It might take you all week to figure it out."

She tapped a finger to her chin, "mm, so that means it's not an obvious door. Well, we can't leave if I don't find it within the week."

"I'm sure you'll find it," he chuckled and nipped her ear, "go get dressed, I want to show you around."

Nadia stood in a towel as she sifted through her suitcase and a permanent blush stained her cheeks. Luca thought of everything. He damn near packed her a whole new wardrobe. She grinned at the collection of lace bras and panties in various colors. She shouldn't be surprised by any of this. Luca had always been attentive to her, so why wouldn't he know what kind of under garments she preferred.

She chose a yellow set of underwear and pulled on a pair of cropped skinny jeans. She slid the matching bra on and slipped on a loose fitting light green button up. She rolled her sleeves up to her elbows and tucked the front of the shirt in her pants. She slipped on a pair of tan keds and went to the bedside table to slide her watch over her wrist. She smiled at the black key sat next to it and slipped it into her back pocket.

"You look nice," Luca smiled as he came back into the room after taking her tray down to the kitchen.

"Thank you. Someone packed some amazing clothes for me," she grinned as she tied her up into a ponytail on top of her head.

"You're welcome," he said as he took her hand and brought it to his lips, "you ready?"

"Yep," she nodded.

"Do you have your key?"

"Yep, I'm ready to start my scavenger hunt," she squeezed his hand.

He chuckled, "alright, but don't be upset if you don't find it today."

"I won't," she giggled, "but I might get frustrated if I don't find it by the end of the week."

"I won't let that happen," he tugged on her hand, "come on, ma petite fleur."

Nadia let him lead her out of the bedroom and into the hall. A smile graced her lips at the rustic red and orange art pieces that littered the warm sand colored walls. The multi colored woven rug that brightened up the dark wood floors.

"This is really beautiful, Luca," she breathed as she looked at the brass crystal chandelier hanging over the open sitting room below. The floor to ceiling bay windows that overlooked the pool and flowered garden. "Did you do all of this yourself?" She trailed her fingers over the iron banister that led to the stairs.

He looked over his shoulder and nodded, "most of it, yes, but I had a lot of help."

"Mm-hm and he almost lost it all being a pinche mierde," a woman laughed from a couch in the sitting room. She stood from her seat with a bright smile on her face as they descended the stairs.

Luca chuckled, "Nadia, this is Mariposa Perez, she's my former nanny and current CEO of Zacchaeus Inc."

The short grinning brunette kept her doe brown eyes on Nadia as she mumbled, "muy bonita." Mariposa took her hands and squeezed them tight, "It's so nice to meet you, Nadia. Dominicana o Colombian? Hablas español, señorita?" She spoke excitedly.

Nadia chuckled, "sí, pero yo soy Americana."

Mariposa's eyes flicked to Luca before looking back at her, "well, I won't hold that against you," she grinned, "I'm so glad you're here. It's not often I get to meet Luca's girlfriends."

Nadia's heart thumped and her eyes grew wide. It wasn't often that anyone referred to her as his girlfriend either. She choked out a laugh and looked up at Luca, "Oh really? I didn't realize we were using that term so freely."

"I told you we don't have to hide here," he grinned and kissed her head.

A blush burned over her cheeks. They'd never been able to be open about their relationship and she'd never minded it, but sometimes she wished she could walk down the street and hold his hand without anyone caring.

"Yeah, don't worry about that mess here," Mariposa tutted, "Luca's name isn't big enough to get a rise out of people around here," she chuckled, "Most people know him as the wine guy or Chaeus."

"Chaeus, huh?" Nadia grinned, "that's a new one. Maybe I should start calling you that too."

He ran a hand through his hair and twin flags of red stained his cheeks. "That's an old nickname.."

"From your rebel days?"

Mariposa burst into giggles, "Oh, so you've told her. He was a mess, but I stayed around and kept this place going when he nearly messed it all up for himself."

Nadia smiled at the love behind Mariposa's playful glare at Luca. "Well then he's lucky to have someone like you in his life."

"Mm-hm," she squeezed her hand again, "but it's about time he's found someone to share this place with."

Luca cleared his throat, "alright, Mari," he chuckled and pressed his hand to the small of Nadia's back, "I'm going to give Nadia a tour of the grounds now."

"Oh! Of course, I'm talking too much already," she laughed, "Enjoy your tour."

"Thank you, Mariposa," Nadia nodded, "it was lovely to meet you."

"I'll be around. We'll talk later and then I can tell you some stories about this man," she grinned and slapped a hand to his shoulder.

"I look forward to it," Nadia grinned as Luca led her out of the door off of the sitting room to the bustling grounds of the estate.

Some of the workers stopped to stare at her in awe while others waved and greeted them excitedly. Luca proudly introduced her as his girlfriend and she didn't miss the shocked expression that passed through their eyes at his admission.

"It's an honor to meet you, Miss Coleman," one of them greeted and took off his gloves to shake her hand.

"You too, but you can call me Nadia or Miss Nadia," she laughed and returned his hand shake.

He nodded and looked at Luca with a grin on his face. "Ella es muy hermosa, señor. Tienes suerte."

"Gracias por el cumplido, Raul," she smiled and a chuckle escaped her lips as his eyes grew wide and Luca burst out laughing.

"Y-you're welcome, Miss Nadia. I'm so sorry I shouldn't have assumed you couldn't speak Spanish."

"It's fine," she grinned and patted his shoulder, "at least you weren't saying anything mean."

"Oh no, never. Everyone is just excited to meet you."

"I'm getting that impression."

He raised his hands, "well I won't keep you, I hope you enjoy your time here. Glad to have you home, sir."

Luca chuckled, "thank you, Raul."

Nadia looked down at their entwined hands as they continued walking toward a barn, "am I...am I the first person you've brought here like this?"

Luca brought her hand to his lips and nodded, "yes, I told you I keep this place private," he chuckled, "I'm sorry everyone's so excited to meet you."

She shook her head, "no, it's fine. I think it's cute and...I like hearing you introduce me as your girlfriend."

A dazzling smile lit up his face as he slid his hands to her cheeks, "I like it too," he kissed her softly and butterflies punched against her stomach.

Maybe it was time they'd stopped hiding - to their friends. She didn't think it was safe to be public about this in Boston...what if Jonathan got released?

No- No...I'm not thinking about that and he's not getting out.

"You okay? You look worried."

"I'm fine," she grinned and leaned up on her tiptoes to kiss him again. "I have nothing to worry about. Come on, I want to test my key in that door," she laughed and pointed towards a door in the barn.

He chuckled, "I don't think that's the one, ma petite fleur, but you're welcome to try it."

She didn't care how long it took her to find wherever this key led. She was just happy he wanted her to be there with him.

And nothing is going to stop me from enjoying every minute of this week with him.
