Mechanical Masterwork

"C'mon, Deathtrap!" Gaige excitedly yelled. So what if she was a bit crazy? At least she had personality.

The robot let out gurgled noises, (Gaige hadn't programmed speech into it), and followed without a single objection.

To be honest, Gaige was just out here for the money. Deathtrap and her were here for the vault- and nothing else.

ESPECIALLY not Jack, like some rumors were spreading.

Her robot floated alongside her silently, like he always did. (Gaige almost always called him a he; because the robot had grown accustomed to having a gender.) He was such a great companion, even if he didn't know how to talk. Sometimes, Gaige liked to think she could fall in love with Synthetic beings. Secretly, that was why she had drawn the heart on Deathtrap.

"Ugh." The mechanic let out a sigh of Disgust, looking up at the large ledge above her. "Deathtrap, I need up there."

The animated piece of steel gently stuck its larger hand out, the one with only two fingers, offering itnfor her to step in. As she did, the hand drooped a little, but Deathtrap easily brought it back up. If the AI could think of someone he couldn't, or wasn't accustomed to, lift, it sure wasn't Gaige.

As he glided upwards, Gaige hummed elevator movement to herself. She was used to making comical jokes around Deathtrap, because she knew he couldn't make any remarks to anything she said. Not that he would disagree with her if he could, but it would be nice for him to talk.

She stepped off his hand with that last thought, shrugging to herself. She didn't pay attention to the thumping inside her chest, it was just anxiety from the high climb, and how quick it was. Females couldn't like robots- it was impossible.

"I need to build you an extra hand just forhigh-fives!" She yelled at him as she looked up at Deathtrap's one eye.

Her creation was so... Adorable. She wasn't used to liking anybody, let alone machines.

She took a moment to just... Stare at him. The greyish black steel plates his entire body was made out of, the glossy red heart she had painted with the golden key sticking out of it ever-so-slightly. Where his hips would have been, if she had wanted him to walk. The glowy substance that allowed him to fly, float, glide, and hover. The tally marks she had painted on his shoulder pad to make him look more intimidating. And last, but not least, the red paint that was beginning to scratch and wear off on certain parts of his body.

She had just absorbed the looks of every aspect of her robot. Her creation. Her project. And rage developed inside her, as she once again remembered that Deathtrap had somehow gotten third, not first, at her science fair. Those teachers knew Deathtrap should've won first place. They just hadn't cared.

'Well', she thought. 'I do.'

"I still can't believe you won third in that Science Fair." She said aloud, looking up at him again. "You deserve so much more."

He let out a couple more noises, nodded sadly up and down, a sign he usually gave of agreement. His eye flashed from white to blue, and he used that to the her he was sad. He had other colors too, depending on the mood he was in.

In other words, he was pretty social for a robot without words.

Then he held up his realistic hand, the one with four fingers this time. The brail came up, little tiny dots on his hand, and Gaige reached over, laying her hand over it gently and carefully. She knew he wouldn't hurt her if she made a mistake, but she wasn't sure that she couldn't hurt him.

'It's okay, little one.' She read aloud. 'We can take our anger out on these bandits ahead.'

"Yes, Death, we can." Gaige said, pulling her orange Goggles over her emerald green eyes. She examined the area below them, cocked her Jakobs Sniper Rifle, and counted the bandits.

One, two, three, four, five... She counted up to Twenty-one.

"Twenty-one." She reported to Deathtrap, whose eye now glew a vibrant red. Blood colored, but still bright. "We've got this."

She picked off an easy three of them before they realised where the bullets were coming from, and even then, she released Deathtrap into the pit they had been camping in. The two worked together flawlessly- Deathtrap assisted her by holding up a bandit once and awhile, and every now and then, she would even shoot one to keep it off of Deathtrap. Nobody else could have been a better team.

Of course, that had came with years of practice. They had worked together since Deathtrap had been created, and she was still finding fresh abilities that she hadn't even programmed him to do. He was actually learning. Learning like a human being.

And then it was all over, silent. Sometime during the fight, Gaige had jumped down into the pit and got all bloody, as had Deathtrap.

She walked over to her metalwork, and fell into his mis-matched arms. She had gotten shot during the battle, as usual, and had treated it with an insta-heal, wish always made her drowsy.

Deathtrap held her up in his arms, hugged her back, even. Gaige felt secure in her robot's arms. She felt needed, wanted, when it came to her robot. They were partners. They worked together. They were an army of two, and a flawless one at that.

Of course, you had to think. She was extremely little when she had made him. In 3rd grade. And now she was sixteen, out of school, in the wastes with her machine. Her partner. Here, hers, hers.

And that would NEVER change. No matter what.

She kissed his eyeball lightly. "I love you, Deathtrap."

The robot's voice was slow, mechanical, and genderless, "I... LOVE... YOU... TOO... GAIGE..."

And she grinned into his arm. What a wonderful secret he had been keeping. Fantastic, even at that.

But, boy, did they have catching up  to do.
