Chapter 8
Raoul scrambled to his feet immediately calling for Christine as he searched the room.
I searched as well, looking in closets, underneath the couch, and even behind the curtains, but there was no one there, no sign of Christine. She had simply vanished.
"Where did they go?" Raoul asked as his eyes darted around.
I only shook my head, not knowing what to say, my brain was even silent, for once, as no logical explanation could explain this.
"We have to get the police!" I said quickly.
"Oui, I'll get them, you stay here, just in case Christine returns." He told me, rushing towards the door.
I wanted to argue against this, not wanting to be left alone in this room, but I swallowed back my words, allowing him to leave me alone.
I looked around the room as I breathed heavily, my eyes landing on the mirror beside me and the words I had heard this Angel say echoed in my mind, look at your face in the mirror, I am there inside.
I turned slowly towards the mirror seeing nothing but my own reflection, nothing out of place for a moment, then slowly I saw what looked to be fingerprints on the side. Which wouldn't be out of the ordinary if it weren't for them being on the inside.
I pressed my hands against the mirror and as I pushed against it, the mirror didn't budge.
I stared at it, cocking my head to the side in confusion at the fingerprints being on the inside, but most of all fear. Christine had seemed to disappear out of thin air, and now there were fingerprints on the inside of the mirror.
Suddenly the door opened and I backed away from the mirror as I heard Raoul's voice. I glanced over at him, but quickly lowered my gaze to the floor, backing up further into the room as I saw the one man I never ever wanted to be in the same room with, my Uncle Henri.
"She was in here, talking to someone, a man she called her angel." Raoul said as he gestured around the room, worry filling his tone.
"An angel you say?" I heard my Uncle ask as he stepped further into the room, the amusement thick in his voice.
I took more steps back away from where his gaze would be, inching my way towards the exit, hoping he wouldn't see me, most of all that he wouldn't recognize me.
I saw him turn his head, his eyes looking at every corner of the room until they landed on me. I froze, not looking him in the eye, hoping, praying that he wouldn't recognize me.
"And did you hear anything?"
I looked up, seeing the recognition filling his eyes, a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth.
My heart accelerated in my chest as I stood there frozen and I fiddled with my fingers, trying to keep them from shaking.
"There... There was a voice." I managed to respond in a low voice, trying to keep my composure.
"Please, Monsieur, we don't have time to waste, Christine could be in danger or worst, we need to call the police." Raoul said, desperation filling his voice.
Henri looked at me for a moment, then turned his attention to Raoul, rubbing his face as if the disappearance of one of his dancers and sopranos was more of an inconvenience then an actual issue.
"I'm sure she is quite all right, there's no need to have the police making a scene and spreading unnecessary negative publicity." My uncle said with a wave of his hand.
Raoul frowned as he took a step forward.
"Unnecessary, Christine is missing, taken, if you cared about the safety of everyone who works in this opera house you would-"
"Monsieur De Chagny, as much as I appreciate your concern it is unnecessary, the safety of every single person in the Opera Populaire is of great importance." He said, though his eyes were narrowing in a way that showed that he really wasn't very appreciative.
Raoul opened his mouth to protest, but was interrupted again.
"And as part of that safety we must not cause panic in the opera house, unless of course it is unavoidable, but as you have failed to give me any actual evidence of Miss Daae's disappearance, besides a voice you may or may not have heard, then there's no need for the police to get involved, now is there?"
The Viscount looked at me as if I could be of any help, but I was frozen in fear, my fists clenched at my sides, hoping and praying that my uncle would just forget about me.
He sighed sharply and stormed past my Uncle, I wanted to run out with him and even made a move to when Henri grabbed my arm tightly, causing me to gasp.
"So, you've been hiding right underneath my nose this entire time, haven't you?" He asked as he closed the door shut, his grip tightening.
I swallowed, trying my best to seem brave, to have the facade of being unafraid.
"Yes, I-I have and you were too stupid not to have noticed."
I cried out in pain as he grabbed a fistful of my hair, yanking my head back.
"You take me for an idiot, don't you, Susanna or should I say Brianna? Did you really think you would be able to hide in my opera house?"
My heart accelerated in my chest in rhythm with my pounding scalp, tears of fear and anxiety filled my eyes as I tried desperately to push them back.
"Now, now, there's no need for all that, you know I only want what is best for you." He said his fingers loosening from my hair and tracing my face. "I will say you are an excellent dancer, which is why it would be quite a shame to terminate your time here, I didn't know you had such talent in the arts."
I swallowed as I recoiled from his touch, taking steps back until my back hit the table behind me.
"Y-you'll let me continue to dance?"
"For now, of course, you will no longer be getting paid and all your previous payments will now belong to me, just like you, Susanna." He said with a smile that made my skin crawl.
"I don't belong to you, you sick-"
He grabbed me roughly by my chin, squeezing my cheeks, preventing me from speaking.
"I'd be very careful with your words, Susanna, whether you like it or not you are mine, do you understand?"
I only glared at him as a response and his grip tightened, forcing me to let out a gasp.
"Do. You. Understand?"
I forced myself to nod my head, the best I could, even though everything inside me wanted to scream and run. But I knew that wouldn't go well.
Uncle Henri stared at me for a moment before releasing my chin.
"Clean yourself up, we wouldn't want people to start asking questions, now would we?"
I didn't respond, only rubbing my jaw where his grip had been.
"Compose yourself, I expect you to be ready for rehearsals tonight." He said as he headed for the door. "I'll be watching you closely."
"Then you'll watch me as I go as far away from you as possible." I said with a frown as tears streamed down my face, though try as I might to stop them.
Uncle Henri stopped at the door, not turning around for a moment and I grabbed the vase from behind me.
"You'll find that would be an impossible task, I have friends in high places my dear and their eyes are everywhere."
"I don't care how many friends you have I will go back to my parents, I-"
"And you will fail!" He yelled as he turned sharply. "Where would you go? I've told you this before, but perhaps you need a reminder, you are miles away from your parents, you have no money, no directions and no way of getting there!"
He took a step towards me and I lifted the vase I held.
"Not another step!" I shouted.
Henri looked at the vase then at me, a smile tugging at his lips, then laughed, a cruel, cold sound that made my hands shake.
"And just what are you going to do with that? Throw it at me? The vase may shatter, but I'll still be standing, it'll do very little good for you, besides it'll make quite an unnecessary mess."
I was breathing heavily, my hands shaking as tears went down my face, faster than I could blink them away.
"Pl-please, Uncle Henri, let-let me go back to my family, I promise I won't say a-anything, I'll just make something up, please-please I w-want to go home!"
"Oh, my dear Susanna, you must know by now that will never happen, you belong to me."
I gathered up as much strength as I could taking a deep breath as something seemed to break inside of me.
I threw the vase and it crashed against him, shattering, and I didn't hesitate I ran.
