CHAPTER ONE

I hear beeping. It sounds like it's coming from a machine close to my head. Am I in a hospital? I don't remember coming to a hospital. Actually, I don't remember anything at all. Well, memory wise. I can count, I know I speak English, I know I'm a girl and other basic things; but I don't remember my friends or family or anything of that sort.
Well I guess I can start by opening my eyes. I slowly try to open my eyes but it's proving harder then I thought it would be. It's almost like there's a covering over them, sealing them shut. I'll just listen then.
Under the beeping of the machine are voices. I'm not sure, but I think there are three or four.
"........wakes up?
"The doctors said they can't be sure, it depends on the patient."
"You don't think they'll..."
"No! Don't even think that!"
Silence. Besides the continues beeping.
Who are these people? Are they my friends? My family?
I try with all my might to open my eyes and after a couple minutes, I'm successful.
The reward for my struggle is not exactly great. All I can make out of my surroundings is a white and gold haze. The haze eventually becomes more clear and I realize I'm staring at a white, sun bathed wall and ceiling.
I have barely registered this before shouts of "She's awake! Guys, she's awake!" Fill the room.
I try to push my self up to a sitting position but my arms are too weak to support me. I settle for just turning my head to see who's in this room with me. It's hard to see much because everything is so bright it's making me squint. I manage to make out a boy next to me on my left. He has blond hair and piecing blue eyes. He's face is almost chiseled, but in a kind way. He's leaning over me with a worried yet happy expression.
"Wh...." is all I can get out of my parched and dry mouth. He smiles, but it looks like there are tears in the corners of his eyes.
"It's okay Zee," he tells me. " Don't say anything." I look at him in counfusion. Who is he? How does he know me? Who am I ?
I attempt to repeat these questions to him but all that comes out is, "...Wh...."
He must have guessed I'm confused. But the information he gives me isn't exactly what I wanted.
"You've been a-asleep, in a coma."
What? I've been in a coma? For how long? Again I try to ask, but nothing comes out.
He gives me a glass of water but my hands can't hold it, they're too weak and shaky. He smiles at me and holds it up to my mouth, letting me drink. I gulp it, but I'm lieing down and I start to cough.
"Monty!" calles a female voice. "Be careful! She needs to drink slowly." Monty puts the cup back on the bedside table and I look straight in front of me to see a girl of about 14 with dirty blond hair and green eyes. She's standing at the foot of my bed looking happy but nervouse.
"Up," I say to Monty.
"Up?" Monty repeats. The girl rolls her green eyes.
"She wants to sit up." She tells him. Understanding dawns on his face. He puts one arm in the crook of my legs and the other behind my back. Gently, Monty scoots me into a sitting position. My head feels like its about to explode, not from pain but from pressure. It feels like it's being blown up like a ballon. It quickly goes away though.
Now that I'm sitting proped up against my pillow I look around the room.
It's white washed with a picture of a lake and trees framed in gold on the wall in front of me, a widow to the left, and a wooden door on the right.
Standing at the back of the room are two boys. One with light brown hair and blue eyes, and the other with black hair and eyes so dark brown they appear black. They both look about 14. The boy with dark hair's face has a very small smile on it, but his eyes show happiness. The two boys are smiling at me when I meet their gazes.
Silence. Well....
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
"Where am I?"
"Sunny Hills hospital." The girl says. I think about this information.
"Okay," I reply. "But where." The teenage girl looks very confused.
"What do you mean where?" She asks.
I'm getting a little annoyed.
"I mean where is Sunny Hills? We're in America, right?" The girl looks absolutely dumbstruck.
"Do you remember? The accident?"
"What accident?" I'm really annoyed now. "Look. I don't know anything. I don't know about an accident. I don't know who you are, who I am, where I am.... I don't know, or remember, anything."
"Nothing?"
"Nothing."
A choked sob comes from her and immediately I feel bad. She stumbles backwards until her back hits the far wall. She slowly slids down it, still crying, with her head in her hands.
I turn to my left to look at Monty. The expression on his face is confusion and then understanding. Now he looks almost angry. He turns to me quickly.
"You're serious?" He asks. "If this is a joke it's not funny." His voice sounds angry but falters at the end.
I look him straight in the eyes.
"I'm serious." He looks unsure. I look back to the girl and see the boy with light brown hair has his arm around her. The other boy says, "I'll go tell the doctor she's awake." and then walks out the door.
I turn back to Monty. "Could you...could you explain what's going on? I mean, who everyone is?"
He doesn't answer. And then,
"You're serious. Oh my god, you're serious."
I'm so confused and my head is starting to hurt again. I close my eyes and scrub at them with my palms. I want answers.
"Please," I tell Monty. "I don't know anything." He just shakily falls into a red chair by my bed. He runs his hand through his blond hair. "Please?"
He smiles.
"I can not believe this is happening. This is a nightmere!"
"Gee, thanks."
He laughs shakily. "Well your sarcasticness stayed." He stays quietly, looking off in the distance.
I look at the girl again. She's fallen asleep on the boy's shoulder. He glances up at me, but his eyes seem to be blaming me for the girls breakdown. How was I saposed to know? I don't know any of them!
The door opens and the other boy comes back with a doctor. The doctor comes over to me with his clipboard and starts asking me questions, how I feel, if anything hurts, etc. Then he begins to feel my body and head. Finally he stops and looks at me with his full attention.
"Delton told me you don't remember anything. Is that true?" he asks.
"Yeah, it is." I reply.
He turns to address the boys, since the girl is still asleep.
"There's nothing I can do," he says apologeticly. "She may get her memory back, and she may not. There are some things I can do to help her, but not much. She may get flashbacks or get all of her memories back as soon as she sees something formiliar, maybe nothing. I'm sorry." He writes on his clipboard and then turns back to us.
"She'll have to stay a couple more nights, so we can make sure every thing is alright. I'll leave you guys alone now. Just come looking for me if you need anything."
"Thank you Dr. Fletcher." Monty says.
The doctor leaves.
I turn to Monty. "Please, can you explain...everything?"
He sighs. "I guess I have to." He points to the girl. "That girl is Ashlee. She's sleeping on Conner. The other guy is Delton, and, as you know, I'm Monty. And you're Zee."
I sigh. "Thank you. Now, where are we?"
"Sunny hills hospital, Washington, United States of America. Earth." He smiles at his joke. I just roll my eyes but I can feel a slight smile on my lips as well.
I take a minute to think about how crazy this all is. Four people I don't know claiming I'm their friend and cracking jokes about earth.
"How exactly do I know you?" I ask. His smile fades.
"Well, um...this might take awhile to explain."
"We have time." I reply.
"Right, ok. You have known me since third grade. You switched to our school because you were being bulied at your old one. We ignored each other until about fifth grade but then we were intoduced at a track meeting. When we realized we both liked running we started hanging out more. We lived close to each other so we walked home together.
"We continued doing this, even sleeping at each other's houses until sixth grade, when we started getting made fun of. I was worried because I thought you might switch schools again. We thought of us as brother and sister."
He looked down at his hands and squized them together. He looked half sheepish and half sad.
"I didn't tell you about me being worried so I seemed over protective to you. You thought I liked you, more than a friend. You switched to an all girl school. That's where you meet Ashlee."
"I didn't know you existed for a while." A tired voice said. Me and Monty looked over at Ashlee.
"Your awake!" Monty said, and then relized the ironicness of that sentence.
"Yah," she replied. She turned her head to face me. "You were so damn quiet! Hardly anyone even knew you existed." I smiled. That semed so...me. Even though I don't remember me.
She smiled and gazed off like she was remembering something nice. "That school was obsessed with clubs. I was in charge of showing new students around, helping them find a club to join." She looks straight at me now. "You didn't speak or anything! There were actually a few rumors going around that you were mute."
Now I'm curious.
