To My School

Speech draft

-Maybe?- "We'll here I am, what are your other two wishes?"
I'm not gonna lecture you about how the best way to live is to follow certain steps, because that's your advisors job. So I'm going to try to make this speech as interesting as possible.

Little bit about me, my name is - and I'm running for -. I'm absolutely horrible with public speaking, and I've never been in student council. I started with nothing, and I still have most of it. Basically, I don't know what I'm doing up here.

Though, isn't that the whole point of a preparatory school? To be prepared for the rest of our lives? Why not pretend to be good at something I've never tried? 🤷‍♀️

So I'm standing here with internal anxieties and external pressure to convince you that I'm the best option for this position, but I'm gonna let you in on a secret of mine.

I have no idea if I'm the best option. In fact, I'm probably not. I take medication every morning so that I can appear to be a normal human, and on most days it takes all my energy just to face the fact that I've got to go to school. I've been told my whole life that I'm smart, but I've got really bad grades, and I think I'm getting a little biased towards my future. I'm afraid to drive, and I've got no idea what I want to do after I graduate.

So I'm standing here saying words that you probably won't often hear from someone you don't know, but against all my better judgment, I'm going to continue.

I've experienced a school where it didn't really matter to anyone what you looked like. A school where you could show how you felt without social pressure, and the class would write a poem of empathy with their smiles.

And I'm saying this in the nicest way possible, but this is not a school like that. We've got amazing education and food, and some of the best teachers I've ever met, but we don't compliment each other in the hallways. We don't offer strangers genuine smiles even when we can see the tears in their eyes.

The light at the end of the tunnel was probably turned off due to budget cuts.

I've only met a few of you in passing, but I've noticed that this school shines. There's a quote by - that says, "We're a little all broken, because that's how the light gets in."
Now, I'm being super cliche right now, so bear with me for a second.
We're being told that we are only moons. We can only shine a reflection of another. But we can be a star. We can shine without anyone telling us when. We hold the batteries to our flashlight, we've just gotta put them in.

I love this school, we just need to learn to love being at school. It's gonna be so gosh darn difficult, but we can care for each other without being "soft", or "weak". Failure isn't an option, it's been embedded in the software.

We will be okay, no matter how long it takes.

Sorry, it probably ended up being a bit more of a lecture. Sometimes it gets a bit difficult to laugh about something you're passionate about. So I'll end with this truth potato.

Remember that you're unique, just like everyone else.
