Chapter One
Dracosa Prescott , Modern Day
She's weary but keeps the smile that she's known for. Dracosa is a dazzling beauty even as she matures. Her age transforms a sculpted and captivating aura to her exotic features. Dracosa waves as her dark green eyes glimmer at her adoring supporters, with thick, rich, dark chocolate lashes surrounding the almond eye shape. Her thick brows raise, in mock happiness, to see certain faces that ought to be familiar. Her slender caramel hands, perfectly manicured and red polished short nails grab flowers that are dashed into them.
Her lips part as she reveals a natural beautiful smile, with organic imperfections. A tooth that's a bit chipped and teeth that aren't perfectly straight but attractive. Her lips coated in a signature powder red color. Dracosa makes it into her dressing room and presses her back to the door, taking a deep huffing breath.
The blessing to be...alone.
Dracosa Prescott is a known live performer. Sometimes she sings jazz. Sometimes she lets her deep pain out in the blues, but she always sways and holds the attention of her audience. Men and women alike hold the similar desire to know her and to be her. They all imagine what it would be like to be so close to such an alluring and sensual woman; no one takes the time to consider that it may be hellish.
Dracosa snatches the wig off her head and gazes into the mirror teary eyes. Today is a day that she'd been dreading to happen. She wanted to hold it off for as long as possible but there was no way to get around it. Her girlfriend wanted Dracosa to stop performing, but Dracosa refused. While she has taken a time away, for vacation, Dracosa will not adhere to Ami's request.
A beautiful silver flask with crystals, is at her lips as she drinks in the tangy, bitter, citrus, and spicy liquor inside. The tears don't fall and she stares into the mirror, feeling neither here nor there but resolute. Ami is beloved by Dracosa, or at least as much as Dracosa understands love.
Dracosa came from a bad family. They were the kind of religious that had no evidence. The family drank, smoked, and abused; overall thriving in dysfunction while proclaiming religious hierarchy. Eventually child custody came into the picture but that didn't make things better for twelve year old Dracosa. Her beauty was always evident and it attracted darkness.
She ran away with nothing and no one from the smaller town. She found herself in the city and all she had was freedom. For a while, freedom was enough. However, hunger came soon after and then came prostitution and later came drugs not as a choice but as a need. Soon enough, Dracosa was in all hell and then Ami found her.
Ami was French and visiting America at the time. Ami brought Dracosa 'home' and fed her. She cared for Dracosa the way no one had ever taken the time or shown. Dracosa wasn't 'gay' but she loved the way Ami loved her and the relationship felt natural to embrace. The dynamic worked until it began to become unhappy for the pair and yet neither could leave. Their codependency held them together.
Dracosa was afraid to be in the world alone again. She was afraid to be cold, used, and hungry. She hasn't achieved anything without Ami and doesn't know if she can be successful on her own.
It's your money, your talent...
"Are you listening?" Ami huffs.
Dracosa's eyes swim to focus on Ami's tiny frame. "I...I'm listening."
She's unsure how she got from her dressing room to the loft she shares with Ami a few blocks away. Her words are slurred and a bit incoherent as she clears her throat and sits up on the couch clearing her throat.
"You aren't and I know why." Ami's pink and very full lips turn down with disappointment. Her pale skin tinged red with frustration as her eyes look at the table by the sofa Dracosa lounged upon.
"You're always making it about..." Dracosa's mind is mottled and she waves her hand at the various parafernalia on the table.
Ami scoffs, folding her petite arms. "Because it's always about this! You are using more..."
Dracosa now scoff, making an exaggerated strangled noise. "I go to work and I am here with you...I haven't had an affair since the last time and you nag and you nag...what makes you happy?!"
Ami almost pulls at her chestnut brown wavy hair. "Mon Dieu, que faut-il pour te toucher?! Can't you see it's you? It is you ma jolie rose, and nothing but you. I want to fulfill whatever is hurting..."
Dracosa feels the familiar feeling when her throat tightens and her eyes burn but can't muster tears. "Then allow us to be. I am as happy as I may be and you pushing me is not helping. You know that I suffer."
"And it hurts me so ma jolie rose!" Ami rushes and sits to the side of Dracosa, her knees in the plush carpet as she grabs Dracosa's hand scattering it with kisses. "I only want to make you happy and that's why I want you to consider..."
Dracosa slides her hand out of Ami's grasp of the conversation becoming what she had avoided and not wanting to face. "I took some time off. I know that I need to get my head straight and I will...I promise, but I need more time to consider such a huge move to France! Everything I know..."
"Everything you know is a memory." Ami's thick French accent makes it sound so much more scathing. "I am yours and you are mine ma jolie rose. Where is home if not in you and in me? We can make a home anywhere."
Dracosa tucks some of her kinky curly hair behind her ear. "It's so easy for you to say such a thing. You have a home in France. You know people there. France is more home to you with the addition of me, but I lose everything familiar with only the remainder of you. It's not the same Ami."
There is the brief moment where the carefully hidden rage articulates Ami's face. She can be painfully insecure and jealous. "You are worthy of more ma jolie rose. You are La Baker attempting to stay in a small, putrid, and smothering place. I want you to be surrounded by the beauty that you are."
Dracosa falters for a moment in her fighting against Ami's wishes. She feels the sincerity and vigor that Ami seems to fight for better for her. Ami has only brought better into her life since they met...
So why don't I trust you on this?
"Why is it that everything that is 'better' for me, is all that you want?" Dracosa's voice sounds small to herself.
"You think small. You act small. You are still stuck as the little girl who just wanted to be free." Ami's French accent once again brings a stabbing sharpness to her words which make Dracosa feel hit without a physical blow. Her eyes work not to look at the drugs on the table as Ami speaks. "I have only made you bigger. I have only cultivated your beauty. I have refined you and I will only continue to bring the best to you."
"Ami, I am tired." Dracosa's head begins to ache in a familiar way it does when they argue.
Ami's face goes blank before being concerned. "I will run you a bath."
A moment later, Ami aids Dracosa into the porcelain claw foot bath. The warm water is treated with goat milk, honey, and oats. There are essential oil candles lit and the steam still rises from the foamy water. Her skin instantly feels nourished as she sinks into the relaxing bath.
"Thanks so much." She murmurs as Ami sets a rolled towel under her neck to buffer the edge of the tub.
"No problem." Ami whispers as she begins to finger through Dracosa's hair.
There is a comfortable silence as Dracosa is lulled by the massage. For a moment, there is peace and there is nothing on Dracosa's mind about the day, the future, or the past. It's simple the way she breathes steadily and exists in the moment. As she falls into the deepest part of relaxing...there is a growing knot in her belly.
At first, it goes unnoticed. There is peace and nothing more but with each breath the knot grows and tightens creating a full feeling in her gut. And then, soon enough there is a sense of dread that she can't seem to put her finger on. Many thoughts of ' what if' and ' why that' are circling her mind.
"Ami, baby, I think I need a moment alone." Dracosa touches Ami's hand on her shoulder, keeping her tone light and being gentle as she's never sure what will make Ami fly off in a jealous rage lately.
Ami's mouth forms a line before she kisses Dracosa on the temple. "Enjoy my sweet."
Dracosa offers one of her dazzling false smiles as Ami leaves the room and then finally lets out her breath happy to be rid of the presence. She doesn't feel like being bothered today. She remains perplexed at how she got home from the dressing room but not too hard as she blacks out often enough or finds her memories fuzzy from substances. After a while, Dracosa bathes and leaves the tub.
She sits in front of a gilded ornate full body mirror and massages body oil into her supple firm flesh, seeing bits of aging here and there but not too bothered; only wondering what's next. She powders and spritz perfume before slipping into a silk two piece lounge short and cami; no panty no bra. Then scooping her long and massive kinky curly hair up into a bun that she gives little care to. A few tendrils fall around her face and at the nape of slender and elegant neck.
Dracosa falls back onto the velvet couch and the poor girl inside of her can't believe that she has such luxurious fabrics touch her skin so often. Ami came from money and has a well off family. She isn't filthy crazy rich but the antiques and generational luxuries make her more than comfortable. Once again reminding Dracosa how grateful she is for Ami as she sips a rich dry red wine.
Music softly plays in the background as Dracosa looks at her red toenails and wiggle them. She makes decent money and if she didn't have Ami, Dracosa would still enjoy quite a bit of the lifestyle she leads now, but there would be a nagging empty space. From the time Dracosa was a young twenty-one year old girl, Ami has been here.
Yet it feels like something is irrevocably changing...I don't know how to stop it.
Dracosa finds the room taking on a hazy and dreamy view as the substances she ingested are kicking in. The sedative properties quieting her mind and making her body sink into the couch. She is in a state before sleep when the door to the loft flies open bringing a chilling wind into the room.
The wind swirls around the large room that is somewhat a studio but not quite. Lifting the pillows off the bed in a twirl and then sweeping items from off the nightstand to litter the floor. The wind swirls and eventually blows the lit candles out and that's when she sees a shadow. There is a form and yet there isn't a form, Dracosa tries to move but her body cements.
There is no feeling, no fear, and only thought but not much in her sedated form as the shadow approached. Each distance crossed between the shadow and Dracosa brings a chill that forms ice crystals on glass and in Dracosa's hair. Her eyelashes sweep over her chin as she hears a faint almost imaginable rumble.
"Love me. Look at me. Love me."
The shadow covers her and although covered in frost, Dracosa burns. She feels as though she's on fire but there is no sweat as moisture in the room freezes and before long all is dark.
