chapter 3

Iris

There was one good thing about keeping the honeymoon vacation all to myself, The hotel room, it seems like Nathan had actually been considerate enough and paid for a penthouse suite for us to use during our stay. Where he got the money for it, I do not know, nor do I care at this point. But knowing him he probably posted a sob story on a crowd funding website and got people to donate for this, it is, after all how he got most of our wedding paid. His boss had let us borrow his backyard and had called in a friend who owned a restaurant who owed him a favor who in turn had a DJ friend who owed him a favor and so on and so forth. Thinking back on it, I'm glad I didn't get married. Nathan was a cheap human being and if I recall correctly I paid for most of our dates.

Throwing my yellow suitcase of the bed I made my way to the bathroom  roses and candle decorated tub adding to the honeymoon feel. But I wouldn't  use it just yet, according to the lady at the check-in desk there was a club not to far from here and a little I'm-not-getting-married dancing suddenly sounded like a good idea besides I had just the perfect outfit for that. With a huge grin and a new found giddiness I made my way back to the bedroom and pulled open the zipper.

I blinked once, twice, thrice, then rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn't hallucinating or anything. But it was there clear as day or night in this case. My yellow sunshine filled carrier was filled with old leather bound books that smelled of dust and the clothes that were peaking through the sides were dark. Gone were my fun sunflower print dress and in their place I had Wednesday Adams' closet.

Curious to the contents I opened the first book I could see the dark leather was surprisingly soft on my skin and the table on contents was definitely interesting to my mind.

Introduction to curses.

I. How to turn people into toads

III. Bugs and how to squash them

IV. How to give bad drivers a flat tire.

VII. Bad hair days and how to end them

X. Boils and warts

XIV. Bad luck and how to use it

It looks like a text book, and I couldn't help but flip to a section. Who needs the introduction? This book seemed interesting already.

VII. BAD HAIR DAYS AND HOW TO END THEM

Perfect I thought to myself as I noticed my dull straight hair in the mirror opposite me.

There are days that you will wake up and wonder what happened to your head. In most cases of hair envy another witch might have sent a bad hair day curse your way. To prevent such things from happening you should always tie your hair with a ribbon woven from unicorn hair or made with the hide of a dragon. If such items are hard to procure there are simple cautionary spells that can help protect your locks.

BED HAIR BEWARE

LEVE OF DIFFICULTY: Easy
PREPARATION: 20 minutes
DURATION : 3-5 Hours

Ingredients:
•Saliva from a black and white cow
• Apple vinegar
• 1/2 cup of sugar
• Bar of soap (preferably Ginger root)
• Mirror

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in cauldron along with 1 liter of water ( if you have a human roommate you may use a metal mixing bow)

Stir occasionally with Scorpion tail spoon (wooden spoon if you have a nosy human *see how to make your nose smaller on page XXVII if you feel generous).

Mix until boil, then let cool while mixing occasionally.

Pour into vial (or shampoo bottle) and  save for when needed.

It can be used everyday but it is recommended that you let your hair have a break at least once a week. Failure to do so can result in Medusa-like hair that will surely not be the envy of anyone.

I set the book aside and began rummaging through the rest of the things hopping the owner had something with their name on it,  unfortunately all I came across was some silk baggies with writing embroidered on one side.

HAIR ENVY

The last one was definitely interesting, so I opened it and lo-and behold the ingredient fell out of the little pouch and into my lap. With a wicked smile I took them all to the kitchen where I had seen a large pot during my excursion for food.

I was single what did I have to loose other than my hair?
