Turn

My first shift was scary. I had no idea what was happening. No one did. It hurt. Bones snapped. Joints dislocated. I felt like jelly, which is not good. I fell to the ground.

My parents rushed to me, concern and worry heavy on their voices. To me, they sounded underwater, their voices muffled beyond recognition.

I felt a hunger build in me. A hunger to run. To eat. To hide. It grew stronger as the pain worsened. Everything became fuzzy.

When I woke up, I was naked in the middle of the forest. Carcasses laid around me. Their insides torn out and scattered. I pushed myself away from the massacre as fast as I could. My back hit a tree and I just stared.

The grass was no longer green but matted down with the coagulated blood. A heavy scent of iron and rotting flesh filled the area. It was so strong and made the hunger return.

No bile rose in my throat despite my disgust with the scene. From what I could tell, none of the corpses were human. I was slightly shocked at the indifference I had felt upon that realization.

After hours of just staring, I heard branches break and a figure pushed themselves into the clearing. They looked around at the mess but had no look of horror. Instead, they removed their backpack and pulled clothes from it. They tossed them to me and gestured to the small stream the was flowing through the area.

The figure smelled like me. A hint of some sort of canine in their blood mixed with human, but there's smelled more sinister.

They made no sound, other than the noise made when they walk around. Instead, they helped me get dressed and look presentable. They then lead me back to the road and pointed towards town. Before I made my way back, they handed me a book that would help guide me through life.
