"Hi Aurelia!" he said cheerfully while I stared wordlessly back at him. He was barefoot and dressed in nothing but a thin white shirt and sweat pants. "What no greeting? I hope you aren't still mad about the biding spell?"
I scowled at him from the other side of the glass. He was barefoot in nothing but a thin white t-shirt and a pair of sweat pants.
"I take that answer as a yes. So what did you do to get locked up like this in the Alpha's dungeon?"
"We are being punished for stealing from the Alpha. Now go before you get me in trouble!" I spat and laid back down on the bed.
How did he even get in here looking like that? And for what felt like the millionth time, how did he know where to find me? Maybe if I just ignored him, he would leave me alone.
I let out a scream when I felt cold fingers brush the top of my head and bolted to my feet. Liam grinned up at me from his crisscross position on my floor... inside my cell.
He was just outside the glass just a second ago, had he opened my cell without me noticing!?
"How did you get in here!? Get out!" I yelled. "I'll help you find your sister Everlee or whatever. Now is not a good time."
"Oh, I'm not really here. I just traveled here in spirit." It was then I noticed the soft yellow glow surrounding his body. It was hard to see in the fluorescent lightbulbs blaring down on us, but it was unmistakable.
"How are you doing this!?" I demanded.
Grayson had that same glow around him when he had appeared in my room after I had witnessed his dad beat him mercilessly.
"Oh this, is a little trick our family can do."
Our family? He had said our family. No Aurelia keep it together, he might have said our by mistake.
"No," I said.
Liam narrowed his bright green eyes. "No?" Liam repeated back to me
"It's something that individuals whose matting bonds are too strong can do. And we aren't mates!"
Liam raised an eyebrow "Oh is that what Grayson told you? The man loves the study of magic, but has no clue what is fantasy and what is reality."
"So there is no way we are mates too, right?"
Liam let out a laugh. "No, that astral projection is not something that two souls that have an extremely close matting bond can normally do. It's just something that members of our bloodline and something our mate can tap into with our help. We can project ourselves to whoever we want."
Our, he had said it again...twice.
"So I am you sister!?" I asked. The words felt strange rolling off my tongue.
He nodded.
I felt my stomach churn.
Why me? This was a nightmare. I just wanted to live my life in peace, and men kept coming into my life and messing it up.
Liam grinned at me. "So you already had your suspicions, Everlee? I guess I was just a little too obvious in the dinner the other day."
Everlee? My name was Everlee!? Being called that now somehow felt so right, but somehow terrifying at the same time.
I swallowed hard, while I tried to keep my composure, as a million different emotions raced through my body. "What do you want? Did you come here to kill me? Do I look too much like someone, or is it too risky for me to continue to exist?"
"You do bare a striking resemblance to our mother. May she rest under the moon's enteral light. But I'm not here to kill you. That's the last thing I would want to do. I lost someone I loved recently. I can't get them back, but I can get you back."
"Our mother is dead?"
"Yes, she died shortly before you were brought here."
I felt a twinge of sadness at his words. I never believed I would ever meet my real mother, but I never imagined she was dead.
"So, what do you want from me?"
"I told you, I want you to help me find my sister. I want her back."
"Why do you need my help? If I am here!?"
"Even though you are Everlee you aren't her. You don't have your memories, and to be her you need them. So I need your help and cooperation to retrieve them."
I snorted. "Good luck with that. They can't be retrieved. When you were brought here as a Lunera, your memories are erased."
Liam shook his head. "They aren't gone, just sealed away. And we just need to break that seal."
"And how do you propose that we do that?"
"I'm still making the arrangements as we speak. But of course, you being Grayson's mate complicates things, and the spirits have yet to show me a clear path for us. I was honestly hoping that all your memories would come flooding back into you if I just said the name Everlee to you. But it looks like it didn't work."
Did he not know that Grayson was going to be gone for the next couple of weeks? I wasn't sure if I should reveal that to him, at least until I knew if I could trust him or not. And what were these "arrangements" that he was making?
"In the meantime, I came to you tonight to make sure you were alright. I heard about the other Lunera. I'm sorry that happened to them."
"Thank you." I moved towards Liam and sat down on the ground in front of him. "Can I ask you a question? Because I need to know the answer before I can decide if I can trust you or not."
"Yes, go ahead."
"Why did you put a binding spell on me?"
Liam grabbed both of my hands. "Because I couldn't have you reveal anything that might hint at your lineage before I had a chance to talk to you. And, because of your bond with Grayson, I couldn't get through to you until just now. That's why I tracked you down in person. I was not planning on seeing you that third time in the words, but I just happened to be nearby when your shouting match with each other was going on. No one knows you are alive, no one except me."
"So how did I end up here if no one knows I'm alive? Surely our father knows...is he was still alive."
Liam nodded, "Yes, unfortunately."
"So he knows I'm alive too?"
"No, like I said I'm the only one that knows you are alive. He thinks you're dead. And if he knew you were alive, he would personally come and kill you."
A chill went down my back, but I ignored it. I still had one more question to ask. "If that's the case how did I end up here at Pine Ridge?"
"Because I'm the one that brought you here."
I nodded, "I figured if you are the only one that knows I'm alive. But I want to know about that night I was brought here."
Liam looked down at our hands. "I relive that night and days leading up to it over and over again in my nightmares. But for you, I will relive it one more time."
