Grayson shoved past the other Alphas without a word. Alpha Christopher's wine glass was thrust into his chest. Red wine splashed up and left a red stain on the front of his white dress shirt. Alpha Christopher's eyes flashed yellow for a brief moment, before returning to normal.
Grayson stormed into the room towards me but stopped when he was only a few feet away. His golden eyes were fixed on me. He looked mad as hell. I stared helplessly back at his perfectly chiseled jawline, full lips, and clean-shaven face from the desk. If I had to say one thing about my death, it was certainly good-looking.
"Please don't say anything, I'm dead if you say anything."
I pleaded with my eyes.
Grayson must have picked up on my distress because something in his face softened and his eyes faded from the yellow into a soft brown.
"Grayson!" Alpha Luka snapped.
Grayson looked at the other Alphas standing at the door like he was surprised to see them standing there.
"Alpha Christopher... Alpha Damien..." A look of horror flashed across Grayson's face. He must not have realized who he had been shoving aside. "Pardon my rudeness, I lost control for a second. I'm a little tired so my wolf is on edge. I smelled unfamiliar people and my wolf just reacted."
He was lying. He must have figured out what I was, and he obviously didn't want the Alphas of the two biggest packs to know he was mated to a Lunera. He would probably tell Alpha Luka and that would be the end.
"A Lunera...?"
I looked over a Grayson. Had he just said something? I thought I just heard his voice. No, must have been my nerves making me think I was hearing things. If the bond between mates were strong enough, they could sometimes speak telegraphically to one another. We weren't mated though and that was rare.
Christopher nodded his head and said in a calm voice, "All good son, I'm sure you met no disrespect by shoving past me and causing me to spill wine on myself. Do you lose control of your wolf often when you are feeling tired, because being an Alpha is a tiring job? You might have trouble handling it in the future?"
There was a moment of tense silence in the room and no one spoke.
Grayson nodded his head. "Of course, sir, being tired is no excuse for losing control." '
Grayson hadn't lost control for a moment because he was tired. He had lost control because his mate had rejected him and knocked him out. Only he and I knew that though.
"That's right and it sucked," that was Grayson's voice, no doubt about it? my eyes flew towards him. He still faced away from me and towards the Alphas.
I had definitely heard that, but it appeared no one else had. Was I going crazy?
Grayson's voice came again. "No, you're not. I don't know how or why but we are speaking telepathically right now."
"Thank you, sir," Grayson said to Alpha Christopher.
"Since you are so tired Grayson, why don't you go to your room and rest?" Alpha Luka asked. "I wasn't expecting you at the party anyways since your long journey. Still, it was a disappointment you didn't join us after all."
I felt a wave of dread go over me at his words, but why? What he had said wasn't in any way threatening towards me, why did I feel so afraid?
"Gentleman," Alpha Luka spoke up, "Alpha Christopher, I will get my assistant Carol to get you a new shirt, and Alpha Damien, would you like to come back and see our garden? We just completed our hedge maze and it is quite spectacular."
"Actually, I better go meet my mate downstairs, I just got a text, there was some confusion with the drivers and they brought her early. I better go check on that. My apologies," Alpha Damien turned and was gone in an instant before Alpha Luka could reply, and Alpha Luka did not look too pleased about it.
"Well, I guess I will be seeing both you and Alpha Damien again at some point later tonight. And certainly, for brunch tomorrow," he snapped his fingers at Alpha Christopher and point. The other Alpha copied his gesture with the fakest smile on their faces that I had ever seen.
The two exited the room with Grayson trailing behind. He didn't look back as he left.
"Grayson, are you going to tell the Alpha that I'm your mate?"
No response.
After the door closed, Beatrice, Caesar, and Benedick, and I stood there listening to the sound of their retreating footsteps. I felt like I was going to be sick. I should be so happy right now, but I couldn't for obvious reasons. However, the others had no reason to be unhappy.
"We are going to be free of Pine Ridge bitches, 5 days a week, 7am-3pm!" Benedick shouted suddenly and threw his fist into the air. His dark eyes sparkled with excitement.
"Shhh!" Beatrice hissed. "We are literally standing in the Alphas house! We can celebrate once we get home. I got something for us..."
"Oh no Bee, I need to celebrate now!" Benedick began to dance across the Persian carpets that covered the floor like a crazy person. His long black hair flopped up and down with every movement his head made.
"Benney, you're going to get us in trouble!" Beatrice cried and began to chase him around the room in an attempt to grab him and stop his insane dancing. But every time she went to grab him, he danced right out of her reach.
"Five days a week, from 7 am to 3 pm!" Benedick chanted as he continued to dance around the room with Beatrice only steps behind him. "Aurelia isn't the only one that gets to escape this place anymore!
"Beatrice, you're just egging him on, stop chasing him," Caesar called and leaned up against the desk, but there was a smile on his face. "They are all just a bunch of idiots, aren't they?
I sighed, "Yeah, what a bunch of goofs," I said affectionately.
They were so happy...If only they knew what had just happened. I wasn't going to let them know. Whatever amount of days I had left with them, I was going to try my best to enjoy them.
"Benney, I'm serious stop!" Beatrice cried and continued to chance him around the room, but she had started to giggle.
By the time Beatrice finally managed to grab Benedick's slender waist, she was hysterically laughing so much so that she lost her balance and they both went tumbling onto the floor.
"Hey, Lunes!" I jumped when Caesar spoke up abruptly, "Someone is coming!"
I felt alarm tinkle the inside of my stomach.
Again, the room was filled with the sounds of frantic feet as Beatrice and Benedick launched themselves off the ground and back over towards the desk. They barely made it when the door opened again.
To my relief, the woman with red hair from earlier stuck her head inside the room, "Alright time to leave," she said dryly. "Around the back and down the back steps, all of you. Come on."
We followed behind her clicking heals until we were standing at the side of the log mansion while the snow fell gently towards the ground. She left us there and returned inside, while a familiar green truck emerged from the dark and came up alongside us.
"Who's that?" Caesar asked.
"Richard, he's the one that drives me to and from the dinner." I replied, "Don't worry, he's one of the good ones. I want to see if he would let us do something fun."
Caesar gave me an inquisitive look, "What has gotten into you, you never want to do anything fun."
I punched him in the arm, "Do too!"
The snow crunched under my tennis shoes, while I rounded the side of the truck and opened the door.
"Hey Richard, it went really well in there. I think more Lunera will be living a better life."
Richard gave me an approving nodded, "Good."
"Can I ask you a favor?"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Richard had a befuddled look on his face while he closed the trunk bed's door and threw the tarp to the side that had been allowing snow to settle in the truck's bed. "Are you sure you want to ride back here? "Richard asked "It's cold outside it's much warmer to ride in the cab. I don't mind.
"No, we are fine riding back here. I drew my parka around my body."
"All right then..."
We all climbed into the back of the truck. I noticed that Benedick didn't have his coat on. Instead, he had bunched it into a bundle and tucked it under his arm. It was freezing outside, and I wondered why Benedick wasn't wearing his jacket.
Benedick caught my questioning eye and held a finger up to his lips.
"I'll put it on when we start driving," he said, nodding towards Richard, who was just climbing into the driver's seat. There was the sound of the truck door slamming.
I turned towards Beatrice, "What kind of alcohol did you manage to steal? I felt it in your bag when I went to put my uniform away."
Beatrice gave me a devilish smile. "Vodka, you weren't here yet. But they had us waiting in the main entrance when we first got here, they had a whole table lined with alcohol. So, I grabbed this bad boy. Beatrice took out a clear and blue bottle from the red duffle bag in her lap.
"I asked Richard if we could ride in the truck bed, so we could drink!"
Beatrice beamed at me, "Aurelia, really what has gotten into you? You're being wild tonight and I love it!"
"And I stole this bad boy", Benedick said, "Unwrapping a bottle of wine from his coat."
The engine roared to life and we began to move forward through the swirling snow.
I snatched the vodka bottle from Beatrice, unscrewed the cap, and took two large swigs from the bottle. It burned and I cringed, but I was willing to take the pain to get the numbing effects to take over my mind.
I hand the bottle to Beatrice who took a swig of it and she passed it to Benedick who also took a swig from it. He passed it to Caesar, who decline to take a drink from it.
"So, what was up with the Alpha's kid tonight? He was acting so weird. When he came into the room, I thought he was here to kill us," Beatrice said suddenly.
I snatched the vodka bottle from Caesar and took another big swing out of the bottle.
"Whoah!" Benedick said with a laugh. "Beatrice is looking to get lit tonight."
The bottle was abruptly snatched from my grasp by Caesar. "Slow down, you are going to get sick!"
I stuck my tongue out at him and put my thumb down.
The truck abruptly stopped and I leaped out of the truck. By now the Vodka had begun clouded my mind and I began to sprint down the snow-covered dirt road lined with pine trees that lead to the house that all the Lunera at Pine Ridge lived in. Where I lived.
Behind me, I could hear Beatrice and Benedick drunkenly shouting out lines from Much Ado About Nothing, the same play that had chosen their names from. They were delivering the lines in no particular order.
"He have caught the Benedick, it will cost him a thousand-pound ere a be cured!" Beatrice yelled.
"Tell me for which of my bad parts didst thou first fall in love with me?" Benedick replied.
"I had rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me."
"Peace! I will stop your mouth."
I laughed loudly at their odd banter. What a bunch of lunes.
Something caught my eyes suddenly and I stopped in my tracks. I felt my heart sink at the sight that laid before me crumbled in the snow. Even I was not in my right state of mind, I recognized how serious the situation was in front of me.
"Benedick, Caesar, Beatrice! Come quickly I screamed!"
