"So what do you think of this place? Pretty great, right? One of the perks of being mates is we get to share each other memories. So welcome to the three weeks I spent in Italy."
"Why did you bring me here?" My eyes swept over the scene before me. The waves were gently rocking the numerous boats drifting in the water.
I had never been to the ocean before, at least not at any point that I could recall. The first eight years of my life were a mystery to me, but something was familiar about the salty air drifting off the water.
"I thought this place would be a really good spot for a first date."
I wiggled out of his grasp and stepped away from him. For the first time tonight, I wasn't enjoying feeling his touch. Grayson's jaw tightened but he did not say a word.
So he intended to play with me before he had me killed? Was that it?
"It's really pretty and all, but I would rather you just take me back."
"Why?"
" Because I was hoping that you would leave me alone, so you can find another mate and-."
"Let's make a packed," he interrupted me. "I will leave you alone, as long as you want me to. I won't try solidifying our bond, but only if you meet me at night in the space in-between our bonds. "
"And if I refuse, then what?"
The wind gently ruffled his golden hair and I suddenly wanted to reach out and touch it and run my fingers through it. I quickly looked away.
"Nature will take its course. We won't be able to stay away from each other forever. At least I won't be able to, especially under the next full moon. And I will claim you."
I swallowed my panic at the thought of him claiming me because if that happened, I might as well dig my own grave. Even if Grayson had no intention of killing me, the Alpha surely would if we were discovered, which seemed more than probable.
"I'll meet you, but only if you promise that it will help you stay away from me in the real world."
"You'll be doing yourself a favor too, it'll help you stay away from me...But I'm sick of talking about how much our world sucks, So why don't we enjoy a place that doesn't?"
Grayson replaced his arm around my shoulders and turned me away from the blue-green water towards the land that boarded them. I had to tilt my head to gaze up at the cliffs that towered above me. Numerous colorful, rectangular houses dotted them.
"Why are they so many different colors?" I asked, deciding I might as well enjoy this place if Grayson was insisting I stay here.
"The theory is that the fishermen of Marina Coricella painted them all different shades, so they would be able to recognize them from their boats."
"I like the blue one," I said and pointed towards a house, halfway up the cliff, that had been painted sky blue.
"I like the red one all the way at the top," he slid his hand off my shoulder and grabbed my hand. The tempo of my heart sped up a few beats, while he entwined his fingers with mine.
"Do you want to go see them up close?" he asked. "There's all these cool narrow streets you can walk through. They take you anywhere you want to go."
I shrugged, "Might as well."
His eyes drifted to my feet and he frowned. "Hold on before we go anywhere, we need to get you some shoes. The roads are all cobblestone, so it's not something you want to be walking barefoot on. Wait right here."
Grayson let go of my hand and hopped back into the sailboat that still sat, bobbing up and down in the water, where he left it. He bent down and when straightened again he held something in his hands. It was pair of white tennis shoes, like the ones I had been wearing earlier that night.
"Here," he tossed them to me and I managed to catch them. I slipped them onto my feet and were surprised by how well they fit. My own pair in the real world didn't fit this well, they were way too big. The pack members at Pine Ridge would often donate their old shoes and clothes to us Luneras, but it was still hard to find shoes that fit. Even the shoes they bought for uniform for school didn't fit.
Grayson secured my hand again in his and led me across the wooden planks and onto the stone slabs that bored the water and up onto a cobbled street. We walked for a little bit in silence hand in hand along the narrow cobblestone street. I didn't mind the silence. My eyes were too busy taking in the colorful shops and homes that surround us, while my ears were busy listening to the murmurs of the conversation I did not understand.
Oddly enough, even though I could hear people I didn't see anyone. The streets that we walked down were empty. So were the of the shops and cafes we passed. Even when I thought I heard someone just around the corner, we would turn it only to find yet another empty narrow road.
I glanced at the back of his salmon-colored shirt, "Did you change your clothes while you were on that boat?" I asked.
Grayson paused and looked back at me. "I didn't change, these are just the clothes I was wearing when the memory was created. If we went into something created with your memory, you would be wearing whatever you had on at the time. Why, do you want to be wearing something else?"
I looked down at my dark blue dress. "Would I be able to do that?"
"What change into something else ?"
I thought about it for a second. "Sure I replied," deciding there couldn't be any harm in it.
And I rarely got the opportunity to wear new clothing.
"Since it's my memory, I can recreate stuff I've seen before, like your white shoes if I have a really clear image of it, and I can even alter it a bit. I remembered staring at your shoes in my dad's office. I could try to make you something to wear, but I am actually terrible at making clothing from scratch, so I have a better idea. There's a store near here that sells clothes. They have a whole rack of them outside, and you could pick and wear any of them."
"So I could pick out anything if we went there and I could wear it?" I asked.
"Whatever is at that store when I was there last."
I had never been able to pick out whatever I wanted...
We continued to walk until we turned a corner and came upon a pink shop with colorful dresses hanging on a rack outside. The front of the store had a giant window with a mannequin draped in beautiful sunshine yellow, medium length, ruffled dress. Three stone steps lead to a blue door.
"Here we are. So pick out what you want and put it on."
I stared at the dress in the window. It looked like the dresses some of the female pack members wore when there was a special event like a wedding. I wasn't one for fancy things. I was most comfortable in an old sweatshirt and a pair of baggy jeans, but it didn't mean I didn't want to look pretty like those girls did every once in a while.
I climbed up the stone steps to the blue door. I wrapped my hand around the knob and gave it a hard tug, but the door remained closed.
I turned to Grayson who was watching me intently.
"You can't go inside buildings unless I've been inside them in real life. I've gone in this store, just walked past it."
"Oh," I gave the dress in the window one final look before I drifted towards racks of colorful clothing. I began picking through it. The rack was composed of mostly dresses in varying colors and patterns, but all were too short for my liking.
There were also a couple of t-shirts and shorts mixed in with the dresses, but none really stood out to me.
"Hey Aurelia, can you come over here?"
I jerked my head towards Grayson, I saw he now held a red brick in his hand and he had taken serval steps backward away from the store.
"Are you alright?" I asked while I eyed the brick in his hand. But despite my reservations, I still came to stand beside him.
"Yeah," he said and gently pushed me behind me. "I just didn't want you to get cut by any glass."
"Glass?"
I let out a small gasp when he brought his arm back and hurled the brick at the front of the store. The window instantly shattered into a million pieces.
"What are you doing!?" My eyes darted around looking to see if anyone had just seen him until I remembered where I was again.
"Wait here," he replied, the glass crunched under his feet, while he walked towards the now jagged, gaping hole. He reached inside, careful to avoid the jagged glass shards, and snatched the yellow dress off the mannequin.
He handed it to me, "You liked this dress, right?" he asked.
I nodded my head and took it from him. He must have noticed me staring at it earlier. How did he know I hadn't liked anything else on the rack?
I smiled at him before I could stop myself, but quickly bit my tongue to make it go away. "Thanks," I said quickly.
"Go ahead, put it on."
I looked around. "Is there somewhere I can change at? Like are there any buildings around here you're been into?"
"None around here. But you should be fine if you haven't noticed," he gestured to the empty street around us. "We are the only ones around."
"How come there aren't any people in your memory? Surely there were people here when this memory was created."
"I chose to remember this place without any people. But let's change the subject, it wouldn't be a good idea to keep talking about it."
"Is there a reason we can't?"
"Trovato!"
I looked up to see two buff looking, dark-haired men, dressed in black charging towards us. The shorter one of the two men was pointing in our direction.
I gazed at the men in confusion.
Hadn't Grayson just said he had chosen to remember this place without people?
Grayson let out a low growl, "That's the reason."
