Chapter 1
"Hyejin, you're going back to Korea with me," My mom said and I gave her an annoyed expression. I rolled my eyes and stomped off, heading into my room and slammed the door behind me.
I sat on my bed and sighed heavily. Many things have changed for the past few years.
After I have graduated high school in Seoul, then my parents forced me to stay with them in the U.S again. I even graduated university and now I'm on a break before I'll start searching for a job.
Just when I'm already used to staying here in the U.S, my parents got a divorce because of some stupid argument. I'm staying with my mom, and now she's telling me we're moving back to Seoul. It's tiring for me to keep moving.
But still, I started packing my stuff because I could never go against my mom, or in the end I'll be in trouble.
***
A week after, I landed in Seoul safely.
I dragged my heavy luggage, finding the taxi stand. "Eomma hurry!" I called for my mom whom was far behind me, struggling to carry all her bags with two hands.
We finally took a cab and headed to our new home. I looked out of the window at the familiar streets we drove by.
Minutes later we reached our new home. I looked around the neighbourhood which was quite familiar to me. "This isn't far from our old home, right?" I asked my mom.
My mom nodded as she unlocked the gate. We both entered the house and the place wasn't so bad. I didn't have much thoughts at it, probably because I was too used to moving into a new house almost every year.
I went up to my room and unpacked some stuff, before I decided to head out of the house to get some fresh air.
Nothing much have changed. I smiled as I shuffled along the streets. Suddenly, I received a text on my phone. I dug out my phone from my pocket, and read the text while walking.
'Hyejin ah, hurry come home, I cooked something for us to eat.' -Eomma
I tried to reply to her text whilst still walking, unaware of anything infront of me.
Suddenly, right after I sent my message, someone bumped into me, causing me to drop my phone. I gasped and quickly picked up my phone, only to see a huge crack on the screen. I frowned and shouted at the person, "YAH AHJUSS-"
I was cut off when I realised his face was very familiar. He blankly stared at me, and I stared back at him.
Wait... isn't he...?
His eyes whispered 'Haven't we met?'.
"Lee Hyejin?" He called me, and I had sudden flashbacks of us.
I gulped, "K-Kim Taehyung?"
We stared at each other for a few more moments, before he suddenly smacked my head, "Yahh... Pabo Hyejin, it's been long huh."
I shot a glare at him and rubbed my head, "Yah Kim Taehyung, you never changed!"
He chuckled, "Wahh, you've got more prettier now. Wanna have coffee with me?"
I rolled my eyes at him. "How casual of you to have coffee with me right after you bumped into me and now I have a huge crack on my phone screen!" I snapped.
"Aish, you're so noisy," he said and put his hand around my shoulder, dragging me away to the cafe nearby.
***
I sipped my coffee and stared at Taehyung through the hot steam. I put down the cup of coffee on the table and looked up at him. "So you're working already?" I asked.
"Yeah," he replied, "I'm working under my dad's company, you know, the business stuff."
"Ahh..." I replied and looked away. I was unsure of how to keep a conversation going between us - it's been long since we met.
Taehyung, however, kept staring at me. It felt like he was trying to tell me something, but he was unsure how to.
"Where have you been? So what's your job? Planning to get married?" He attacked me with questions.
I chuckled, "I went back to America after graduating high school remember? I just graduated from a university there and now I'm back here again in Seoul to get a job."
"I see..." he said, still pondering about something.
I folded my arms and looked at him. "Yah, are you gonna pay for my phone or not?" I asked.
"Yeah I will, don't worry," he said, "But before that I have a big favour to ask from you..."
"What is it?" I asked.
"...Okay this is beyond crazy. I'm going through a big problem right now and I really hope you can help me with it," he said.
I raised an eyebrow, "Okay... what is it?"
"...so my parents are urging me to get married, I couldn't find a suitable wife anytime soon, and now they're matchmaking me with this young lady whom is a rich heir. The problem is, she has a bad attitude and she's totally not my style."
"Go on," I said and drank my coffee.
"My parents wont let me off unless I marry someone, or else I'd have to marry her. So... I know it might seem crazy to you but... Hyejin can you...?"
I spat out my coffee and continuously coughed. "C-Can I w-what?"
"Can you, m-marry me? Just for this sake. I'll owe you alot. I'll pay for your phone, or maybe just get you a new phone. I'll buy you anything you need. I'll give you how much money you want. Just help me this once, for six months only, please?"
I stared at him blankly, not believe what he just said. "Michyeoseo?" I said, "You think you can rent a wife? Moreover I have my own dreams to pursue, I don't think I can help you."
"Uggh. You're my only friend that can help me with this. My parents will continue their business abroad after six months. After that when they already leave Seoul, we can split up and go our own ways. Hyejin please?" Taehyung begged, sounding desperate.
"How horrible is that rich heir that you're so desperate to avoid marrying her?" I asked.
"She's clingy, and she basically has bad attitude and stuff. I just hate her. So will you help me?" He asked again.
I gulped. I pitied him a little, and felt bad at the fact that I'm the only friend that could help. A little sacrifice for a friend won't hurt, will it?
I nervously clenched the sides of my seat as I tried to answer him. "Can you give me time to think about it first?" I asked him.
"Well, sure. But please consider agreeing to it. I seriously need your help," he said, "You just have to pretend."
I sighed, "Just, give me time to think about it. I'll get back to you when I'm ready. I need to get home now, annyeong."
I got up from my seat, walking out of the cafe. Suddenly, a hand grabbed my wrist. I turned behind and looked at Taehyung.
"Hyejin, you'll help me right?" He asked.
I wriggled my hand out of his grip, not looking at him. I shrugged and ran off, as fast as I can to avoid him.
I reached my gate after a few minutes, panting. Ignoring what just happened, I decided to just enter the house without thinking about anything. I'll just have to avoid him.
***
Just when I thought I could ignore about what happened that afternoon, I ended up having insomnia that night. I couldn't sleep, I kept thinking about Taehyung. He seemed serious for help.
The thought of being someone's wife made me have goosebumps. Time flies, now I'm already an adult.
It's just a pretend marriage, but what if I start to grow feelings for him once again? I'm still young, will I be able to handle marriage at a young age? Will I have to live with Taehyung?
So many thoughts went through my mind, when suddenly, my phone beeped and I got a text from Taehyung.
'Is your new home near the park? Can we meet at the usual place?' -Taehyung
I gulped.
Should I go see him? Or should I just keep silent and turn away?
